WoW Rookie: Trouble afoot in leveling instances

No longer do new players find their noses wistfully plastered against the front windows of instances in Azeroth and Burning Crusade, sniffing at the tempting scents within like ragamuffins on the doorstep of a bakery on an icy morning. Thanks to the Dungeon Finder, it's once again possible to have your fill of instances along the road to level 80. The Dungeon Finder makes things easy -- except, unfortunately, in situations when it makes them even harder.
A post in the Blizzard suggestions forum points out several things that aren't working well or are outright broken inside various leveling instances. Some are minor quibbles, but one problem actually prevents cross-realm groups from completing a boss encounter. We'll fill you in on the issues, plus link you to this week's best WoW.com resources for fresh level 80s.
Blocked boss in Uldaman (UPDATE: The Uldaman issue has been hotfixed. Both the Gni'kiv Medallion and The Shaft of Tsol are now blue-quality items and therefore tradeable. Thanks to commenters for the update.) The problem The staff's individual parts cannot be traded between groupmates from different realms. If the pieces end up on players from different realms, you cannot assemble them in order to create the staff and open Ironaya's chamber. The workaround Make sure that all group members turn off autolooting in their game options and remind them not to loot the chest with shift+click. Kill Revelosh first, then go back to Baelog's Chest. Whoever receives The Shaft of Tsol from Revelosh should loot the Gni'kiv Medallion from Baelog's Chest and assemble the staff.
Class book confusion in Dire Maul Once again, trading restrictions between players from different realms make a mish-mash getting the right item to the right player -- this time, the class-specific tomes found in Dire Maul. It's not possible to tell which class the tomes are for before they're looted, but they're not able to be traded with players from other realms if they end up in the wrong hands. Until Blizzard flags the books to be tradeable between players from different realms, there's no workaround for this problem.
Quest levels don't match instance levels You'll sometimes find that the Dungeon Finder offers certain instances before you're high enough level to pick up the associated quests. Bummer, huh? All we can do is hope that Blizzard tweaks the criteria so that the Dungeon Finder doesn't offer you a group in an instance where you can't yet complete the quests.

Corpse run confusion Teleporting directly into your dungeon of choice is pretty nifty -- but it can spawn utter confusion if you have to return on foot. Listening to the group chat of a group that's wiped and whose members are running back to an instance entrance they've never actually seen is ... well, it's either humorous or sheer /facepalm, depending on your perspective. Until Blizzard allows players to respawn outside the entrance of tricky locations (Deadmines and Maraudon come to mind) or port directly to their group, bring large doses of patience for corpse runs in these instances.

Replacements left to their own devices Unlike the shot-gun design of the newer Wrath instances, old-school dungeons can be circuitous, confusing places. Players who join a group that's already in progress in an older instance face an unforgiving run through respawned patrol packs in an instance they may have never seen. Unless you have a warlock in your group to summon new players, you'll have to send someone back for the new player ... or simply give up.
Hot links for fresh 80s
Moving on to those of you who've already reached the end of the leveling road, let's wrap up with the week's best posts at WoW.com aimed at freshly minted level 80s.

|
| Protection warriors 101 The warrior protection spec is the oldest actively used tanking spec in World of Warcraft. Tanks deliberately attempt to hold monsters' attention so that they do not attack the healers or the damage-dealing players. |
|
| Gearing up your tank Let's talk about tank gearing for level 80 players who are using the Dungeon Finder but not rocking full T9 yet. |

RFC long?!? I am an Altoholic and I don't think I have ever taken more than 15 minutes to run that on any of my 10+ toons under level 23....(only 2 are tanks and no heals.) I usually wait longer in the queue than it takes to finish it.
Now WC, and even to some extent DM, are long. I cringe every time WC pops...it is worse than Oculus IMO.

