Totem Talk: Enhancement 201, spell selection

If I told you the enhancement shaman basic spell rotation was: SR, FE, SW, MW5_LB, MT(0), LS(1), ES_SS, SS, FS, ES, LL, FN would you run away screaming?
What if I told you that was just for single target boss encounters and there's a different priority for boss fights that require changing targets, another priority for boss fights with heavy adds, and yet another priority for trash mobs. Scared yet?
It's OK. Please come back. This is what we Enhancers have bouncing around in our head. I'll make everything alright by breaking it down into a few easy-to-remember chunks. Because we all like chunks.
My 101 article could have been more appropriately named "How to play enhancement in raids or dungeons if you are recently level 80 or would like to make it your off spec," but that was a bit long so I cut it down to Enhancement 101. In said article, commenter Angus noted "...enhance shaman need a simulator, a supercomputer, and a math genius to figure out what they should be gearing for at any particular moment.." I had to laugh because it's true.
Thankfully we enhancers have math geniuses calculating the theorycrafting and supercomputer geniuses writing the code to the simulator to help us tweak our output at any level for any given situation. However, this article is not for theorycrafting and not about running simulations.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not anti-EnhSim. Just this week I went through a detailed iterative sim on Stoney's gear to recalculate optimal gemming and then maximize my output with a new rotation. EnhSim is a seriously awesome tool -- and we'll get to it in a later post -- but using it is a process. In fact at progression/end-game levels of play it's practically required for optimization. But for the Totem Talk enhancement columnist to say "sim it" is just a huge cop-out, and doesn't exactly make for good reading.
Today's article isn't about the utmost optimal and ideal rotation, nor is it about how to get that for yourself. It's about simplifying a complex rotation. This is to help the new-to-80 (or thereabouts) enhancement shaman wrap their head around a basic core spell rotation.
My goal in this article is to (1) break down the complex rotation into easy-to-remember chunks, then (2) put it together into a usable rotation that will work in most boss scenarios, and (3) explain why we do the things we do.
A shocking macro
There is one macro above all others that will simplify your life as an enhancement shaman. Even for the most anti-macro enhancer out there this little one will save headaches and action bar space. It is:#showtooltipThere are a few variations on this macro but for the purpose of this article I'm sticking with the one above. Some players prefer to separate the shocks on to different buttons, others (including me) prefer a more complex but flexible macro, but of all the shocking macros. But this macro is the best place to start. Learn it and hug it and love it and squeeze it with all your heart and call it George. George the Shock Macro.
/castsequence reset=18/combat Flame Shock, Earth Shock, Earth Shock
The reason this macro is so important is because Flame Shock lasts for 18 seconds. If FS is reapplied before the end then it's wasted DPS. This is like a pro-tip and a beginner tip rolled into one. Add George the Shock Macro to your macro book because we'll be using it right away.
Break it down
The best way to think about the enhancement spell selection is to break it down into two parts: rotation and situation. Once it's broken down into these two section you'll see the rotation actually isn't all that complex. But you should still [Feign Complexity](Rank 10) when talking to the filthy rogues in your guild. Don't let them think you've got it easy. I fully expect you to go on and on about how you can successfully track at 15 spell rotation and still beat him in DPS.Rotation
There are 5 spells in the rotation section. Commit these to memory. They are not cycled through in a straight sequence; instead, they're used in a priority order. Go down the list until you find one that's available and hit it. Then start again at the top. This is the simplified rotation:
- Lightning Bolt with 5 stacks of Maelstrom Weapon (MW5_LB)
- Stormstrike (SS)
- George the shock macro (FS, ES, ES)
- Lava Lash (LL)
- Fire Nova (FN)
Situation
Everything else in the enhancement arsenal is situational. The general rule of thumb is use them as soon as they become available or to be need refreshed.First up are the situations where spells need to be refreshed. When either of these spells run out they become highest priority on the next GCD. (PRO TIP: whenever I have a free GCD I refresh whichever one is closest to running out, that way I don't have to interrupt my rotation as often.)
- Magma Totem (MT) – Keep this down at all times because when your rotation comes around to Fire Nova, if you don't have MT down you'll miss out on the FN blast. Plus the passive damage is FTW.
- Lightning Shield (LS) – Gotta love the Static Shock! Nine charges goes by pretty fast, especially if you have 2pc T9. The passive damage isn't huge, but it's important enough to keep this up at all times.
- Shamanistic Rage (SR) – Under normal circumstances this should be used at or below 30-40% mana. 45 seconds goes by fast (60 second CD less 15 second duration) so you'll notice it being up often. If you have 2pc T10 then SR should be the very first thing cast after auto attack and then hit as the highest priority every time it comes available. (PRO TIP: with 2pc T10 create a macro to sync trinkets with SR)
- Feral Spirit (SW) – Wolves actively scale with your stats, meaning if you get trinket procs while they are active, their stats will increase with yours. However they should be out before Heroism/Bloodlust is cast to get the full benefit from the buff.
- Fire Elemental (FE) – On a 10 minute CD this spell should be available for most boss attempts even after wipes. As a general rule it's not worth glyphing for FE. One important thing to note is that your FE does not scale once the totem is planted; this is the opposite of SW. If you are dropping FE in a fight then plan on getting some procs up first and then put the totem down.
Bonus point
If you want bonus points there's a special situation in the rotation called ES_SS. This means if Earth Shock and Stormstrike are both off cooldown at the same time AND if the Stormstrike debuff is still up on the boss then cast Earth Shock first. It's not essential to the basics, but it is a step in the right direction to maximizing output. All together now
Putting it all together yields the crazy thing we saw at the beginning: SR, FE, SW, MW5_LB, MT, LS, ES_SS, SS, FS, ES, LL, FN. The spells in bold are the "rotation" spells, the others are all situation spells. I hope this helped you wrap your head around enhancement shaman spell selection. Until next time ...May all your hits be crits!

