Insider Trader: Patch 3.3.3 changes for professionals

The most startling change for professions in patch 3.3.3 is probably the new NPC. Frozo the Reknowned takes your Frozen Orbs and turns them into more useful materials. (There was a time I thought I'd never get enough Orbs, but I guess times change.)
Let's take a look behind the jump and do a little more trade-based analysis of these patch 3.3.3 changes, and what it means to the future of professions in Wrath of the Lich King. While it seems that the changes will make a great deal more convenient in the new patch, it does seem like the auction house prices for items are likely to go down.
The two big items that leapt out at me about profession changes are the removals of the creation cooldowns associated with the Titansteel Bar, Moonshroud, Spellweave, and Ebonweave. Before now, it wasn't uncommon to see enterprising professionals selling the use of their cooldown as often as the created items themselves. Since you could only create so many of the items in a given week, people who needed the materials would have to find other crafters who could still smelt or create cloth.
The crafted items created using Titansteel and tailor-cloth are still fairly valid for bootstrapping new raiders up to the level of current content. I suspect that a strong motivation for this cooldown removal is to help encourage new players (or new alts?) to take a crack at killing the Lich King. And while I'll admit that it's a bummer to see a big moneymaker take stage left out of the auction house, I still applaud the idea that it might help new-to-raiding players get a crack at Icecrown.
Of course, this change will devalue the associated cooldown almost completely. Non-miners will still need to find someone who can actually perform the smelting of Titansteel, but the payment for that will probably be entirely on a tipping basis. Hopefully, we'll see a slight increase in the cost of the materials involved in creating Titansteel and the tailor-cloth. I think it'll mostly be a slight rise in the value of Titanium, since that's mostly priced on the effort it takes to go mine Titanium nodes in the first place.
Of course, on the complete opposite side of the spectrum, the Glacial Bag recipe will now have a seven day cooldown. This will serve two purposes that I can detect. First, it allows the developers to open up the personal, character gear available from tailoring when they've removed the cooldown from Moonshroud and Ebonweave, while still preserving the overall cost of Glacial Bags. The cooldown has been moved from raw materials to the final product.
The second thing the Glacial Bag cooldown will do is to help guide a few more folks to Haris Pilton. With it getting to be toward the end of the expansion, it's a pretty good time to drain a lot of the extra gold out of the economy. If Glacial Bags do get more expensive, then perhaps we'll see more people frequenting the Shattrath socialite to pick up their own Gigantique bag and Portable Hole. Sure, those bags are so ridiculously expensive, we won't expect many people to buy them en masse. But if Glacial Bags are more expensive and you want the associated achievement, then it might be enough to tip the scales in favor of Haris.
The big, big news, though, is the addition of Frozo the Renowned. This new vendor will take your Frozen Orbs and give you craft items in return. The items available will be the other crafting Orbs, Eternal elementals, and Frost Lotus. Crusader Orbs will cost you 6 Frozen Orbs, Runed Orbs will cost 4 Frozen Orbs. Everything else will run 1 Frozen Orb per Elemental.
The net effect of this, I think, will be a significant drop in the cost of Elemental Fire and its cousins on the auction house. I think everyone has had pleasant experiences rapidly collecting Frozen Orbs from the Dungeon Finder tool. However, we will likely see even more drama over whether you should Need or Greed the Frozen Orbs that drop in the Heroic. (I suggest always having everyone in the group roll Need on the Frozen Orb -- it'll save trouble in the long run.)
The new ability to purchase both Crusader and Runed Orbs means that you won't be forced to run raids to pick up these crafting items. Some of the gear created with them is still pretty good stuff for select classes. Doing a little research and knowing what items -- like the Breastplate of the White Knight -- are still considered "sexy" could let you turn your raw Frozen Orbs into some final profit.
Tailors get a nifty new pattern called the Frosty Flying Carpet. It's for tailors only, and the recipe will cost you six Frozen Orbs. I'm not sure what's going to separate the Frosty Flying Carpet from the more mundane Magnificent Flying Carpet, but we'll probably get more details soon.
Ultimately, for professions, I think this patch is about accessibility. This late in the expansion, there's no reason to restrict the relatively low-level crafting gear from people who are just trying to get into Icecrown. This is one of the final pushes to make sure every players gets a crack at Arthas. It's regrettable that we might lose some money makers as part of that push, but I think it's worth it in the end.

