Frozen Orbs have been sort of a weird little problem since Patch 3.3 came out. Since they automatically drop off every heroic end boss, the dungeon finder has pretty much guaranteed that there's thousands of them created every single day. However, the
Emblems of Triumph that come out of those same dungeons pretty much make most of the profession gear made with Frozen Orbs obsolete.
As a result, many of us have at least a couple stacks rotting in our banks or backpacks, and I know I personally have started outright passing on them, having nothing better to do with them. Now I sort of wish I hadn't, if only because they're finally useful as currency in
Patch 3.3.3.
On the PTR, a gnome called
Frozo the Renowned will
trade other tradeskill items to you in exchange for the orb. The list of his wares is as follows:
- Various Eternals will cost you 1 Frozen Orb each.
- Runed Orbs cost 4 Frozen Orbs each.
- Crusader Orbs cost 6 Frozen Orbs each.
- Frozo is also currently selling Frost Lotus for 3 gold 20 silver apiece, although I'd wager that's a bug that will be fixed soon to show a Frozen Orb cost of some sort.
In short, the next time you're heroic dungeon running, you might actually want to look forward to that Frozen Orb drop again. It may just be useful come patch time.

This is cool news and sorta bad news as a LW i've gotten used to Frozen Orbs but it will be nice to have more use for them then just semi-lower level crafting.
@Prophetik
I'd hope and expect esppicaly from PTR testing that in particluar with randoms the need roll will be disabled it would make more sense to me esppcialy for randoms. but thats me.

Maybe it's like the old vendors that have a special item pop up every now and then that is just for gold.
Cyanea Feb 20th 2010 3:43AM
The second I saw the 3.3.3 notes earlier, I went and snapped up all the 5-10g auctions for Orbs. I'm sitting on 76 right now. Gonna stock up on Frost Lotus and either sell it or flask it.

I just want to thank the WoW.com staff for their dedication in bringing the latest news, no matter what time it is! I'm still checking this site every 15 minutes to see if there's another update xp
Donaghy Feb 20th 2010 3:59AM
I sure hope that frost lotuses are only going to be 1 Frozen orb.
Orlan Feb 20th 2010 8:14PM
It seems 3g 20s is discount price from 4g that was meaned to be 4 Frozen Orbs.
Thunderblade Feb 20th 2010 4:00AM
And think that i've actually vendored 20 of these, say, a couple hours before reading this...
I'm sad now. :(
Butabako Feb 20th 2010 7:20PM
I think I bought yours!
The second I heard that there was going to be a vendor to trade in FOs for other mats, before I even knew what exactly I was going to be able to buy with them, I set up a snatch for them in Auctioneer at 20g. And I don't think I'm going to be changing that.
JKWood Feb 20th 2010 12:51PM
Read more carefully - he said he vendored them. As in, sold them to a vendor. As in, took them out of the economy completely.
Gerik Feb 20th 2010 4:38AM
This has been one of those extremely rare occasions where a change in the game's economy was obvious and it was easy to make a killing if you reacted fast enough. Frozen Orbs were selling for barely more than their vendor value already, so people who jumped on this didn't even take a risk.

An interesting idea indeed, of course, only simple stuff to purchase, but the availablity of frost lotuses for the price of a Frozen Orb? I can see many raiding guilds (and opportunistic freelance alchemists) buying Orbs in bulk, especially if their piece rate is lower than the piece rate of raw Lotuses.
However, I can see many WoW Forum threads about "Frozen Orb Ninjas" and how "This system ruined my economy" etc.
But changes like this are damned if you do, damned if you don't. But I think it's a good change.
Noselacri Feb 20th 2010 7:23AM
I kinda wish I didn't drop 130 frozen orbs into the guild bank...
gonna be awkward getting them back
PeeWee Feb 20th 2010 10:48AM
Ah, the advantages of having a GB of my own on an alt. Always having access to everything I collect.
BobChaos23 Feb 20th 2010 8:06AM
Perhaps Blizz should finally do the completely logical and obvious thing and make Frozen Orbs a "Greed Only" item....no one could take advantage, and people wouldnt have to be paranoid about how the roll goes.
Hoggersbud Feb 20th 2010 9:52AM
That would be the change that makes this most worthwhile. I support your idea completely.
Seraph Feb 20th 2010 11:06AM
Now people have a reason to ninja them.
alpha5099 Feb 20th 2010 11:34AM
There's also going to be a tailoring recipe apparently, for a Frosty Flying Carpet. New tailoring mount? Yes please!
Frank Feb 20th 2010 1:52PM
OH MY YES. DO WANT!
Fletcher Feb 20th 2010 12:08PM
This begs the question; what the hell is Frozo the Reknowned *doing* with all these frozen orbs, that he's willing to trade stuff for them? Does he have some kind of frozen orb fetish? Does he make them into magical drugs? Is he Toravon's supplier? Who knows?
Narayana Feb 21st 2010 5:01PM
He's the one selling them to Toravon... Jerk.