Just wanted to say ditto to this fella above me. I haven't been enhance since level 40 or so, been running dual-spec resto PVE/PVP for a year and change now. I got bored of WoW a little while ago and didn't play for a month or so, then read the Enhance 101 guide and thought a new spec might breathe some fun into the game for me. So I cobbled together a ghetto rep gear set, and while I'm still terrible at Enhance, I'm having a good time learning it. Thanks Stoney!

I'll agree to this too. My Enh shammy just got 78 last night. I've looked up other places too which had priorities a little more fleshed out but I'm assuming that's because they're for the more advanced.
Following priority proper I've already hit 2-3k on some boss fights in normal dungeons.
I know I'll have to adjust the spec here soon at 80 but any advice on: http://www.wowarmory.com/character-sheet.xml?r=Doomhammer&cn=Tarranis would be great.

Welcome everyone to the wonderful world of enhance! Glad to have ya in up in melee making a mess of things
Cetha Feb 12th 2010 9:44AM
So what's with enh shaman who don't use their totems at all? I've done too many runs in DF lately without seeing a single totem being dropped by the shaman for the length of an entire run. Blizzard has made this super easy for you now with the addition of Call of Flame (etc), so please use your totems! it helps you and everyone else.
Djinn Feb 12th 2010 10:06AM
The reason you aren't going to see a lot of enhancement shamans dropping totems in heroics is because they cost mana and for the most part in heroics as easy as they are anymore you simply don't need them except for maybe on a boss fight. For heroic trash the only time I bother dropping any kind of totem at all is if I know a pack to fear then you will get tremor totem otherwise if its not a boss fight that will last more than 20 seconds you gets no totems... Totems are for raids...
Ayden Feb 12th 2010 11:32AM
I have to disagree with your reply. Me not dropping SoE totem, and windfury, is a net loss of approx 200-400 dps for me alone, not even counting the rest of the group. Not to mention the utility that comes from dropping a quick mana totem, cleansing totem or whatnot. You have Shamanistic Rage for a reason, and if you have at least 1 point into improved StormStrike, dropping totems shouldn't be a mana issue. Do your fellow group mates, and yourself a favor and always drop those totems.
obc Feb 12th 2010 11:36AM
When i'm in a heroic with my enhanc: i always drop all totems....why wouldnt one? the mana cost is nothing to worry about, i can Firenova the trash, mana or decursetotem are there in case someone isn't doing his job correctly.
whoever doesnt is lazy and isn't supporting the lfg group the best he can. its just two more clicks each trash...
Will Feb 12th 2010 11:48AM
On bosses, sure. But dropping totems anywhere else in a 5 man heroic is just a waste of mana unless the group has replenishment. Id rather the shaman not slow the group down with constant self-watering and just drop totems on bosses :)
A few other notes, just to reiterate others' comments:
- Its a priority list, not a rotation. Do not, for example, let Earch Shock sit there off cooldown because you have to get Lava Lash in there. You'll just hurt your dps.
- That shock macro is a slippery slope. At best you free one single keybind, but on the negative side, you lose individual access to your shock spells. As is often the case in raid encounters, things don't go according to plan and for this reason its good to have single access to all spells and make up your own mind as to which one to use. Just Say No To /castsquence macros for Enh dps! :P
- No mention of Shock and Awe or some such Cooldown monitoring addon/system. Get one! -- You need it. I absolutely guarantee a 30% increase in dps at least by using a CD addon for new Enh shammies. Not only do you need to closely monitor Cooldowns in relation to one another; but you also have to watch out for things like the SS debuff on your target, refreshing lightning shield/totems, and the fire you're probably standing in as a result.

