Lichborne: Blood DPS 101, Page 3

9. PvE Damage Rotations
Before we get into actual damage rotations, this is a good as any place to reconfirm that yes, Blood Presence is the only presence you'll want for DPSing. Unholy Presence's extra refresh time just doesn't come fast enough to make a difference in how many weapon strikes you churn out. You will get more damage from the general damage buff on Blood Presence.
As far as single target damage rotations, your main object is to get diseases on, then churn out as many Heart Strikes as you can while they're up to do maximum damage. In practice, that ends up looking something like this.
I. Just before the pull, use Horn of Winter to give yourself some extra runic power and the buff. You can also pop Hysteria quickly here if you want.
II. Use Icy Touch and Plague Strike to get your diseases on your target.
III. Churn out two Heart Strikes with your blood runes. If you are fighting 2 mobs at once in close proximity to each other and expect the fight to last more than a handful of seconds, make one of these Pestilence. Your Heart Strike hits two targets, so having disease on both those targets makes it hurt more. IV. Use Death Strike to use up your last two runes. Yes, it is better to use Death Strike over Obliterate. Death Strike does a decent amount of damage thanks to talents, and won't remove your diseases like Obliterate will.
V. By now, you should have enough runic power for one Death Coil, if not two. You can use either Death Coil or Dancing Rune Weapon here, depending on your available cool downs and needs. You can also use Horn of Winter or Hysteria here if needed, but don't use too many abilities, or your diseases will drop before you've completely spent your next set of runes. VI. By now, your runes should have refreshed. Throw out another Death Strike, then, if you've been fast enough that your diseases aren't about to drop, 4 quick Heart Strikes. If your diseases drop, refresh them instead.
VII. Once your runes are spent, use your runic power dumps and cool downs again, be they Death Coil, Dancing Rune Weapon, or whatever. Once your runes refresh, reapply diseases and start again.
In Common death knight theory crafter short hand that's:
HoW->IT->PS->HS->HS->DS->Dump->DS->HS->HS->HS->HS->Dump
In short, your priority system is something as follows: Get your diseases up and spread to all targets, Use Death Strike, Use Heart Strikes, use Runic Power Dumps. That's how you maximize your DPS on one or two targets.
For AoE DPS, you can still do some decent damage, although again, not as much as an equally skilled and geared frost or unholy DPSer. You can actually more or less use your single target rotation, but use Blood Boil instead of Heart Strike. Also, replace your first Blood Boil with a Pestilence in order to spread diseases to all targets.
10. Glyphs
Major Glyphs
Most blood DPSers will use the following three major glyphs:
Glyph of Death Strike is essentially mandatory for blood death knights. It's one of the things that keeps you from having to waste 10 points in the frost tree by making Death Strike powerful enough to overtake Obliterate, or at least to be worth using to churn out Death runes. Glyph of Dancing Rune Weapon is another one that should be mandatory for a good PvE DPS blood death knight. 5 more seconds to churn out some extra Heart Strikes is certainly a good thing. Glyph of Dark Death is your best bet for your 3rd slot. You'll be casting a lot of Death Coils, so this will add up.
It's worth noting here that some blood DPSers replace Glyph of Dark Death with Glyph of Disease. The advantage here is that you only have to use one rune to refresh your diseases instead of two, freeing up runes for another Heart Strike. This also allows you to hit two targets with a more powerful Heart Strike since your diseases will be on the second target thanks to Pestilence. The downsides are a loss Death Coil DPS and a much more complicated rotation that can be easily derailed if you allow your diseases to drop. Because of this, switching a point from Morbidity to max out Epidemic is also pretty much mandatory. Essentially, only focused and advanced blood DPSers should try the Glyph of Disease route.
Minor Glyphs
While there's no absolutely mandatory minor glyphs, I'd recommend getting Glyph of Raise Dead to save your pocket book, Glyph of Pestilence to make sure you hit as many mobs as possible in those massive AoE battles, and Glyph of Horn of Winter to keep that very nice buff up longer just in case your forget to recast it for a bit or can't spare the global cool down to do so.
11. Gems
Gemming is pretty simple: Gem for strength. Bold Cardinal Rubies are your friend. You really don't need anything else. Gemming straight strength will almost always give you better bang for your buck than gemming for slot bonuses or even for hit or expertise (That doesn't mean you shouldn't get to the hit or expertise caps, just that you should focus on getting them on gear). The only real exception here is that you'll want to socket one Nightmare Tear in activate your meta gem, which will be a Relentless Earthsiege Diamond. Yes, it has agility, which is technically lackluster for us, but no meta gem is amazing for death knight DPS, and the Relentless Earthseige has the easiest to meet meta gem requirements while still providing some use.
