StarCraft II beta is live. Beware of scams!
People are getting actual StarCraft II beta invites, but that doesn't mean that all beta invites (or any other emails that look like they are from Blizzard) are real. If you got an email saying that you have been invited to StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty, don't click anything in that email. Instead take the following steps:
Account thieves are sending out phishing emails all the time -- we get several tips a day. And with SC2 beta actually beginning, the Cataclysm beta scams are sure to increase. So you need to be careful of any official looking email you receive. Always navigate to the site yourself to check things out and remember that Blizzard will never ask for your account information in an email.
If you do determine that an email claiming to be from Blizzard is not legit, forward it to hacks@blizzard.com. Blizzard has more about identifying phishing emails at this link.
Please remember that account safety and computer security is your responsibility! While WoW.com has provided you with resources to additional information, do your homework and make sure you know what you're doing before installing any antivirus or other software. And if your account does get stolen, please see our guide on what to do next.
- Type battle.net into your browser (no typos) and it will go to the secure battle.net site appropriate to your region.
- Enter your account info.
- Under Manage My Games, choose Add or Upgrade a Game.
- Enter the Beta Key provided in the email where it says Enter Game Key.
- Press Add Game.

If I get in the next time I log into Azeroth we'll probably have playable murlocs, everyone will be complaining about how OP Arch Druids and Spriests are and trade will be full of people asking for a 26000gs for regular dungeons.
Drakkenfyre Feb 18th 2010 3:08PM
Not to pick man, but it's "our" and "their".
You keep using "are".
Docp Feb 18th 2010 2:08PM
I'm reasonably sure I used 'are' right there.
and whilst I sometimes confuse there and their, I didn't even use it in that sentence.
I will admit that joke wasn't nearly as funny written as it was in my head (I'm a freaking laugh riot in my head) and deserved to be downrated into oblivion.
Vladeon Feb 18th 2010 2:19PM
I'm willing to bet that he was trying to respond to DeOBrien7 below since DeOBrien7 used "there" for "their" extensively while also somehow confusing "are" for "our."
Drakkenfyre Feb 18th 2010 3:09PM
Yup, I clicked reply on the previous guy, and it put it below your's.
He was using "are".
DeOBrien7 Feb 18th 2010 1:08PM
I got in =D You dont need to enter any codes (Acctually there isn't any). Just log on to your Blizzard Account and you should see the SC 2 Beta in your "Manage My Games"
Robin Torres Feb 18th 2010 1:23PM
Some people definitely do get keys in their email to enter as described in the post. Interesting though that some are already entered.
DeOBrien7 Feb 18th 2010 1:29PM
My guess is maybe people with Keys are the ones that got them at Blizzcon?
Saltypoison Feb 18th 2010 1:32PM
I was sent a key to sign up. It appears that if you did the opt-in through battle.net, you won't get a key, since it was already linked to your battle.net account. However, if you had a Blizzcon 2008 beta key (as I did), all they had on record was the email address you submitted when you entered the key. Since it was linked with an email address, and not a battle.net account, that required Blizzard to email you a key rather than just directly upgrading your battle.net account.
At least that's my theory. :P

@DeOBrien7: You are incorrect, Robin is 100% correct. You *do* need a code that you received in your Beta invite for Starcraft 2. Here, in fact, is the specific process Blizzard puts in the email (which I and my wife received, having gone to Blizzcon '08):
1. Apply Your Beta Key - Log in to your Battle.net account. Under "Manage My Games," click "Add or Upgrade a Game." Enter the above beta key in the "Enter Game Key" field and select "Add Game."
2. Get the Installer - In your list of games, click the “Manage Game” button under the StarCraft II beta image to download the installer.
3. Install the StarCraft II Beta - Once you’ve downloaded the installer, run it and follow the directions to install the StarCraft II beta client on your machine. Note that your participation in the StarCraft II beta test is governed by a Beta Test Agreement that you are required to accept before you can install the beta client.
4. Run the Game & Log in to Battle.net - After the StarCraft II beta installs, the launcher interface should automatically appear on your screen. Log in with your Battle.net account and you’ll be able to begin playing. You can launch the client at any time by clicking the desktop shortcut or by going to the Windows® Start Menu.
DeOBrien7 Feb 18th 2010 1:39PM
Actually Tom we are both correct =D it seems the ones that got there key from Blizzcon were emailed there codes. However the ones who Opted in using there Battle.Net Account got the Beta Automatically added into there "Manage My Game" List.
The Email I received.
1. Get the Installer - Log in to your Battle.net account. In your list of games, click the “Manage Game” button under the StarCraft II beta image to download the installer.
2. Install the StarCraft II Beta - Once you’ve downloaded the installer, run it and follow the directions to install the beta client on your machine. Note that your participation in the StarCraft II beta test is governed by a Beta Test Agreement that you are required to accept before you can install the beta client.
3. Run the Game & Log in to Battle.net - After the game installs, the launcher interface should automatically appear on your screen. Log in with your Battle.net account and you’ll be able to begin playing. You can launch the client at any time by clicking the desktop shortcut or by going to the Windows® Start Menu.
So it just depends on which way you received your invite.
DeOBrien7 Feb 18th 2010 1:47PM
Are Assumptions were correct
Blizzcon - Beta Key
Opt-In - No Key

I really hate that there is no Edit Button =(

Is this beta just in the US currently or is it worldwide (or more importantly, in Britain)?
daan.leijen Feb 18th 2010 1:25PM
I've heard of people on a dutch gaming site who have a beta invite, so unless they have an american battle.net account, it's international.
Thix Feb 18th 2010 1:51PM
Worldwide, got an invite on Eu-battle.net account
Ominous Feb 18th 2010 6:58PM
Ditto the last comment. I am in London and play on an EU server. I got my beta details yesterday. With all of the spam e-mails, I didn't do anything about it - until I saw the post that we are all replying to. It seemed sensible, so I followed the directions) and down came the installer. I'll get around to doing something about that, when tonight's WoW is over. I don't know for how long the keys will be given out, but cross your fingers. You aren't out of the area(s) that can receive them.
Rithgor Feb 18th 2010 5:53PM
woot I got the beta, and it does not give you a cd key, you log into battle.net, and sc2 beta will be a game on your list, hit manage game, and you get option to download client. no where in email does it mention a cd key, or even needing one.
Sky Feb 18th 2010 1:21PM
Do I need a beta key or just a battle.net account?
Robin Torres Feb 18th 2010 1:24PM
You need both to get into the beta.
DeOBrien7 Feb 18th 2010 1:28PM
You just need a Battle.Net Account if you Opted in for the Beta and were selected the game will automatically be added to your "Manage My Games"
