Breakfast Topic: Breaking the bank

I have a confession to make. I am... the world's biggest collector of useless junk in game. At this point, bank space is something that doesn't exist unless I delete something first. From trinkets to weapons to armor sets to items that are utterly and completely useless, it's all sitting in my bank, begging to be thrown away, but I simply cannot bring myself to do it.
While some call me utterly mad for hanging on to outdated items and armor, others share my passion for collecting. We commiserate over limited bank space and remember the days way back when. The days of yore when pets, mounts and keys also had to be carried in bags -- and not the fancy 24 slotters people carry around today, no sir. We had Mooncloth Bags and we liked it. Well... we didn't like it, but there wasn't really another alternative. We are obsessed. And we need bigger bags.
There is one particular thing that all of my characters banks have in common, however. A full, unused stack of Really Sticky Glue.
I mean come on. It'll come in handy someday.
So how about it -- are you a packrat? Is there something you absolutely must keep on every character? And more importantly, what's the weirdest thing in your bank?

My warrior has a Broken Chastity Belt sitting in his bank.

Thank goodness someone else shares my fascination with the item. I was beginning to think I was the only one....

No matter what, I will never give up my nubless pacifier, nor my empty barrel. The game says junk, I say priceless.

I never throw out tier gear or weapons I held onto for a long time, I know I wont ever delete my Lock's Turning Tide. Mostly cause I remember having it when it was the best caster weapon in the game, and at the time it was very special to me. And who could delete warlock gear? it's the coolest looking gear in the game.

Broken Chastity Belt from Storm Peaks?
Was it anywhere near the Sons of Hodir dailies? :D
That would be quite appropriate.

LOL omg u remind me of my boyfriend. I love him but he is a pack rat when it comes to WoW bank...he has the full hunter 60 set from pre BC days. He refuses to get rid of his useless crap so i log on in hopes to try to clear up some space by auctioning some cloth and other crap but still, the bank becomes full again despite my efforts hehe
Updawg Feb 15th 2010 9:01AM
If you ever logged on and deleted my pre-bc warrior dungeon set 1, I'd ring your neck, it took me AGES to get that.
Shadowwind Feb 15th 2010 2:28PM
Maria...PLEASE say that you log on WHILE HE'S AROUND! Think of it this way, how would you like it if he went through your real-life stuff and started randomly throwing away things, such as (for example) the necklace your grandmother gave you, an old photograph of the best vacation you were ever on, your favorite shoes, stuff like that. Bet you wouldn't like it too much, right? Same thing, just virtual.

Last week on World of Rats, we took a close look at the short, and brutal, life of the Deeprun Tram Rat, destined to become a questionable train snack. This week, we will be examining a very different type of rat: the Pack Rat!
These creatures come in all shapes and sizes, from the tiny gnomish pack rat (packraticus puntibles) to the massive tauren pack rat (packraticus delicious). Pack rats are known primarily for their obsessive hording of useless items. While some may follow a theme, such as hording armor, potions, or very pretty rocks, for others there seems to be no rhyme or reason to what they collect.
One thing pack rats all have in common, though, is their defensive nature when it comes to their collection. Watch here as a few pack rats come to the defense of another pack rat's collection. So strong is this instinct that they will defend not only their own collection, but the collections of other pack rats as well! Fascinating!
Some posit that pack rats become so attached to their collections that, upon noticing that something is missing, they will experience physical pain. Some experiments were conducted to try test this theory, but they were deemed too cruel and FAR to dangerous when the pack rat in question discovered who had been deleting a piece of his tier 3 gear every week. (Don't worry, I'm sure you'll wake from that coma one of these days, Bill! Get well soon!)
But, alas, so much is unknown about these private creatures. Perhaps, one day, we will be able to unlock the mysteries of the pack rat's psyche. Until then, we'll see you next week when we take a look at the candle-obsessed Tunnel Rat! (Or, as they are also commonly known, the Kobold.) Farewell, and goodnight from us here at World of Rats!

