Upcoming battleground and honor changes

- Marks of Honor are going away.
- Holiday weekends will now be denoted as "Call to Arms" and award tiered system of honor for participation. The tier is based on you winning or losing the battleground, and if you've won or lost before.
- Honor kills reward 100% more honor, Wintergrasp weekly quests give 50% less honor, and XP rewarded from honor kills are reduced by 50%.
- Implementation of the Random Battleground Finder -- much like the current Random Dungeon Finder. There are further honor rewards, which are similar to the ones provided by the Call to Arms.
The full statement after the break.
From Zarhym:
We have several changes planned for Battlegrounds in the next minor content patch and would like to share them with you now. This patch will be available for public testing and we encourage you to participate, queue up and provide some feedback on these changes.
- Firstly, say goodbye to Battleground Marks of Honor. We feel this currency system is a bit outdated and are getting rid of it. Any items which require these marks as currency will have their costs adjusted appropriately to remove this requirement. The quest NPCs will still be available to award players Honor for turning in leftover marks, but this is only to help players clear this expired currency.
- Next, the Battleground holiday weekend will now be denoted as "Call to Arms" in the Battleground tab and Calendar. If you prefer a specific Battleground over all others, look for those words next to its name to determine whether or not you'll receive bonus Honor. The bonus awards for Call to Arms Battlegrounds have been adjusted.
- Winning a Call to Arms Battleground for the first time in a day will award players with 30 Honorable Kills worth of additional Honor currency.
- Additional Call to Arms Battleground victories after the first win for a player that day will award them with 15 Honorable Kills worth of additional Honor currency.
- Losing a Call to Arms Battleground will award players with 5 Honorable Kills worth of additional Honor currency.
- To bring the rate at which players obtain PvP rewards with Honor more in-line with the rate at which players obtain PvE rewards via the Dungeon Finder, we'll also be increasing the amount of Honor awarded for an Honorable Kill by 100%. In light of this, the amount of experience provided from an Honorable Kill, and the amount of Honor awarded for completing the Wintergrasp weekly quests, have been reduced by 50%.
It's important to note one thing about these 50% decreases. All Honor awarded for completing objectives in Battlegrounds and Wintergrasp is actually based on an Honorable Kill conversion rate. So if you destroy a tower in Alterac Valley for example, the Honor you're awarded is actually based on a flat number of Honorable Kills. Since Honorable Kills will now award 100% more Honor, completing such objectives will also award more Honor. This is why experience gains based on completing Battleground objectives and Honor awarded from the Wintergrasp quests are being decreased by 50%. - Now that we hopefully have your attention, we're pleased to announce the implementation of the Random Battleground system! This system will work virtually the same as the Random Dungeon option in the Dungeon Finder. Players can queue with a group of up to five players for a Random Battleground in the Battleground tab. As with the Random Dungeon option, the Battleground chosen will not be revealed until players zone into the Battleground for which they are selected. The bonus rewards for this system are identical to the updated Call to Arms bonuses.
- Winning a Battleground using the Random Battleground option for the first time in a day will award players with 30 Honorable Kills worth of additional Honor currency.
- Winning additional Battlegrounds using the Random Battleground option after the first random win will award players with 15 Honorable Kills worth of additional Honor currency.
- Losing a Battleground using the Random Battleground option will award players with 5 Honorable Kills worth of additional Honor currency.
- When using the Random Battleground option, players will not receive additional rewards if the Battleground chosen is under the effects of the Call to Arms bonuses. In other words, the bonuses do not stack. In addition, if a player has been rewarded 30 Honorable Kills worth of bonus Honor currency from either the Random Battleground system, or the Call to Arms Battleground, he or she will be rewarded 15 Honorable Kills worth of bonus Honor currency that day for each additional victory. This applies whether the Random Battleground system is used, or the Call to Arms Battleground is chosen specifically, as a player cannot be rewarded the full amount of bonus Honor more than once per day.

"Players can queue with a group of up to five players for a Random Battleground in the Battleground tab."
I... don't know about this. I mean, I get that grouping up with 5 players at a time will allow for a faster accumulation of players than trying to get together all 15 or 40 combatants at once.
But what bothers me is that, if they're using the same system as the 5-man dungeon finder, we'll be running into class-type issues:
- PvE content necessitates that each 5-man NEEDS one tank, one healer, and three DPS.
- PvP, especially battlegrounds, seems to constantly refute the conventional need for a set number of healers, tanks or dps. We're fighting other players, not predictable dungeon bosses!
I'm sure that Blizzard already has this worked out and is creating a new system to incorporate this into the Random Battleground, but I'm worried that we're going to be looking at a more homogenized battlefield instead of a purely random PvP experience. I don't know whether or not PvP needs interference in this regard.

