70% of trial players quit WoW before level 10

Now, I know what you're thinking. How many of those trial accounts are scammers, so of course they don't make it to level 10? Good point. I don't know the numbers, though I'm sure Blizzard could just look at how many of those accounts made character names by facerolling. However, the account thieves aren't strapped for cash and have been known to not only purchase full accounts to do their evil bidding; but will also reactivate lapsed accounts, slap an Authenticator on and farm/scam away. So the 70% may very well include a large percentage of potential subscribers by process of elimination, since the scammers can afford multiple accounts.
As I've said before, the pre-level 10 changes we already have help us introduce our loved ones to the game. And I think we're all looking forward to the new starting zones and leveling experiences we'll find in Cataclysm. Particularly now that we've had a taste of the new quest mechanics in the Love is in the Air quests, such as PIlfering Perfume and Hot on the Trail.

So much stuff about conference calls... makes me wonder how you guys get that info - it Michael Sacco hiding in the rafter at Blizz headquarters with a tiny tape-deck and microphone?
Mir Feb 11th 2010 1:10PM
Most large corporations (can't think of one of the top of my head that doesn't) have "public" conference calls to update investors.
mel Feb 11th 2010 1:26PM
Mir is correct.
Most large corporations have quarterly calls to discuss earnings/strategy/etc. The one at the end of the fiscal year is usually the most important because it discusses how the company met the goals for the past year, the goals for the next year (and often the strategy to meet those goals).
Think of it as a State of the Union address for corporations.
Drakkenfyre Feb 11th 2010 2:22PM
Public calls can be listened to by anybody, hence the term public call.
You simply dial in and listen to the call recording. I don't have the number for this one, but I am sure it's somewhere.

Hi dude ....
The complete official transcript of the Activision Blizzard press conference can be found on specialized sites the day after:

Financial info is just too important for the stock holders....

To topic:
I agree, the present lvl 1 - 12 grind is terribly boring. Players are used to getting more than 1 ability to start.
Hopefully Cat.Xpac will make it a lot more fun - like playing Fable or Mass Effect or even War or Conan at the beginnings.
Easily Conan has the best 1 - 10 start - its the rest that was a let down - Talking quest givers with A1 rate voice actors is very immersive. And abilities that auto learn as you ding your early levels would be much better, since Blizzard is all about telling a story.

You: Hia.
Someone: BUY MY GOLD!

Trial accounts can't whisper you. The ones that whisper you were made on stolen accounts, as are all the ones spamming /trade.
Magma Feb 11th 2010 1:08PM
Very interesting indeed..
SamLowry Feb 12th 2010 11:44PM
And how many of the trial accounts are nothing but a level one troll rogue, or any other race/class combo that was nearly impossible to find if you wanted to complete a holiday achievement?
Not that I'll publicly admit to opening a trial account to do such a thing....

Please feel free to downrank this if it is a stupid question, but what are the new quest mechanics in the Love is in the Air quests? I've down a few of the dailies and part of the quest chain (up to Man on the Inside, which I haven't done yet), and they don't seem any different to me.
Radioted Feb 11th 2010 1:10PM
Yeah, I was curious about this, too. Unless they mean how you grind the love tokens?
Robin Torres Feb 11th 2010 1:11PM
Not a stupid question.
http://www.wowhead.com/?quest=24541
and
http://www.wowhead.com/?quest=24851
are part of the Goblin Detective quest chain and employ some really fun stuff.
I'll update the post to be clearer.

I have to say "Grind the love tokens" is the dirtiest sounding WoW mechanic I've ever heard.
I was wondering the same thing too - those were fun little quests. Thanks for the head's up!
macster Feb 11th 2010 1:25PM
"I have to say "Grind the love tokens" is the dirtiest sounding WoW mechanic I've ever heard."
Nah, I think the Sons Of Hodir dailies have that licked.
So to speak.
Kaz Feb 11th 2010 1:42PM
"Nah, I think the Sons Of Hodir dailies have that licked."
Well, right now you can go from "Thrusting Hodir's Spear" to "Blowing Hodir's Horn" and then right back to "Grind Love Tokens," bonus points for doing it while riding "The Big Love Rocket."
UTech Feb 11th 2010 2:06PM
Let's not forget "Polishing Hodir's Helmet".

Hot and Cold...
Dah Feb 11th 2010 1:08PM
ya, when I first tried wow, I quit at around level 8. It wasn't until maybe 6 months later where I picked the game up again and gave it an honest go.
They really need to do more to make the intro levels not only easier, but also more interesting. Spamming 1 button on boars over and over really lowers your expectations of what the rest of the game will be like.
Nerglz Feb 11th 2010 1:35PM
Unreal expectations? That's pretty much what leveling is like. Someone sends you outside of town to gather 6 of this, kill 10 of that, kill Hogger.
