I'd think the scammers are desperate because it's so much easier to make gold now. They need business more than ever, so they've doubled (or tripled) their scamming efforts to make up for the lack of business.
I hope they all die. It's such a sleazy business.

It's easy to make gold nowadays, but there are also some exorbitantly expensive items out there. 10k for a battered hilt still isn't too uncommon, and 1.5-2k for Primordial Saronite is an accepted cost - for items that require 5 Saronite, you're pushing 10k unless you want to spend your hard earned badges. These items are also all about instant gratification (get a serviceable piece of gear until one drops in ICC, or just get an instant upgrade), so people are more likely to just buy some instant cash.
