Shifting Perspectives: Bear 101, part 3

9. Basic bear gameplay:
If you want to see this in action, I recommend viewing Darksend's video guide on the bear rotation. It's fairly straightforward:
- Before you do anything else, try not to start any pull with 0 rage. Assuming you have 3/5 Furor, you can powershift until you get a proc, and/or Enrage. If you Enrage and you're about to pull a mob with serious melee damage, wait for the armor debuff to drop before pulling.
- Feral Faerie Fire for the pull. Reapply on cooldown. FFF bears the distinction of being a completely free skill with a huge threat modifier, and you should use it as much as possible.
- Get Mangle up. The first Mangle should ideally be timed to coincide with a Maul (which follows your normal swing timer), and both hitting together should give you a nice threat lead as your DPS are starting up.
- If your DPS isn't likely to overtake you at this point, Demoralizing Roar. If they're riding you, focus on getting more threat on the boss now, and Demo Roar with a more comfortable threat lead later.
- Lacerate x 2 or 3 (depending on how long it takes Mangle to come off cooldown, i.e whether you have points in Improved Mangle or not).
- Mangle.
- Lacerate x 2 or 3. You should have a full 5-stack of Lacerate ticking on the boss, which you should try not to let drop.
- Mangle.
- If Lacerate x 5 is on the boss and FFF and Mangle are both on cooldown, Swipe. Even though it's our go-to AoE threat skill, it's still a great filler ability for single targets.
- Reapply Demoralizing Roar as necessary.
- For this entire series, keep queueing Maul as much as your rage generation allows (so, realistically your "rotation" looks more Mangle/Maul, Demoralizing Roar/Maul, Lacerate/Maul, FFF/Maul, etc.). Maul modifies your auto-attacks, so it's possible to keep it going the length of the fight while using other skills (provided you have the rage for it). If you're not fond of having to spam it manually, Kalon from ThinkTank wrote on article on the different ways to macro it to your rotation that is extremely helpful.
For AoE pulls, under ideal circumstances you would keep to the single-target rotation as much as possible, omitting the full Lacerate stack on one mob in favor of Swipe spam to glue everything in the pull to you. In practice, DPS has an unfortunate tendency to AoE as soon as they possible can. If you spend the majority of your time on one mob, you're likely to get others peeled off you if your DPS is well-geared. As such, your AoE threat "rotation" looks an awful lot like this:
- Swipe.
- Maul.
- More Swipe.
- More Maul. Tab-target around the pull to make sure that Maul (it is glyphed, right?) is being applied evenly to everything. If you have Infected Wounds, and you almost certainly should, an easy way to make sure Maul's making its way around the pull is to check for the IW debuff.
- If you have a decent-to-tolerable threat lead on all of the mobs, use global cooldowns to spread FFF, Mangle, and Lacerate around as much as possible. Lacerate is particularly useful as it will increase damage done by Maul.
- If DPS looks like it's going to overtake your threat on a mob, spend a few GCDs on it to get more single-target threat applied.
When you start out tanking, it's generally wise to be honest about it with your DPS, and mark at least a skull on trash pulls.
10. Gems
As a general rule, plan on gemming solely agility and stamina (although, as with just about all the advice we can give concerning bears, Rawr is always going to be your friend here). The only time you should worry about gemming anything other than agility or stamina would be if you were absolutely desperate for hit or expertise, and even then you're almost always better off switching in more threat-oriented pieces than gemming to make up for their absence.
- Meta: Austere Earthsiege Diamond.
- Red sockets: Delicate Cardinal Ruby or Shifting Dreadstone.
- Blue sockets: Shifting Dreadstone or Solid Majestic Zircon.
- Other sockets: There's really nothing great for bears in yellow, orange, or green gems, so you should continue gemming agility/stamina in these sockets.
- Should I gem for the socket bonus?: If it gives you an agility or stamina bonus and it's convenient, go for it. If not, don't bother.
11. Glyphs
There aren't too many glyphs that bears really care about, and most of the time you won't be using anything other than the following three:
- Glyph of Maul: This should be considered mandatory for 5-man tanking, or any raid situation where you have to hold threat on multiple mobs. Right now, the only fight where you wouldn't necessarily want this is Deathbringer Saurfang (as Maul can accidentally hit and aggro a Blood Beast).
- Glyph of Frenzied Regeneration: This turns Frenzied Regeneration into an even better mini-cooldown.
- Glyph of Survival Instincts: This improves one of the bear's few "Oh s&%t!" buttons. Mandatory.
Minor glyphs that have a direct impact on bear tanking include Glyph of Challenging Roar and Glyph of Thorns. Otherwise, glyph whatever you find most convenient. Common picks include Glyph of Dash and Glyph of Unburdened Rebirth.
12. Endgame enchants:
- Helm: Arcanum of the Stalwart Protector (Argent Crusade quartermaster)
- Shoulders: Greater Inscription of the Pinnacle is the classic choice, but if you're not hurting for avoidance, you can use Greater Inscription of the Axe for some extra threat generation. Both can be found at the Sons of Hodir quartermaster. If you want more health, you can use Greater Inscription of the Gladiator (available for 10,000 honor at each faction's respective Accessories quartermaster).
- Cloak: Enchant Cloak - Major Agility, or the Engineering equivalent.
- Chest: Enchant Chest - Powerful Stats.
- Bracers: Enchant Bracers - Major Stamina, or the Leatherworking equivalent.
- Gloves: Enchant Gloves - Major Agility or Reticulated Armor Webbing for an Engineer.
- Belt: Eternal Belt Buckle.
- Legs: Frosthide Leg Armor.
- Boots: Tuskarr's Vitality is the most popular choice, as the run speed is incredibly useful for a tank. If you're hurting for avoidance, you might prefer Enchant Boots - Superior Agility.
- Weapon: Mongoose.
Every week, Shifting Perspectives treks across Azeroth in pursuit of truth, beauty, and insight concerning the druid class. Sometimes it finds the latter, or something good enough for government work. Whether you're a Bear, Cat, Moonkin, Tree, or stuck in caster form, we've got the skinny on druid changes in patch 3.3, a look at the disappearance of the bear tank, and thoughts on why you should be playing the class (or why not).

