WoW Rookie: Trouble afoot in leveling instances

No longer do new players find their noses wistfully plastered against the front windows of instances in Azeroth and Burning Crusade, sniffing at the tempting scents within like ragamuffins on the doorstep of a bakery on an icy morning. Thanks to the Dungeon Finder, it's once again possible to have your fill of instances along the road to level 80. The Dungeon Finder makes things easy -- except, unfortunately, in situations when it makes them even harder.
A post in the Blizzard suggestions forum points out several things that aren't working well or are outright broken inside various leveling instances. Some are minor quibbles, but one problem actually prevents cross-realm groups from completing a boss encounter. We'll fill you in on the issues, plus link you to this week's best WoW.com resources for fresh level 80s.
Blocked boss in Uldaman (UPDATE: The Uldaman issue has been hotfixed. Both the Gni'kiv Medallion and The Shaft of Tsol are now blue-quality items and therefore tradeable. Thanks to commenters for the update.) The problem The staff's individual parts cannot be traded between groupmates from different realms. If the pieces end up on players from different realms, you cannot assemble them in order to create the staff and open Ironaya's chamber. The workaround Make sure that all group members turn off autolooting in their game options and remind them not to loot the chest with shift+click. Kill Revelosh first, then go back to Baelog's Chest. Whoever receives The Shaft of Tsol from Revelosh should loot the Gni'kiv Medallion from Baelog's Chest and assemble the staff.
Class book confusion in Dire Maul Once again, trading restrictions between players from different realms make a mish-mash getting the right item to the right player -- this time, the class-specific tomes found in Dire Maul. It's not possible to tell which class the tomes are for before they're looted, but they're not able to be traded with players from other realms if they end up in the wrong hands. Until Blizzard flags the books to be tradeable between players from different realms, there's no workaround for this problem.
Quest levels don't match instance levels You'll sometimes find that the Dungeon Finder offers certain instances before you're high enough level to pick up the associated quests. Bummer, huh? All we can do is hope that Blizzard tweaks the criteria so that the Dungeon Finder doesn't offer you a group in an instance where you can't yet complete the quests.

Corpse run confusion Teleporting directly into your dungeon of choice is pretty nifty -- but it can spawn utter confusion if you have to return on foot. Listening to the group chat of a group that's wiped and whose members are running back to an instance entrance they've never actually seen is ... well, it's either humorous or sheer /facepalm, depending on your perspective. Until Blizzard allows players to respawn outside the entrance of tricky locations (Deadmines and Maraudon come to mind) or port directly to their group, bring large doses of patience for corpse runs in these instances.

Replacements left to their own devices Unlike the shot-gun design of the newer Wrath instances, old-school dungeons can be circuitous, confusing places. Players who join a group that's already in progress in an older instance face an unforgiving run through respawned patrol packs in an instance they may have never seen. Unless you have a warlock in your group to summon new players, you'll have to send someone back for the new player ... or simply give up.
Hot links for fresh 80s
Moving on to those of you who've already reached the end of the leveling road, let's wrap up with the week's best posts at WoW.com aimed at freshly minted level 80s.
| Beast Mastery 101 Beast Mastery is the ideal entry point into the hunter class. No spec is as widely useful and easy to learn and master as BM. |
|
| Arcane 101 The leftmost of the three mage specs, this tree focuses on magic that is neither fiery nor frosted. It is the current single-target pure DPS champ, as far as mage specs go. |
|
| Holy Paladins 101 Holy paladins focus on healing and supporting their party, with a special focus on tank healing. We'll show you how to be the healer your group or raid depends upon. |
|
| Protection warriors 101 The warrior protection spec is the oldest actively used tanking spec in World of Warcraft. Tanks deliberately attempt to hold monsters' attention so that they do not attack the healers or the damage-dealing players. |
|
| Gearing up your tank Let's talk about tank gearing for level 80 players who are using the Dungeon Finder but not rocking full T9 yet. |
|
| Beginners' guide to Arena, Part 6 It's Part 6 of our series on Arena combat for beginners. (Be sure to read the other parts to this fantastic series, as well!) |
|
| How to fight hunters There's a lot a hunter can do to really ruin your day in PvP. We'll help you fight back in this installment from our series exploring how to fight other players. |
|
| Tweak your performance with SimulationCraft This theorycrafting tool helps you tweak your gear, rotation and overall performance by simulating group or raid conditions. |