12. End-Game Enchants
Be aware that this list does not take into account any profession-specific enchants or kits you may have access to.
- Weapon: Rune of the Fallen Crusader
- Head: Arcanum of Torment
- Shoulders: Greater Inscription of the Axe
- Gloves: Enchant Gloves - Major Strength or Enchant Gloves - Precision if you need more hit rating.
- Bracers: Enchant Bracers - Greater Assault
- Chest: Enchant Chest - Powerful Stats
- Cloak: Enchant Cloak - Greater Speed
- Belt: Eternal Belt Buckle (Not an enchant, technically, but remember to grab it)
- Legs: Icescale Leg Armor
- Boots: Enchant Boots - Icewalker. You may also want to consider Tuskarr's Vitality if you already have 8% Hit.

thanks im going to get duel spec now so i can have blood too
Pyromelter Feb 9th 2010 4:27PM
Blood is just freakin awesome. I can't quite put my finger on it, but playing a blood death knight just makes you feel OP (at least when leveling), like you are a real hero just tearing through things. Blood tanking is very similar to dps'ing too, with similar talents but more of the damage reducing/dodge ones of course leaving aside some of the dps talents. For whatever reason, Blood spec just feels more "death-knighty" than the other specs. Dual-wielding frost is too much finesse. Unholy can be great, but is closer to like what an affliction warlock does, with a ramp up time and a steady stream of dps, instead of the massive burst and big hits of blood.
s.xcderfv Feb 9th 2010 4:06PM
Unholy is the only viable raiding spec atm.
Nazgûl Feb 9th 2010 4:09PM
You're most certainly wrong there. While Unholy is the most prominent and has more raid utility than Blood, Blood Death Knights are still very competitive DPS on single target fights like Festergut and Saurfang.
Pyromelter Feb 9th 2010 4:30PM
Unholy is generally accepted as the higher DPS to single-target, but blood is definitely viable. The difference between the two on single-target fights is about as close as any class in the game with 2 viable dps specs. The link I provided below shows a lot of unholy doing top dps, but there were definitely a good amount of blood specced DK's in there. For fights with a lot of adds, yes, unholy is far superior (I'm looking at you Dreamwalker).
Aaron Feb 9th 2010 5:02PM
If you only have one DPS DK, you probably want him to be unholy. However, if you have more than one DPS DK, you'll want your best geared to be unholy and then the rest to be blood. In this way you'll have hysteria and abomination's might and you will no longer have overlapping ebon plague, which is worthless.
Valt Feb 9th 2010 5:04PM
@Nazgûl
Agreeing with you most part. Blood gives melee buff, unholy caster buff. I think blood gives more raid utility with hysteria. But some could say that ebon plague on multiple targets is far superior (and it kinda is depends on setup)
However the reason I (note the word I) hate hate blood is because its mindless Heart strike and deathstrike spam. Its worse than ret "priority system". There, I said it. Flame on.
Blood doesnt scale that well in this tier. While there might be "good dps that are blood" in some guilds unholy would most likely beat them by far.
Quote:
Up until the current patch, Unholy’s one greatest weakness had always been sustained single target dps. It had been the flaw in an otherwise near perfect spec. With the reworking Scourge Strike received, this is no longer the case. Unholy can keep up with – and surpass, in the current tier – both Blood and Frost in this area.
In short. I wish this article was "Unholy 101" because of the recent changes and the "more complex priority system" and to get people actually out of "mindless blood".
atomicstrawberry Feb 9th 2010 5:11PM
@Nazgûl: Blood is a terrible spec for DPS against Saurfang. Heart Strike is essentially a frontal cleave and it will hit the blood beasts, which will usually pull one onto you, which means you'll be in melee with one, taking damage, buffing Saurfang and probably wiping your raid.
It's not really feasible to hold off your Heart Strike for later either. The beasts pop out every few seconds and are in range of your strike for up to 5-10 secs, and you're throwing out 6 heart strikes every rotation. You're basically forced to throw in an extra DS and swap HS with BS in order to keep it safe, which is a big DPS loss.
mel Feb 9th 2010 6:39PM
if blood beasts are in range of melee for more than 3 seconds, your ranged are doing it wrong.