I feel like it would be helpful to recommend the Atlas add-on for the WoW Rookies. It's very helpful in that it has instance maps for all the classic and BC dungeons that Blizzard haven't added to the game. Places like BRD are still a bit confusing on the map since it doesn't really make clear if you are heading up or down, still it's better than nothing.
David Feb 4th 2010 4:26PM
The rezing can be a problem, I spent an hour trying to get a new player back to the entrance to BRD. She (female avatar, no clue about true gender) had never been there before, and had no clue how to navigate to the dungeon entrance. I thought about dropping group, but that would have been a d**k move on my part.
I never had been to BRD until the new LFG tool, or any of the instances to be honest, but I can usually figure out how to get to them pretty quickly. If Bliz doesn't want to allow us to teleport into the instance while dead, then maybe they can create new graveyards closer to the older instances.

"female avatar, no clue about true gender"
You mean, they might not really be girls playing those female toons? Uh oh...

I wish I could say that none of this has happened to me, but I have to admit that every bit of it has happened. The Uldaman boss staff loot problem happened to me twice in the same day.
I do have to say that I love the dungeon finder other than the fact that it always drops me in the top two most difficult instances even if I have never ran the lower ones. I have ran the SM Cathedral so many times I am sick of it on my Warlock, but it has yet to drop me in the Armory or the Graveyard.
I don't mind running a green dungeon occasionally. It gives me a break from having to constantly watch for loose mobs and runners. I wouldn't want to run green dungeons every time, but a nice feature for the tool would be to see if you have the achievements and drop you in any dungeon that you don't have the achievements for. At least it would help with the problem of getting the same two dungeons six times in a row.

Instances in the old world were meant to be long and torturous, if not epic. They took hours to complete and sometimes you did it over a few days. Leveling in instances is great if you can get a decent group, otherwise it's just easier to quest until 51 and do AV until 58, then go to Outlands.
Having played since 2005 and done most, if not all, of the old world instances as they were initially designed, I have to say that the sheer amount of people I encountered through the DF who do not know an instances is amazing/terrifying.
Are there really this many people who never did the old world content? Are there really this many people who don't have the first clue how to play their class? Seriously, I'm starting to freak out here!
If I see one more ret pally with a sword and shield queued up as DPS and trying to OT in a 5-man I think I'll just go kick a gnome and scream.
Bronwyn Feb 4th 2010 5:48PM
That's nowhere near as annoying as the ret pally or arms warrior complete with 2handed sword queued up as a tank and trying to tank. They don't even bother to put on a sword and shield and PRETEND.
henro Feb 4th 2010 5:53PM
It was very difficult to get groups for older content before the DF tool came out. I'm a noob, I started just before BC and early on I spent many days in LFG and trade trying to put groups together to do older content and I never saw 80% of it until I could solo it. It's going to be the total reverse now. The next generation will have no idea what PITA quest grinding is but by god they'll know the dungeons!
Jen Feb 5th 2010 3:06AM
I started playing a bit after BC. I was terrified of group with random people (even more terrified they'd get desperate and ask me - fury warrior - to tank), so I didn't see any dungeons. I started enjoying them on my next characters, but there was no LFG back then and I wasn't in a leveling guild, so again I skipped most. Now I'm leveling a priest through the dungeon finder and I'm sure I've annoyed many people so - no, I *don't* know how to get to the entrance of WC, let alone find the group, I get hopelessly lost in Gnomeregan and I plan to skip BRD&co because there is no way in hell I'll find my way back after a wipe. (It took me 2 level 80s to learn how to get to Deadmines are a wipe...)
As for the level 60 dungeons... no thank you, I'd rather go to Outland and do some quests, then some hard, but non-maze-like instances. I DON'T like epic dungeons that take 3 years to complete. I wish Blizzard would introduce maps for the old content too, it would make things so much easier.
grannonelf Feb 4th 2010 5:44PM
Anyone else have problems with Stratholme? You go through the front and the gates will not open once you are inside. I've been running it for rep on my 80 and cleared the whole place only to have to go back to the service entrance to get out because the gates won't open. Either the lever has been moved or I just can't find it.
Any ideas?
shamman22 Feb 4th 2010 6:26PM
Yeah, I have an idea...It's how it's supposed to work. You go in and your trapped. it's epic.
Wellsee Feb 4th 2010 5:33PM
"Quest levels don't match instance levels." You mentioned being put in dungeons that had quests too high level for you to obtain, but the mismatch works the other way as well. The SM library quest was still green for me, but it wasn't an option under the LFD tool.
Regarding the corpse run, when I die in some of the dungeons in Outlands I appear at the healer spirit already ressed but without rez sickness. This has happened in the Netherstorm zone more than once, but I've done corpse runs in Hellfire Peninsula and Zangarmarsh. Not sure what the difference is. (Felt like a noob - as appropriate! - running around trying to find the entrance to the arcatraz for a few minutes before remembering the "teleport to dungeon" option was available. You know, since I was alive, not a ghost.)
And speaking of long, confusing dungeons: The Razorfen ones. I've been through both a few times with high level toons, and those were bad enough. Would hate to work through those at-level. Ugh.
Bronwyn Feb 4th 2010 5:47PM
The reason you respawn at the gy for the Netherstorm instances is becuase you need a flying mount to get to them, and they don't have it set up so you fly in ghost form there. It's the same reason you respawn at the GY if you die in Naxxramas.