*starts rolling on polearms when playing paladin tank*
Forcepath Feb 17th 2010 11:23AM
*stabbity death!!!*
No, really, it's so frustrating having to roll against DK's, Hunters, Pallies, and Warriors for tank weapons in 25-man pugs.
I had to pay some stupid paladin 2000g for my Hellion Glaive....and it's not even that great of a tanking weapon :(
Blurgarian Feb 17th 2010 1:13PM
Yeah, but DKs should be using a 2h tanking weapon anyway, so, don't rag on us for rolling on 2h tanking polearms.
Guaritorre Feb 17th 2010 11:14AM
you should mention using frenzied regn after popping survival instancts to increase your total heal thus frenzied regen will heal you for more hps. another reason why that Survival instincts glyph is a must have
Forcepath Feb 17th 2010 11:21AM
Awesome! Bears are so ftw.
I just wanted to note Allison that you should add in the engineering helm enchant (+45 stam and MC) for Bears. I use it over the Argent Crusade since effective health still trumps defense anyday.
As well, since Maul is such an integral part of our rotation, may I suggest some macros? It's much easier for a bear to not lose their left hand by doing something like this for each ability:
Feral Faerie Fire:
#showtooltip
/cast Faerie Fire (Feral)
/cast !Maul
Mangle:
#showtooltip
/cast Mangle (Bear)(Rank 5)
/cast !Maul
Lacerate:
#showtooltip
/cast Lacerate
/cast !Maul
Swipe:
#showtooltip
/cast Swipe (bear)(Rank 8)
/cast !Maul
Trust me, your fingers will love you for it. (I don't remember where I originally found these macros but they have been a godsend for me learning how to play bear more effectively.

I generally us my mouse wheel for this, move wheel down = Maul.
This allows me to only use it when my rage allows, generally I only tank 5-mans and the odd 10/25 man (VoA, Onyexia, Some ToC).
Actually I do the same with my warrior and DK (may macro in Runestrike more for DK)
Astemus Feb 17th 2010 2:38PM
If you would trade 8 stamina for 20 defense rating, you have a bit to learn about being a real tank.
Also, i believe she linked to one of the best articles around for macro'ing maul. Truly a must read.
Astemus Feb 17th 2010 2:43PM
As a side note, the MC on the engineering helm is fun for a laugh the first time, and after that it's pretty useless. You gain no control over the person, and you can't even drag them with you over a cliff. The duration is only 5-10 seconds, making it also pretty inept at CC unless you are really into pvp, and cyclone is generally superior.

Paladins don't suck! :( If it wasn't for the paladin hate, I would enjoy your columns a lot more. I have both a paladin and a druid, and I enjoy playing both of them very much.
Pallies suck Feb 17th 2010 11:34AM
Pallies do suck. They are the easiest class to do everything with and have the highest ratio of scrubs to decency out of any class there is.
Pallies are awful because they are so innately easy to play that every spoiled 10 year old who played Final Fantasy wants to be the "HOLY WARRIOR" and likes to press the same 2 keys while tanking, and the same 4 keys while healing or dpsing over and over that it's hilarious.
I once knew a Holy Pally who thought he ruled and was some great player in Naxx because of "LOOK AT TEH METERS" syndrome. So I told him to finish leveling his priest and heal as holy.
He quit WoW shortly afterward because all his skill left with his pally.
DIAF Palatards.
CrimsonEyedDeath Feb 17th 2010 12:38PM
Press the same two keys while tanking? You, sir, know nothing about paladin tanking.