WOW! I'm really thrill about this change, and very happy about all this new RBF. Now, if Blizz just could enable earn reputation with the other PvP factions ones you are cap exalted with one of them... it would be a bless from heaven, just like in the RDF.

I don't know. I think I'd prefer that the battlegroup finder balance classes/roles out a bit. Not that there needs to be a healer and tank spec for every 3 dps, but I hope it balances the number of healers between the two factions each game. I.e. if horde has 4 healers in a EoTs, the dungeon finder will (hopefully) "try" to get 3-4 healers for alliance. It is frustrating to get into a bg where one team has plenty of heals and the other has none.
Also, ever since the hidden "skill rating" was implemented for arena, I've been dying for something similar for bgs. It would naturally be harder to program since there are a lot more variables in a bg, but I wish the constant afker's for example would find themselves bumped down enough until they end up in a bg of nothing but afkers on both sides =P And those who cap flags, defend nodes, assist flag carriers, etc should ideally get placed with others who do the same rather than people who attack everything they see haphazardly and never accomplish anything for their team.
Oh, and one more thing for my wishlist: Bolsters for lowbies! In Warhammer for example (which gets so much wrong, but a few things very very right) players in a bg (they call it scenario) automatically get their level bolstered to the highest possible level for that bracket. For example, a level 10 in the 10-19 wsg bracket would get bolstered to 19 for the duration of the game. What that means specifically is that they'd get a sizeable boost to their stats and their hit chance would be calculated as if they were level 19. The real 19s would still have a large advantage due to more abilities, more talents, etc, but it would mean that lowbies of any given level bracket would no longer feel totally worthless in bgs.

Me likey.

Also, bring back battleground pots! This means we're going to cap honor even quicker, and we need stuff to spend it on.

Pretty sweeping changes for a minor patch in my opinion. I'll see how it goes before I pass judgement.
Mr. Tastix Feb 18th 2010 9:55PM
I think it's mostly just a case that Blizzard are determined to keep 3.3 as the last official "major" content patch, and whilst minor content patches usually only add a few features (and not a sprawling amount such as this, or what we normally find in major content patches) technically, Blizzard can add as much features as they want and still call it a "minor" content patch.
It's just a naming convention, it really shouldn't alter mean that much and I fail to see why Blizzard, or anyone for that matter, feel the need to state there will or their won't be new major or minor content patches, it just seems rather silly to me.
Artificial Feb 20th 2010 5:12PM
It's not quite that arbitrary. What differentiates a major patch from a minor one is the addition of a new area, complete with new lore and a cinematic, e.g. Uldaman (3.1), Trial of the Champion (3.2), or Icecrown (3.3). It has nothing to do with things like a new dungeon finder, complete class overhaul, etc. It'll be 3.3.X for as long as there's no new major dungeon or such added, no matter what other overhauls or brand-new features are added. They could turn Death Knights into mounted warlocks and it'd still be a 3.3.X patch unless they also introduced a new dungeon, cinematic, and forward movement of the storyline...

Holy tits.
Too bad I left WoW until Cataclysm.

Never was much into PvP, but this does look very promising! Makes me wana grab my PvP gear again. I cant wait till this goes live!
jealouspirate Feb 18th 2010 2:42PM
Woah... I actually just recently got into PvP and have been saving marks for a pvp mount. I wonder how much they'll cost after this patch? Purchasable with Honor Points probably?
Cyno01 Feb 18th 2010 2:51PM
Yeah, im kind of intrigued by this. Despite being a rogue, i am terrible at pvp, and just dont have much fun at it. BUT i'm only a few mounts away from 100 and have sort of put off finishing because the only reasonable options are grinding the specific BGs between 10 and 30 times for each....
Hallo Feb 18th 2010 4:28PM
And the follow up question has to be... are they raising the Honor Cap?
relmatos Feb 18th 2010 3:15PM
I've been using my honor to buy gems and saving the marks for the mounts. damn it