Dear gods, yes, they're unbelievably long. Even soloing some of the classic dungeons as an endgame-geared 80 can take a good long time. BRD, Stratholme and Scholomance were all taking me around an hour to clear when I was still doing them back around patch 3.1 or so.
There is something to be said for time-consuming dungeon crawls, but the classic instances really were too long. I've done two or three of them while leveling alts, but I tend to skip them and just quest. The loot is a bit ... odd ... for some classes, too, in light of the complete overhaul of gear design philosophy and stat allocation that happened in BC, and with heirlooms — especially if you're wearing five or six of them — the at-level instance drops just aren't relevant, anyway.

They should also switch purple and orange side Mara around- Orange is BRUTAL to the level its recommended for, while purple is much easier, and is actually lower level.
missemilyblack Feb 5th 2010 2:27AM
They have switched it -- at level 42 the only dungeon I can get in a random is Maraudon Purple, and Maraudon Orange's name is orange, meaning I won't get it for another level or so.

I also found problems with the booting one player per run option.
Last night, we ended up with a tank who whined about how we were all undergeared. I said, it's a heroic, how much gear do you need? He responded that he wanted to power through the instance. (HoS). And power he did, right until our first wipe around 2 minutes later.
Then he said 'lol' and went offline. Apparently before I had joined the group, someone had already been kicked so the group was left without any hope of replacing a tank for another 10 minutes.
I feel that if you limit the kick option, then at least allow us to kick those who are offline for say, 3 or 4 minutes.
So, itunes from Nagrand, I will remember you if we ever meet again...
Celeane Feb 4th 2010 6:03PM
I want a separate "Report AFK" option like there is in BGs. It's completely unfair to be stuck with someone mooching or DC'ed because you've already kicked someone or they're still in their first 15 min.

Other problems include:
1) The Satchel of Helpful Goods reward for doing a BC random dungeon contains blues with too low of an item level. For example, the 60-64 bag contains an item level 64 blue, while dungeons within that level range drop blues with at item level of 85+.
2) If somebody declines an invite during the ready check, it puts you back at the front of the queue, but doesn't keep your group together. This often results in your tank and healer being given to the next group in the queue, while you're stuck waiting.
3) Nobody wants to do optional bosses. Ragefire Chasm is probably one of the worst examples of this, because two bosses are located behind the "final" boss. This means that if people drop group after you kill that boss, you can't get any replacements to finish the instance.
kabshiel Feb 4th 2010 4:01PM
Another issue with the Satchel of Helpful Goods: many items can come with either the "of the Bandit" or "of the Wild" enchants. Those two enchants provide the exact same amount of agility and attack power, but "of the Wild" gives less stamina. Get rid of it.
Kylenne Feb 4th 2010 7:28PM
Screw the item level, the Satchel of Dubious Shit needs to actually give you gear your class can use. My priest alt has gotten maybe two things she could possibly use in all of the many randoms she did between 15 and 68, and that was a belt and gloves at like level 20. It was nothing but melee gear in those damn bags, the whole time. WTF do I need with agi and str as a priest?
That's probably the only thing I can't stand about LFD aside from some of the people you run into.
jbodar Feb 4th 2010 10:31PM
@Kylenne
Yeah, for my slog through Mana Tombs, my Rogue got no upgrade drops and the satchel gave me...
Caster Leather??? WTF Blizzard?!
I mean, you know what class I am, because the NPCs can say "Welcome, -class-", so how hard would it be to limit my reward to something actually useful? I could see if a Druid got Caster Leather, but he's a die-hard Kitty, but COME ON! This is Game Design 101. Even if I keep getting the same drops, I'll have gotten a possible upgrade before I need to vendor stuff.
Vogie Feb 4th 2010 3:50PM
I just hate being unable to give the healer the water I loot while leveling my warrior. I understand restricting greens, blues, maybe even some whites (Mid-level meats are usually rare on AH for aspiring chefs). But Water? Really? Your choices are a)have a mage or b) pause for a couple minutes for the healer to port out, then hearth back to town.
I can definitely see some instance revising once cataclysm hits. Current BRD would become "Heroic", and a simplified version would crop up. It's like the Vanilla Oculus.
Drakkenfyre Feb 4th 2010 4:09PM
It's not a gameplay decision, it's a technical limitation. It's the same reason why you couldn't trade anything in a BG unless it was conjured. The instances being loaded into their own server helps some of that, but it's still a technical limitation. Drops that you can roll on off a boss, and trade back and forth as long as you like are a little different than a green you might find on a regular enemy.
They probably worked long and hard on even getting drops able to be looted and traded between servers.
kabshiel Feb 4th 2010 5:24PM
Actually, it's a gameplay decision, not a technical limitation. They don't want people trading items between servers because that could have bad effects on server economies.