And, before anyone mistakes this as a "mocking" post, I myself am a pack rat. (And I'd kill for somewhere to store all my old armor/weapons/tabards/holiday items/well... you get the idea.) :)

@Shadowwind
What, like he got all that Runecloth from his dearly departed granny? Please. It's a good thing that his packrat behavior (hopefully) doesn't extend into real life though. I just watched a Hoarders marathon on A&E and that stuff's not pretty. Severely damaged lives... people losing their kids or homes, all because they value possessions too much.

When i first started playing WoW, i didn't know the banks were linked (i.e. Darn's could only be used in Darn), so i deemed them worthless. This means anything of importance I had to carry, meaning I lost all of those sentimental items i would've loved to still have.
Now, I mostly used my bank to store enchanting supplies for myself and my alts, BoA gear for my worgen mage, and holiday stuff i love and have no room for.
MightyMuffin Feb 15th 2010 8:10AM
No...I'm not. Never. I mean sure I made 6 other characters while I was leveling to deal with an "influx" in inventory...but that's it. I mean they still are maintaining a guild bank with lots of stuff that could prove useful in the coming cataclysm...yeah...
And Its not like I have a weekly ritual of cleaning out the bag/bank of either greens or useless scrolls in order to allow me another week to fill in stuff from daily runs and raids. That's just only natural. And I didn't keep all the level 5 health pots just because I thought they'd be useful when I ran out of the level 45 ones. And I didn't get all the old gear sets because I couldn't stop...
Oh who am I kidding...the reason I live is because I am a packrat! And I LOVE IT...which may mean i need some help.

I am a minimalist in life and in WoW. If I have any doubt that something will be used in the near future, in life and in WoW, I get rid of it without a second thought.
Then a week later I need it and I kick myself and tell myself that I need to start saving things. But the minimalist in me always wins.
Empty space is far more beautiful.
Aedilhild Feb 15th 2010 10:13AM
I have little tolerance for disorder and clutter. My inventory's rarely empty, but it's organized; no item without reasonable future use remains.
Thank goodness the bags of other players can't be viewed — not unless I'm standing over a player's shoulder, anyway, holding my head in my hands.
Lucidien Feb 15th 2010 5:05PM
Minimalism is how I've survived from B/C onward. If I haven't an immediate use for it, it can't be auctioned, failing that, disenchanted, failing that, vendored, then I delete it. I have an assortment of holiday/event items in my main bank, one bank-bag for BoA gear, and on each alt (and my main) One professions bag, my backpack for quest items, food/drink, and any trash I pick up is IMMEDIATELY vendored when I repair after EACH dungeon/quest-harvest. Three empty 20(ish) slot bags, and that's the way uh huh uh huh I likes it.
Which is ironic, I'm retty notorious in RL for my messiness and clutter. That said, I -
*Distracted by cluttered bags*
Axolotl Feb 15th 2010 8:16AM
I have a full guildbank tab with questitems and two 20 slot bags with old-world and outland soulbound turn-in items, for the time I will actually go and complete the rep-grinds.
zhangchi36 Feb 15th 2010 8:17AM
No way! I'm still collecting my Netherwind sets, and still missing a pair of gloves from the dungeon set 3B :P
welshtux Feb 15th 2010 8:17AM
Not sure if I would call myself a pacrat by my Paladin has kept every shield he's ever found, and my Rogue still has some flash powder in his bank....and yep every char has a full stack of really sticky glue :)
Josin Feb 15th 2010 8:17AM
Total packrat here. I've got dungeon set armor from BC, a collection of assorted shields, tabards, and Vanilla items, like my Onyxia Scale Cloak and attunement rings, etc.
Half of my bank is stocked full of RP attire: various dresses, shoes, etc. I've got things like Warbot fuel (both red and blue), the complete armor set from the Pre-Wrath event, even my Barov Peasant Caller.