Paladins don't suck, please champion those who are decent Paladins!
There are many of out there, who wield the light correctly and to appose those who mock our class!
Retardin Feb 17th 2010 1:58PM
Pallies do suck and they are two button tanks.
L2 6969 Macro noobs.
Kittaw Feb 17th 2010 8:51PM
I do agree, Paladins do not suck. They are extremely competant at what they do, be it tanking, DPS or healing. They are overall a very strong class. I imagine when Allison says "Paladins suck", it is not because the class is bad, but overall of the ease it is to play a Paladin. I, as a warrior tank, have come to notice that Paladins can generate the same threat and more DPS overall in Protection than I can with less effort. This is why -I- don't like Paladins. :P
aisenfaire Feb 18th 2010 1:55AM
It was a joke. J-O-K-E.
You all need to calm down with your indignant and heated defense of paladins.
Also, the "paladins suck" line was probably meant more as "I hate PVPing against paladins" or "paladins annoy me" rather than "paladins are a bad class".
Allison Robert Feb 18th 2010 7:03PM
Heh. The first part of Cat 101 last week will explain the Machiavellian reasoning behind "Paladins suck." :)
MRAWR Feb 17th 2010 11:29AM
OK,
Why does no suggested bear builds take Brutal Impact? It gives you a viable 30 second interrupt....it should ABSOLUTELY be mandatory. Especially with the morons in PUGs who refuse to sacrifice any DPS to help keep the tank alive. And by PUGs I mean raids.
3/3 Infected Wounds for tanking is totally unnecessary. The reason Barkskin is only a 20% shield wall is because it's on a 1 minute CD.
Let me use General Vezax as an example:
Before IBF was nerfed to a 2 minute CD from a 1 minute, DK's were preferred. Bear tanks quickly became the best tank for this. The one minute CD on Barkskin is still incredible, even if it's a lower damage reduction than other tanks' shield walls.
Additionally Bear's have what effectively amount to two last stands. A glyphed Frenzied Regen increases all the healing you receive by 15%.
Survival Instincts is your standard last stand.
Lastly, and this absolutely needs mentioned to everybody:
You need to create macros with Maul attached to everything:
/cast Mangle
/cast Maul
/cast Lacerate
/cast Maul
/cast Swipe
/cast Maul
/cast Bash
/cast Maul
Otherwise you will end up with Carpal Tunnel quickly.
People gearing up end-game bears will find how brutal it is to find Leather without ArP on it and with Expertise on it. You basically are shooting for the same exact gear as an Assassination Rogue. Meaning yes, your competition on loot is VERY stiff.
Also, since you are generally wearing rogue gear, you will have to socket every socket with +30 stamina gems.
You don't see many bear tanks around anymore, which is unfortunate because since Arms Warriors are hanging to raid-viability by a thread, and 95% of raiding warriors are fury you end up having your feral kitties having to mangle, and that hurts their DPS alot.
If a bear is tanking, and you have 4-piece T10 cats, they, combat rogues who rupture, and Deep Wounds warriors will love you long time :D.
Lastly, and perhaps most importantly:
Bears get whacked. Hard. Harder than every other tank. But it's consistently hard with little dips when Barkskin is up (on a line graph). There's no big surges like on Warriors who have Shield Block on CD. It's just getting slammed hard consistently.
Bear's have tons of dodge and crit which helps keep the incoming damage consistent.
Also, due to this, bears are perhaps the best tank for Icecrown. Their "shield" (Savage Defense) has no CD and is generally permanently up, eating about 2-4K (depending on AP) off each blow received (physical only). Their dodge is so insanely high, that they also are affected perhaps the least by Icewell radiance.
The biggest downside for bear's is an extreme vulnerability to magic. Your only real cooldown is Barkskin for reducing this damage at all.
Ezence Feb 19th 2010 6:21AM
I'm glad you mentioned these details :]
btw, "Druids face more competition for gear than any other tank." - The other tanks compete against each other for gear.... I think its safe to say the other tanks face more competition for gear.
Marpita Feb 17th 2010 1:57PM
Infected wounds doesn't stack with Thunderclap.
The reason so many tanks fail is because you fools vote down good information on here.
It's a bad talent. Every raid should have a Prot warrior tank to Sunder, which means Thunderclap stays up.
If the OT is a bear, then a talent-point-starved tank class wasted 3 points.
Interrupting a spell that will wreck your face once is more damage mitigation than infected wounds.
Brutal Impact is an outstanding talent because otherwise your interrupt has an extremely long CD.
Additionally, Demoralizing Roar is also pretty bad considering it is always worse than Demo Shout.
High utility build below:
http://www.wowhead.com/?talent#0ZxGGscrdceRczzAkbGczb:MzncMV
Single target boss fights would swap the glyph of Maul for the glyph of Frenzied Regen to further bolster another CD. Or you can even replace the SI one with Frenzied Regen to give you that second last stand in conjunction with a trinket like Ick's Rotting Thumb.
If for some God-forsaken reason you have no warriors with you then drop points out of Imp Mangle or even Imp. LotP (which is mostly overhealing anyway). Then talent out Infected Wounds.
For heroics, that build is perfect.
There's wiggle room there, too, to eek out some more survivability via Infected Wounds.
I would never talent out Feral Aggression, though. That screams cat talent, not bear. Most of the time we bring a hunter with a bird. Demo-screech is pretty awesome.