Just commenting on the glacial bag change, I seriously doubt anyone is going to buy the Gigantique bag from Haris Pilton over the bag. Why? Because every tailor who actually wants to make money won't sell their glacial bag for more than 1k.

Yea, I still don't know why they added the CD to it. I understand mats are cheaper and more available come 3.3.3 but all its really going to do is slow down the process for leveling tailors who have to eke out those last few points on glacial bags before they get all those great recipes at 450 that are orange but don't award any points. I mean, I have a ton of spellweave, ebonweave and moonshroud in my bank right now, but no one is rushing around asking for glacial bags anyway.
Lastly, woot for a sweet new flying carpet!

From what I understand, based on if you were making the bag with your own cloth, this seven day cooldown on the bag is actually better than the old artificial cooldown from the cloth.
The 7 day cooldown itself is just a way to try to keep a craftable gold-sink a gold sink.

Before this change, a glacial bag required 12 days worth of cooldowns to craft, making it still a rarity. With the removal of tailoring CDs, it would completely devalue the glacial bag to the point where it would sell for maybe 100g more than a frostweave bag. Adding the 7 day cooldown keeps it from flooding the market, but it will still be more available than it once was.

Dharma- the Glacial Bag is the 22 slot bag that requires 450 Tailoring to learn. The frostweave bag is the one that most people use to level and I don't believe that that is being affected.

While I agree with your conclusion this statement is factually incorrect. "...since that's mostly priced on the effort it takes to go mine Titanium nodes in the first place."
It is possible that this varies by server but on my server Titanium is priced mostly based on the cost of Saronite ore. I don't know of a single miner that goes out and mines titanium anymore. They just sell what they pick up along the way while farming Saronite for the alchemists.
Catalyst Feb 22nd 2010 3:24PM
I think it would be silly to just try and mine titanium since it spawns in the same spots and saronite. I can't think of anyone that only mines titanium either.

It's blue, like the one the gnome is standing on. That's pretty much it. A better shot of the carpet is here:

I'm still going to make one, lol.

1. Take the value out of the tailor's cooldowns, removing a source of profit.
2. Add a new tailor-crafted mount to the game.
3. Make the mount BoE.
4. Profit!

It's blue, and slightly cooler that your average flying carper or rug.

waitaminnit -- the HUGE news i see here is that the new carpet appears to SCALE to your character's size.
Chase Feb 22nd 2010 3:13PM
im afraid titansteel bars are going to plumit down to about 15G : /
Falcon6 Feb 22nd 2010 3:30PM
It really depends on the prices of the eternals and the Titanium. I'd bet the Titansteel will probably stay around the 50g mark, if not higher.

"I think it'll mostly be a slight rise in the value of Titanium, since that's mostly priced on the effort it takes to go mine Titanium nodes in the first place."
Meh. I don't know about that. Titanium ORE goes for a lot since the JCers want it for tokens, and I guess that won't be changing, but the bars are way down since the removal of the transmute cooldown. I've just been taking loads of saronite bars and transmuting them to titanium bars for titansteel and the like.

Frozen Orbs has skyrocketed to 25g per on my server.
Jay Feb 22nd 2010 4:01PM
Frozen orbs are now over 50 on mine :(
Pyromelter Feb 22nd 2010 4:06PM
30g on mine is about the cheapest you can get em now. Thank god I never vendored any of mine from dungeons!

It was funny when I saw the news about Frozen Orbs becoming worthwhile again. The day before, I was curious to see what I could sell the 25 or so orbs I have accumulated. Each orb was going for 5g and 20s. I really wish I had bought each orb then. They doubled in price the day the news was released, and now the AH sells them for 20g apiece.
Ianmis Feb 22nd 2010 3:23PM
Why is there even an option of "Need" or "Greed" for Frozen Orbs? Everyone can use them, even before this patch goes live, and now everyone will want them. The only options for such items should be "Take" or "Pass". This is one time where I feel Blizz just didn't think it through. I have always been one that greeded due to it not mattering that much to me as I wasn't interested in taking the time to sell them via the AH. Even so, there should have never been a third option from the beggining. After hearing that we will be able to use them for the purchase of Frost Lotus I decided to just make a macro and inform pug groups of the situation. While I don't even have a toon that can use Frost Lotus for anything, my guild still needs flask for raids. This should help with the supply. I will now just need them, if people can't take the time to pay attention to their chat, I feel no pity for them.