The link for Prot 101 is broken. It has an extra h in http.
lisapoisso Feb 4th 2010 4:11PM
Got it. Thanks, Kyle!
henro Feb 4th 2010 3:50PM
Goodie bags... These suck. I always get one of two items types (From 20-29 it was gloves or a cloak) in between a (I assume) level based trigger and it's almost ALWAYS the same drop for each item type. The most varity I've seen yet was 3 diffrent cloaks instead of just two. Yea it's awesome to get free blues but the loot table needs to be WAY bigger.
I also just learned the crap out of BRD running my GF around in it, but even still I've never finished it in a pug on my alt.
Snuzzle Feb 4th 2010 4:11PM
The loot table is quite large in terms of overall between all levels, and in terms of stats for each bracket. Each level bracket has a choice of two items to drop: ie, for level 15-24 it's a belt or a cape, for 25-34 it's a neck or gloves, etc etc. My level brackets might be off, but they've got it grouped quite nicely.
I mean, it would suck to see everyone always geared out in "tumultuous level 15-24 *slot* of the *stats*" in every slot. Them limiting it to two pieces per bracket prevents that.
henro Feb 4th 2010 5:44PM
Yea, actually I agree. But mix it up then. Some level appropriate potions (Plenty of use for an extra mana or healing pot, what's an extra of the bandit get you?), some food with some slightly increased effectiveness, a 1% chance vanity pet, just something more. It lost it's luster kind of quick and the repetition isn't going to encourage people to use the DF at lower levels :(
Bronwyn Feb 4th 2010 6:15PM
There's actually quite a wide variety of different stats- you're getting unlucky. I personally love it, even though sometimes it means my priest gets "___ of the Champion" instead of something useful- at least I know that when she finally does get the right stats, they're going to rock.
Possum Feb 4th 2010 8:31PM
I'm super into the idea of potions. As a healer I find myself chugging them in emergencies, bad pulls or when grouped with chain pulling pallies whose life mission is to have as many mobs on them as possible at all times. I'm actually buying potions off the AH, which ain't cheap so having some in those loot bags would be a real help.
Thundrcrackr Feb 4th 2010 4:02PM
I was actually quite surprised when the Dungeon Finder Tool first came out that Blizz didn't require your character to have first physically "discovered" an instance before being able to magically teleport to it. If they had, this would eliminate some of the corpse run horror stories.
Speaking of corpse runs, i CAN'T BELIEVE they haven't shortened the BRD/BRS/MC corpse run yet. That one is RIDICULOUSLY long.
