Frost Lotus drop rate increased

The drop rate of Frost Lotus, from herbs in Northrend, has been increased by 50%.This will be a welcome change for many because with the increase in demand for raiding flasks that patch 3.3 brought, the supply of Frost Lotus on many servers has gotten quite low, which increased prices significantly. This change will go live on servers as they restart, so probably next Tuesday for most.
The new drop rate should have an fairly quick effect on the number of Frost Lotuses listed on your auction house, however it always takes a few days of lower sales volumes before the big farmers start to drop their prices and undercut each other.
My advice? Don't buy any Frost Lotus (or derivative flasks) unless you will use them the same day. Wait until the prices go down before stocking up! Also, if you are a herbalist, you can make a quick profit by spending some time farming now, and try to make some sales before the prices drop.

Well it's about damn time. Now I have actually make Flasks for my Raids instead of spending 50g Per Lotus and going broke before I can make 8 Flasks.

Now the question is if it's an additive or multiplicative increase. Looking on Wowhead, it has a 6% chance of being gathered from herbs. If it is additive, then we're looking at 56%. If it is multiplicative, then we're looking at 9%.
Kal Feb 18th 2010 2:14PM
From the wording, I'm guessing it's multiplicative. I don't see blizzard suddenly increasing the drop rate of an item by that large of an amount in one go. Most likely it'll be upped to 9%, and then if it seems like they're still having problem with drops, maybe another increase, so that there isn't a sudden flood on the market place.
Astemus Feb 18th 2010 2:14PM
"by 50%"
So it is multiplicative. 5% drop rate right now, so 7.5% after the change.
jealouspirate Feb 18th 2010 2:19PM
Astemus is correct. The word 'by' indicates that it is a multiplicative increase. If it was additive they would have said 'to 50%'

...Oh, that's totally different. I was wondering why the heck they'd bring them up that high- I figured people would be swimming in them if they dropped off of every other herb node.
ZMES_Matt Feb 18th 2010 2:37PM
Yeah, I didn't really think about it like that, but like other people are saying, it probably is multiplitive. Still, at a 6% you would get a Frost Lotus at an average of 1 out of every 17 nodes, where as at 9% you'll get one out of every 11 nodes; might not sound like a huge increase, but considering how many nodes people go through in the hour I expect to see prices drop by quite a bit, especially since more Frost Lotus means more chances for Elixir Specialist Alchemists to proc.
I still welcome the change, just means less work I have to do every week for the guild.
Squirr3llywrath9 Feb 18th 2010 2:07PM
It's about freakin' time. Paying 75g for a frost lotus was getting old.
Heilig Feb 18th 2010 6:06PM
Speaking as a dedicated Herbalist, No, it most definitely was not.

Awww man, I was gonna buy another chopper. I guess my last alt will have to go chopperless now :(
galestrom Feb 18th 2010 2:07PM
So sweet. I was really growing tired of depleting my gold reserves ahead of every raid.
What can I say? I'm a paycheck to paycheck player.
Thanks Blizz! :)
ZMES_Matt Feb 18th 2010 2:07PM
Well, there goes my biggest way of making money... /le sigh
Oh well, I guess 20k in pocket and 3 alts with dual-spec and epic flying is enough at this point anways. :P
It almost felt like cheating using the Ulduar Lockout to pick all of Freya's room with a rogue, but I got to single-handedly supply my guild with flasks too, which was fun. At least I get to relax and do a whole less farming now... until Cata hits anyways. :)
Ben Feb 18th 2010 3:32PM
aww you herbalists and ur pocket change. thats so cute.
fyi ur downrated for contributing nothing and obviously trying to brag, in case u were wondering.
ZMES_Matt Feb 18th 2010 3:44PM
That's fine with me, just pointing out how horribly inflated the prices on FL were and how they were getting exploited the way they were. Like I said, I welcome the change just so I can do less farming for the guild every week.
By the way, if you have a better suggestion at how to make money with little time invested, I'd really like to hear it. Not being sarcastic, really, if there's something even better please fill us in on it, I'd like to jump on that boat...unless you were just making things up so you would sound like you had a clue...
By the way, congratulations on being a troll and doing exactly what you were just accusing me of, since I at least had a point as I explained in the first paragraph.
Elmo Feb 18th 2010 2:14PM
Woot, I sold a stack of 10 Lotus today :D
Beelzebud Feb 18th 2010 2:21PM
Good! I used to buy my flasks, but when 1 flask started costing 60g, I went back to farming them myself. People selling them at such an inflated rate shot themselves on the foot with this.
zurkka Feb 18th 2010 2:27PM
ok, some people will start to cry that ths is going to ruin how they make gold and blah blah
but they dont think that they are going to sell more itens and cash in almost the same in the end of the day, and maybe more, i think this is a good change (since i spend a lot in flasks =p)
Quidamtyra Feb 18th 2010 2:27PM
With the prices of Frost Lotus being 70+ gold the last couple of weeks, I went and farmed for about 30 minutes last night. I got 12 frost lotus... 18 woulda been even better!
Can't wait until I can be lazy on my main and not feel obligated to farm on my alt =D
Butts Feb 18th 2010 2:28PM
I don't know about you, but my brain receives a little shot of endorphins every time I see that random colorful special herb with green text. Hopefully that still happens after this change. It certainly doesn't as much with titanium now that the transmute has no cd...
