Reader UI of the Week: Your Addon/UI Columnist

As the new addon and user interface columnist, I've been given the task of not only finding and informing the WoW.com community about new, useful and awesome addons, but also the unique job of taking a look at the community's user interfaces and highlighting some of the awesome creativity and innovations that the community can share. I want this column to be very reader oriented - let's go on this amazing addon journey together!
Since WoW.com hasn't done a Reader UI of the Week in a while, in lieu of a submission I thought I would profile my own personal user interface and addon set up. A few people in the comments to my first AddOn Spotlight and in some e-mails I received wanted to see my UI to get a better feel for what I find to be aesthetically acceptable and necessary. I'll keep the list strictly to the addons that are core to my game experience and leave out the fringe addons for later columns. If you have any questions or need an addon recommendation, please send me an e-mail and hopefully we can find something that sates your addon desire. Without further ado, here is what I see:

Are you in awe, yet? Look at all those buttons! There's no way for me to miss a spell since I have everything available to me. The action bars are large enough for me to select spells easily. My Carbonite and SexyMap maps are nice and big to show me the way to my next quest! I don't know why I have Tankadin there, since this is obviously a warlock's UI, but better safe than sorry, I'd say!
I'm sorry. This ordeal hurts too much to continue. Please forgive me. Here is my real UI:

Amazing, right? It's like you're looking through my eyes. It's like Being John Malkovich, with just a little bit less John Cusack. Here's my philosophy -- the user interface is a piece of a larger experience that includes the game proper and the situations you are put into. I want to make my user interface as unobtrusive as possible while still having incredible amounts of functionality and information at my disposal.
The backbone of my user interface is made up of six categories of addons: Skada/Omen, kgPanels, Dominos, Shadowed Unit Frames, Chatter (or Prat) and SexyMap. At some point I will chronicle all of these mods in greater detail (or detail has already been given on AddOn Spotlight). For now, these are the addons that allow me to create my simplistic, unobtrusive user interface that gives me all of the information that I need while not sacrificing screen real estate. All of the links for the addons I will discuss are located at the bottom of the article.
Skada/Omen, kgPanels and Dominos
Saving on screen real estate is one of the hardest things to do, especially since most addons come in what feels like the "large size" as their defaults. Save space by shrinking down addons and using the scale feature. Also, note your scale number as it can be easier to input that number than sight-guessing using a slider to make all of the addons the same scale size.

kgPanels is a fantastic addon for spacing out your essential interface "areas." I like to have my interface compartmentalized so that my brain knows, based on the situation, where to be looking on my screen. Checking an ability cooldown? Look at the bars and my cooldown addon above them. Before I used kgPanels, I was addicted to a few Viewport addons that made the bottom of my screen black or textured, allowing me to position addons inside of the viewport for a cleaner look. Over time, however, that style began to irk me. kgPanels does what the viewport addons did, but in a more flexible, less constrained way.
kgPanels is completely customizable for use with player made borders or other presets found in your addons. In the screenshot below, you can see that I have given each of my addons the same simple black border in order to make everything look uniform.

ShadowedUF, Chatter and SexyMap
Simplistic unit frames are key to my set up. I'm personally a fan of Shadowed Unit Frames because of the wealth of information the bars can show while at the same time keeping real estate costs down. My bars are a little bigger than they have to be, mostly because I don't want to strain my eyes too much. Shadowed Unit Frames allows me to have an enemy cast bar, health and mana in the same simple window. Cascading down to the right of the Target's unit frame are Target of Target and Focus, which are not visible in the screenshot.
Chatter and Prat are the two chat addons that I usually recommend, mostly because of their simplicity. Chatter is the current addon that I am using. The buttons for chat are removed, the mouse's scroll wheel moves chat up or down, and the detached text input bar allows me to fit the Chatter window snugly into the corner of the main bottom bar. The learning curve on inputing text directly in front of me took a few hours of typing, but the result has been phenomenal and less intrusive than ever. Many players, including myself, consider the chat addon to be the most important addon. In the early days of WoW, the chat system was constrained and lacking in features - chat addons quickly made communication easier.
SexyMap is my map addon of choice. Many people are turned off by SexyMap because of the first preset that appears when the addon is first installed. I implore you to tinker around with the settings and shapes and create your own map. SexyMap is basically a platform for minimap development and allows wonderful flexibility when dealing with the size, shape, border textures and icons of your minimap.
The Bottom Line
I hope you all enjoyed that little peek into my mind when it comes to user interface development and creativity. I like using smaller, lightweight and customizable addons that fit together nicely and allow the whole package to come together seamlessly. My UI took me approximately two to three hours to perfect, mostly because I was just learning these addons and their configurations. There was at least a half hour of drawing boxes on a piece of paper to get everything just right, location wise.
But this column isn't about me! It's about you! So let's see all of those inventive, fun, and awesome user interfaces that you guys have come up with. Each week, I'd like to use a Reader's UI to learn an important lesson about user interface creation and, hopefully, help everyone have a better gameplay experience as their user interface and addons work for them and not just get in the way.

I'd also like to see some enlarged screens if possible!

