Frozen Orbs have been sort of a weird little problem since Patch 3.3 came out. Since they automatically drop off every heroic end boss, the dungeon finder has pretty much guaranteed that there's thousands of them created every single day. However, the
Emblems of Triumph that come out of those same dungeons pretty much make most of the profession gear made with Frozen Orbs obsolete.
As a result, many of us have at least a couple stacks rotting in our banks or backpacks, and I know I personally have started outright passing on them, having nothing better to do with them. Now I sort of wish I hadn't, if only because they're finally useful as currency in
Patch 3.3.3.
On the PTR, a gnome called
Frozo the Renowned will
trade other tradeskill items to you in exchange for the orb. The list of his wares is as follows:
- Various Eternals will cost you 1 Frozen Orb each.
- Runed Orbs cost 4 Frozen Orbs each.
- Crusader Orbs cost 6 Frozen Orbs each.
- Frozo is also currently selling Frost Lotus for 3 gold 20 silver apiece, although I'd wager that's a bug that will be fixed soon to show a Frozen Orb cost of some sort.
In short, the next time you're heroic dungeon running, you might actually want to look forward to that Frozen Orb drop again. It may just be useful come patch time.

I am definitely looking forward to this change, and by the looks of it so is everyone else on my server. Frozen Orbs have skyrocketed from 4-5g on my server to 70-100g on my server in the last few hours. Yikes! I am sure though once people realize that the orbs aren't buying expensive items in the first place the prices will go down again.
Hyacinthe Feb 20th 2010 3:07AM
Didn't Basil already post about this? Or is this just to talk about the bug with frost lotus being available for gold?
Basil Berntsen Feb 20th 2010 7:06AM
I edited the list into my post about the profession changes, but a separate post needed to be done about the sheer quantity of frost orbs out there.

Suddenly the 120 Frozen Orbs in our Guild Bank are looking like 240 flasks-to-be. :3

To you and everyone else. My buddies and I were just chatting the other day about how Herbalism/Alchemy was the only really profitable profession combo anymore and we were wondering what Blizzard was going to do to kill it the way they killed everything else.
Now I guess we know.
All professions are now officially worth 2 gem slots and no more.

Get used to rolling Need on Frozen Orbs everyone!
I know most in my battleground have been rolling Greed, but I'd be surprised if this doesn't change with this announcement.
Aceman67 Feb 20th 2010 3:35AM
I always wait till I'm the last one to roll on the Orb, just in case someone rolls need, so I roll need too (otherwise I greed).
But if people start needing this outright, well, I will too. As a 450 Miner/JC, I can make good use of them... especially with the removal of the CD on Titansteel.
Sarakin Feb 20th 2010 3:40AM
aww but i just got used to rolling greed way to change the rules again guys.
Puntable Feb 20th 2010 10:41AM
Need or Greed has nothing to do with the worth of the item. Just because an orb used to be worth 5g and now is worth 20g does not mean you need it. Do not try to use the argument "If everyone rolls need then nobody can ninja." That would mean you condone rolling need on every item for which you can roll need. You roll need if you are going to equip the item, and you roll greed if you are not. Don't try to break the system.
Korenn Feb 20th 2010 11:16AM
@Puntable Rolling need on orbs exactly removes all ninja-ing. Orbs are not gear, so equating them is bullshit. Everyone on my battlegroup needs, and that works fine.
Paul Mar 23rd 2010 10:28AM
The patch should make it an automatic Greed roll for everyone.
Wryxian
No, you won't be able to exchange Frozen Orbs for Emblems of Frost. Yeah it just takes one person to press Need after everyone's pressed Greed on the Frozen Orbs and you miss out. But the good news is that in patch 3.3.3 this won't be the case anymore -- the roll for Frozen Orbs will be an automatic Greed roll. Rejoice!
Paul Mar 24th 2010 11:28AM
Maybe not. I was in one last night and although I did not hit need it still looked like the option was still there.
Immortalsoul Feb 20th 2010 1:02PM
Oh God...Blizzard promoting ninjas?

Better than pirates.
Ashleigh Feb 21st 2010 2:51AM
See, this is why Pirates are better guys, no one ever comes on here complaining that a pirate stole their loot.
jbodar Feb 21st 2010 7:24PM
@Ashleigh
That is because pirates don't leave anyone alive to QQ on forums. No quarter asked; none given.
tgcam Feb 26th 2010 5:15AM
@jbodar
actually that still kinda makes pirates better :D