Been playing enhancement since vanilla (post windfury nerf). Nothing annoys me more than having another shaman in the group that doesn't drop totems or if they do they don't coordinate with the rest of the party on buffs.
Bubbajuju Feb 12th 2010 1:12PM
As to the mana issues, improved storm strike, shamanistic rage, and watershield more than take care of it. Regarding watershield: when the fight is over WS is up if i'm low. If others are drinking mana totem is down.
Maybe it's just me, cause i use drums for the druid & pally buffs if we need 'em too.
Angus Feb 12th 2010 1:41PM
I don't know what trash you folks have been killing, but SR does not help me in heroics much at all.
I have to pop it right as we contact a pack or else I have 10 seconds left on the buff and no enemies to swing at. It is not a 100% proc rate and I have had it do little to nothing, especially when my first instinct on that big trash pack I just dropped magma on is Fire Nova. Most of that mana vanished as soon as it came in, 1 SS later and there is nothing left of the mobs, I am still running on empty and while I can pick em up, it didn't really help my mana situation.
If I am dropping totems in every trash pack in UP, for instance, I will be OOM before I hit the 4-pack right before the valkerie. After her, it is slim pickings for packs that will actually fill the bar up as they all tend to drop too fast. Get to the 4+1 pack of bosses and I still have to be careful about it as those guys are now dropping before the 15 seconds is up.
That's just one spot I know I have mana issues dropping totems every trash pull. I know this because even though it would be a ton easier, I still do it. If someone doesn't they probably have the same issue and decided against it. Save the mana for the guy that matters isn't a horrible idea.
Let's not rag on shaman for not dropping totems. Old school shaman may still be used to ignoring them because it used to take 6 seconds of DPS time to put them down. New ones may lack the hit they need or expertise to have SR fill their bars, and the raiders may figure "I do 4.5K without them out, the trash dies in 5 seconds, who cares?"
The biggest problem is that shaman are still stuck with a mechanic that makes them have to rebuff every pull. It gets tedious.
jasonkidd1234 Feb 12th 2010 9:47AM
You didn't mention any glyphs.
As a leveling shaman I usually stuck with Feral Spirit, Stormstrike, but I'd like to know a good third. A lot of people told me that Fire Elemental Totem is pretty good, others that Windfury is better, and even some say Gylph of Shocking.
Jordan Feb 12th 2010 9:55AM
Glyphs were covered in the 101 article last week.
Jamie Feb 12th 2010 9:59AM
As a retribution paladin, I'd say you were crazy!
Tristan Feb 12th 2010 3:27PM
As a new shaman coming from a paladin, I'd say you're the new hunter!
:P
Darkseid Feb 12th 2010 10:01AM
Definitely made more sense by the end! LOL At first I was like WTF, Enhance rotation aint that complicated! But by the end I saw where you were coming from. I haven't been making use of FS and still have been topping dps charts. Now with that macro(and yes I DO hate macros), I'm pretty excited to give this a try.
Thx for the article
Darkseid Feb 12th 2010 10:20AM
Just tried out that macro....DEFINITELY loving it...
...even as a macro hater. :-)
fatsephy Feb 12th 2010 11:00AM
I would personally recommend changing the reset time on that macro to 8 seconds. You should be pressing it every 6-7 seconds anyway 90% of the time.
If you leave it at 18 in the example Stoney has given, you'll be left casting the wrong shock most of the time in any situation that requires you to switch targets during the duration of an existing Flame Shock debuff on your previous target.
A prime example of a current content fight where this would happen (and cause a guaranteed loss of DPS) is Blood Princes in Icecrown Citadel.
In any fight where you need to switch to targets that don't die in less than say, 25 seconds, you'd lose dps with an 18 second reset.
Quick Macro 101 for people that don't understand this...
The reset time feature used in macros is the time it takes for a sequence of casts in a macro to 'reset' back to the beginning in the event that you stop using it part way through the cast sequence *from the time you stop pressing the macro*.
It will reset to the start of the sequence once it has reached the end by itself, provided you continue to press it at least once every 'x' seconds (where 'x' equals the reset time in the macro), so there is absolutely zero reason to use a reset time equal to the total time taken to complete the sequence.
Most people don't realise this, and Stoneybaby probably got that macro from elsewhere, so don't blame him for giving people a badly made macro.
rdjuanto Feb 12th 2010 11:38AM
If the macro has 1 FS and 2 ES (as shown in the article), I don't see the point of having a time reset at all. The CD for 1 FS and 2 ES accounts for the 18 sec duration of the debuff itself. I agree with Sephy on the 8sec. I'd probably have it at 4-5, even.
Also, "target" would be another good conditional reset.
Edge Feb 14th 2010 9:58PM
I think my macro included a reset for target change AND the 18 seconds, so whichever comes first. Of course this messes up your rotation should you move from the boss to some adds and then back to the boss. You might clip the FS because the macro reset when you switch back to the boss. The only way to get the maximum DPS in ANY situation is to use ES and FS separately, or to save space, use ctrl+es for fs or something in a macro.
As for the rotation, I cheat and use the shockandawe addon. I always wondered if you use this at all Stoney. Another great article!