Wow, I really like your interface, minimalistic and yet gives you all the info you need. I might have to rework my setup to kinda mimic this, very nice!
Finnicks Feb 10th 2010 3:15AM
I've been using a setup like this (with all the essential information on the bottom part of the screen leaving the middle 2/3s for viewing) for a while, but what it was just the action bars organized w/ Dominos.
What I lacked, until today, was something to block out the different sections and make the UI seem more substantial.
THANK YOU FOR SHOWING ME kgPanels! It's the best addon ever.... I turned THIS:

People on wow.com wouldn't know a good UI if it hit them in the face. Every UI without exception was awful in the previous reader UI of the week columns, and it seems that hasn't changed.
Reasons why this UI is really bad:
•Showing an INSANE amount of buttons
•Standard (terrible) texture on unit frames
•Sexymap, need I say more?
•Its cluttered already, and your not even in combat.
•Your showing threat and damage meters, even though your in the middle of Silvermoon.
"what I find to be aesthetically acceptable and necessary." =/
Hollow Leviathan Feb 10th 2010 5:03AM
@finnicks Holy crap your UI takes up almost all of your screen!
@Jadfer OK, let's see your UI.
Pyro Feb 10th 2010 7:11AM
I'm a healer and would like to be able to post a screenshot of my healing ui in combat, but not sure how to get the screenshot from my wow/screenshot folder to here, lol. Could someone tell me how to post it?
kesherz Feb 10th 2010 8:56AM
@pyro:
You'll need to upload the screenshot somewhere like Flickr or Picasa, or another photo sharing service. Then you can just link it in your comment.
Hoggersbud Feb 10th 2010 10:50AM

Submit your own.
>•Your showing threat and damage meters, even though your in the middle of Silvermoon.<
One might think by reading the article, why the two were shown. Not because that's normally how he has it, but because...he wanted to show them to us?
I dunno, one might think that.
Finnicks Feb 10th 2010 7:42PM
Okay seriously, I feel the need to reply here.
First of all, differnet people have different tastes in UI. My UI might not your cup of tea, but that doesn't mean it's universally terrible.
Secondly, the point of my comment was to thank the author for showing me kgPanels, not get an scathingly critical OPINION back on the entire thing.
As for your points:
I don't know what class you play, but as as warlock and a druid healer I use every single button on that screen, frequently enough to merit them having a spot. See the major block on the right? The ones toward the top see constant use, and as it goes toward the bottom their use becomes more situational. They ALL have key bindings (I use an old-style Logitech G11, the buttons are organized to mimic the layout of the G keys and are bound as such). The left major block consists mostly of buffs and consumables that I use often enough and don't want to have to open my bags every single time for. It also helps me keep track of how many I have of each, again without having to constantly open and close my bags.
Texture is a matter of personal preference, thank you very much. While I'm still playing with it, I happen to like those textures just fine. If you prefer metallic, bright purple, "futuristic" looking UI panels, that's YOUR preference.
Yes, you need say more. BasicMinimap serves all my needs just fine.
It's not cluttered at all. Everything is blocked off into sections. And yes I have two chat windows, because I cannot stand having Guild Chat, Whispers, and Trade all mixed into the same window, and since I like Guild Chat and whispers visible at all times, they get their own window. Trade gets a tab on the main chat window.
As HoggersBud strongly implied (thank you), did you not think perhaps I had it visible because I was taking a screenshot of my UI? Also, in the "new ui" shot I had also just been at the target dummy practicing w/ the new layout, and Skada takes up so little space when there's only solo data, why bother making it hide itself?
And to reply to Hollow Lev: 1/3 is not "almost all the screen". Your UI probably takes up the same amount of space you'll just have it all spread out. I like to have a nice big open viewing area to see the game through. :3
Finkployd Feb 10th 2010 10:30PM
I will explain to you why your UI is garbage and why nobody should ever use it including yourself. no matter what your tastes are there are no excuses for a bad UI.
1. Not centered
2.Different fonts
3.useless bars
4.your Chat box is the focus of your UI
5.You made the chat box as big as you possibly could
6.You made another chat box
7.Different textures
8. you have titan panel with only 2 plug-ins. whats the point?
9.Why put spacing in your menu bar? to take up more space?
10.Too many devisions of your bars.
11. *cough* Xperl *cough*
jbodar Feb 11th 2010 10:14PM
@Finnicks
Some constructive ideas:
Have you checked out Shadowed Unit Frames? I used x-perl before and to me SUF trounces x-perl, though SUF takes a tiny bit of digging to turn on more standard x-perl functions -- like frame highlights for curable debuffs or party targets. I haven't been "missing" any functions though.
Dominos lets you change the opacity of your bars, so that whole left block could be made almost invisible except on mouseover. Or you could convert the seldom-used icons to Opie wheels -- which take up no action bar space. As a Lock, I love Opie for summons/stones.

galestrom Feb 9th 2010 7:14PM
+1 for Sexymap.
If you have a gathering profession, take a moment to check out it's Gathering Mode. (For simplicity sake, just open up your keybindings menu, and bind Gathering Mode to a key.) Doing this allows you to super-impose the mini-map over the main display, showing tracking dots in a manner that makes them very easy to spot and follow.
Great column, thanks. :)
Procrastinator Feb 9th 2010 7:16PM
Very good post. Perhaps you can do a future article on addons that don't use a lot of memory for those of us with older machines!
ShadowEric Feb 9th 2010 10:33PM
It's CPU usage you should worry about, not memory usage, particularly with an older computer. There's an obsession out there with memory usage, which is unwarranted. Addons memory usage is but a fraction of what WoW needs.
Rockstaert Feb 10th 2010 3:42AM
But that fraction sometimes makes the difference. No way that i can use addons like QuestHelper on my old crappy pc. Without heavy addons i can play, but the larger ones are just not an option.
Ozzard Feb 10th 2010 4:49AM
WoW will cache textures and models, and will move them to/from disk as required. It can't do the same for add-on memory, so add-on memory is relatively more expensive as it reduces the cache size. On my desktop*, about 50 Mbytes of add-on is the difference between being responsive in Dalaran versus disconnecting regularly as the system is paging too hard.
* Not "old", 2G RAM, Windows XP, is relatively tuned to keep large backgrond processes out of the way, but I do have other things open than just WoW as it's a working machine
