Breakfast Topic: Are You Ready for Some Football?

Anyhow, it was a good game, if not the best Super Bowl I've seen in years. But what it really got me thinking of was Warcraft football. Believe it or not, football in Warcraft is totally canon. If you don't believe me, you should watch the end credits for Warcraft III. With that in mind, I got to thinking about what an Azerothian football league might look like, what cities and villages would field teams, and who'd win the superbowl.
I'm sure a lot of people's first instinct would be to say that a Horde team full of tauren and orcs, perhaps from the Warsong Clan, would be the clear favorite, but you need a bit of speed and agility too. Besides, an orc probably couldn't tackle a good gnome running back. A small moving target like that would be tough to hit. I'd also bet elves would be pretty good quarterbacks.
So in honor of the real world Super Bowl, I'll ask: What would the AFL (Azerothian Football League) look like? What mascots would we see? What cities and villages would the teams hail from? Would we see solely Horde and Alliance teams, or would some of the neutral factions get in on the action? And of course, who'd take home the final trophy at the end of the year?

Of course you assume that Azerothians would play Gridiron.
;)

Real Azerothians play Aussie rules football.
That, or Badminton.

It's too bad they're playing American.... I really want to see a gnome try to kick a ball 3/4 his size.
P.S. @ Daniel Whitcomb
this years super bowl was pretty good, but Giants vs. Pats was the best game I've ever seen in my 30 years of watching football.

Ah, Americans calling their game "football" is weird.
At least the real football (you know, the most popular game in the world) is actually played using feet most of the time. :-p

unless you happen to be Henry, those Irish were robbed is all I'm saying :P

What's this real football that you speak of?.... oh, you must mean soccer.
Yea, soccer is played in more places thoughout the world and I guess you could say that makes it more popular....outside America.

Yes funny that - language is different in different countries. Why, even a common language, say English, has different dialects in different places. Weird.
Hilus Feb 9th 2010 9:05AM
Yeah, i really don't understand why it's called "FOOTball"...when they use their foot only, what? 3% of total time? (kick off, field goal, and when you can't get the 10 yards)...
Xenikos Feb 9th 2010 9:45AM
The British are to blame, actually. It was their sport "Rugby football" that became gridiron. Americans just didn't remove the "football" part of the name.

We could call it Passy-throwball and we'd still love it.
You could call soccer "real football", no handsyball, or even Deathball *(tm) and we'd still hate it.
I mean, we took the most known, most famous, at one point arguably the best "football" player, brought him to LA and we *still* didn't give a damn. Hell, most Americans couldn't even name one American Soccer team. (Or two worldwide teams)
The reason "football" (soccer) is so popular worldwide is that all you need to play it is a ball and maybe a few sticks to mark the goal posts. Any one with an inflated goat bladder and a flat stretch of dirt, grass or sand can play it. (and I mean that with the utmost respect to the game and it's accessibility)

Speaking as an official non-American, I feel obligated to point out that American football is a very, very silly sport.
Any game where they have to give the referee a microphone so he can explain what's going on is just too darned complicated.

Ahhh England and America,
Two countrys seperated by a shared language
Just be grateful america isnt in the EU. They would make you change ALL the names of things you like to be 'multinationally compatable'
jonahb Feb 9th 2010 8:09AM
Tauren would be #@$ kicking blocks
Narayana Feb 9th 2010 10:21AM
Perhaps, but I think the fact that Tauren can't be mages would be a huge disadvantage. If we're talking American Football, the fact that mages can blink 20 yards and that the spell has a cooldown less than the play clock tells me that the team fielded by Dalaran would be unstoppable.

I'd certainly tune in for the Tauren vs Gnome fight.