@"Quest levels don't match instance levels"
This actually isn't a failing of the Dungeon Finder system. When all the low level instances' level ranges were re-tuned in patch 2.3, Blizz forgot to change the level requirements of most of the quests for those dungeons, too. So the real solution is to change the quest levels, not DF levels.
Crowqueen Feb 21st 2010 6:45PM
While we're at it, look at the Orgtinc quests in Azshara to get the hunter equipment. I had to try and find a group at level 54 before the end of level 55 (made it just in time) for Atal'Hakkar, with each attempt boosting me by half a level. The problem with the Sunken Temple is that people only attempt half of it before dropping (gtg!!!), or quit at the beginning (particularly at off-peak times when it takes forever to get someone else) because it's one of those long ones with the tedious puzzle that you can only do by looking at WoWWiki, and the boss you need to kill is something people feel is optional now they can immediately port out after killing Eranikus (yeah, I know, the dragons and dragonkin come looking for you but tbh most people leave right away afterwards). It took me until halfway up level 55 to get Morph's tooth and I wasn't even going to bother until someone told me the stuff you get from Orgtinc is pretty nice.
The Test of Lore on my Horde shammy is similar. When you get to the end of that wonderful and fun questline, the SM Library is just about to drop off the bottom of your LFG radar. A fix would be nice, widening the level requirements slightly since quest chains often take some time to complete.
Balmazer Feb 4th 2010 6:13PM
I think UBRD might be bugged as I ran it once cleared the whole place with the group in about four hours. Once cleared what do we find out? There's no loot bag or anything acknowledging that we had, in fact beat it.
I now have nightmares of that place.
ozreece77 Feb 4th 2010 6:42PM
Did the princess die before the emperor?
If she dies, then you dont get any loot. Think this has been mentioned someplace else already.
Also, I must confess to bad behaviour on my first run of Auchenei Crypts. Having never set foot in there before, i had no idea of what mobs were capable of doing. On the very first pack of mobs, it was a complete disaster, mobs were running everywhere, people were dieing, we all wiped.. except for the tank. I thought he must have teleported out without me noticing or something like that and i was livid. I yelled at him asking wtf he was doing then promptly dropped group. Afterwards, i started to wonder if something else had happened and decided to check the combat log, and noticed that members of the party had been attacking him. I checked WOWWIKI and noticed a mob called the Phantom Possessor, which has a 5s channelling spell which will control a party member for 1 minute..... DOH. Next time through, it went much better. :P
Robsato Feb 5th 2010 12:03PM
I had the same. I just entered a ticket and a GM contacted me and gave me the bag.
Aedilhild Feb 4th 2010 6:43PM
Nearly all of the Old World instances I ran with the Dungeon Finder were typical learning experiences, helped along with the occasional all-heirloom breeze.
Ironically, my recent experience in Outland has been a comedy of errors, mostly a result of incompetent tanks — but chaos is not what I expected through 58-68. I must have started Mana Tombs five times, none clearing, all but one of them falling apart by about the third pull.
Here's to an improvement in Northrend.
