WoW will cache textures and models, and will move them to/from disk as required. It can't do the same for add-on memory, so add-on memory is relatively more expensive as it reduces the cache size. On my desktop*, about 50 Mbytes of add-on is the difference between being responsive in Dalaran versus disconnecting regularly as the system is paging too hard.* Not "old", 2G RAM, Windows XP, is relatively tuned to keep large backgrond processes out of the way, but I do have other things open than just WoW as it's a working machine