Noz. Feb 9th 2010 9:48PM
Unholy is the best current spec for endgame.
Yes,.. Blood is viable, but you single target DPS is lower thanks to the New improved SS.
You don't believe me? OK, then il give you the Elitiest Jerks link and you decide.

JUST this morning I dusted off my abandoned at 72 DK, specced blood and tried a few regular dungeons. I was looking to see if you guys had done a blood DK 101 yet, and here it is. It's like the universe wants me to get into it.
Nazgûl Feb 9th 2010 4:08PM
Not a bad article, but a couple of things to nitpick.
As a Blood Knight, I use the Chaotic Skyflare Diamond as my Meta gem because there are two pieces in my gear with blue sockets. I socket the two blue gems in there to activate my meta and walk away with an extra 12 Strength from socket bonuses. I bring this up to point out that while Relentless may be a better choice for some, it isn't the end-all of Meta gems for Death Knights as you made it sound.
Secondly, you mention the rotation but don't lay it out plain and simple where to use Hysteria and other cooldowns, instead opting to vaguely say "if you want." I find it best to attempt to synchronize these cooldowns (potion, Hysteria, Rune Weapon) to get the maximum benefit. This may seem like common sense to most, but for fledgling Blood Death Knights it will improve your DPS considerably.
Pyromelter Feb 9th 2010 4:36PM
You use the relentless diamond because a nightmare tear satisfies all the requirements for that, and that frees you up to put red or yellow gems wherever you want. Using another blue or purple gem will always be a dps loss, even with a socket bonus. Let's say you have a blue socket with +6 STR. You gonna put a dreadstone with 10str/15stam over a +20 bold ruby? That's still -4 strength you are missing out on there, and you aren't getting any more crite or haste out of the deal. This is why all plate dps'ers use relentless earthsiege. Blue/purple gems are always a dps loss even with the extra crit from the CSD. The math for that has been theorycrafted many times over. If Dragon's Eye Gems were prismatic, then for sure CSD would be better than RED; but this isn't 3.09 anymore, and that's just how it is.
Boombaclot Feb 9th 2010 4:56PM
ewww so u matched a blue socket to get what? 15stam and a loss of 10 str so for ur 12 str bonus u lose 20str and goin 30stam which does nothing for PvE dmg. If you use the other meta with a nightmare tear or whatever (+10 to all stats) u match the requirements for the gem and get 10 str and 10 agi(ap and crit)
Sterb Feb 9th 2010 5:56PM
Here's why it's ok (in some cases) to gem a purple gem in addition to your nightmare tear. The 21 crit metagem yields more crit and applies to your spells as well. That difference can make up for some amount of strength loss. I haven't seen a comprehensive workup for Blood what the breaking point is.
Nazgûl Feb 9th 2010 6:28PM
I think you missed my point. My point wasn't "DON'T USE RELENTLESS," but rather, "Use what works for your gear." Relentless and Chaotic are both solid choices, and it depends entirely upon your gear what choice is best for you.
atomicstrawberry Feb 9th 2010 11:02PM
Dancing Rune Weapon always inherits your current stats, so it's worth making a DRW macro like:
#showtooltip Dancing Rune Weapon
/use Potion of Speed
/cast [target=player] Hysteria
/cast Dancing Rune Weapon
(adding any on-use trinkets you have before Hysteria as well).
The other thing that's important with DRW are that you should cast it at the *end* of the rotation, during the second RP dump. This is so that you are leading in with diseases. DRW mirrors all your strikes and also casts its own diseases, so for the period it's up you've essentially got your disease DoTs doing 50% extra damage. They also count as if they were your diseases, so you get bonus damage as if you had 4 diseases up instead of 2 from your strikes. As such you may be able to get a significant DPS boost by skipping your first RP dump phase and instead casting Empower Rune Weapon the instant all your runes are off cooldown to immediately bring them back up.
gamefreak Feb 9th 2010 4:10PM
You tell them DKs! Im sick of them rolling on Agility weapons and jewelry. "It gives us crit" they say, pisses me off as a hunter.
kidfiction Feb 9th 2010 5:03PM
It isnt fully unjustified, agility also will translate into raw attack power with bladed armor, however agility for a dk is kinda like haste for a hunter - sure its nice to have but no one should really be prioritizing it.
Rhabella Feb 9th 2010 4:50PM
because every weapon is a hunter weapon, amirite?
