Insider Trader: Patch 3.3.3 changes for professionals

The most startling change for professions in patch 3.3.3 is probably the new NPC. Frozo the Reknowned takes your Frozen Orbs and turns them into more useful materials. (There was a time I thought I'd never get enough Orbs, but I guess times change.)
Let's take a look behind the jump and do a little more trade-based analysis of these patch 3.3.3 changes, and what it means to the future of professions in Wrath of the Lich King. While it seems that the changes will make a great deal more convenient in the new patch, it does seem like the auction house prices for items are likely to go down.
The two big items that leapt out at me about profession changes are the removals of the creation cooldowns associated with the Titansteel Bar, Moonshroud, Spellweave, and Ebonweave. Before now, it wasn't uncommon to see enterprising professionals selling the use of their cooldown as often as the created items themselves. Since you could only create so many of the items in a given week, people who needed the materials would have to find other crafters who could still smelt or create cloth.
The crafted items created using Titansteel and tailor-cloth are still fairly valid for bootstrapping new raiders up to the level of current content. I suspect that a strong motivation for this cooldown removal is to help encourage new players (or new alts?) to take a crack at killing the Lich King. And while I'll admit that it's a bummer to see a big moneymaker take stage left out of the auction house, I still applaud the idea that it might help new-to-raiding players get a crack at Icecrown.
Of course, this change will devalue the associated cooldown almost completely. Non-miners will still need to find someone who can actually perform the smelting of Titansteel, but the payment for that will probably be entirely on a tipping basis. Hopefully, we'll see a slight increase in the cost of the materials involved in creating Titansteel and the tailor-cloth. I think it'll mostly be a slight rise in the value of Titanium, since that's mostly priced on the effort it takes to go mine Titanium nodes in the first place.
Of course, on the complete opposite side of the spectrum, the Glacial Bag recipe will now have a seven day cooldown. This will serve two purposes that I can detect. First, it allows the developers to open up the personal, character gear available from tailoring when they've removed the cooldown from Moonshroud and Ebonweave, while still preserving the overall cost of Glacial Bags. The cooldown has been moved from raw materials to the final product.
The second thing the Glacial Bag cooldown will do is to help guide a few more folks to Haris Pilton. With it getting to be toward the end of the expansion, it's a pretty good time to drain a lot of the extra gold out of the economy. If Glacial Bags do get more expensive, then perhaps we'll see more people frequenting the Shattrath socialite to pick up their own Gigantique bag and Portable Hole. Sure, those bags are so ridiculously expensive, we won't expect many people to buy them en masse. But if Glacial Bags are more expensive and you want the associated achievement, then it might be enough to tip the scales in favor of Haris.
The big, big news, though, is the addition of Frozo the Renowned. This new vendor will take your Frozen Orbs and give you craft items in return. The items available will be the other crafting Orbs, Eternal elementals, and Frost Lotus. Crusader Orbs will cost you 6 Frozen Orbs, Runed Orbs will cost 4 Frozen Orbs. Everything else will run 1 Frozen Orb per Elemental.
The net effect of this, I think, will be a significant drop in the cost of Elemental Fire and its cousins on the auction house. I think everyone has had pleasant experiences rapidly collecting Frozen Orbs from the Dungeon Finder tool. However, we will likely see even more drama over whether you should Need or Greed the Frozen Orbs that drop in the Heroic. (I suggest always having everyone in the group roll Need on the Frozen Orb -- it'll save trouble in the long run.)
The new ability to purchase both Crusader and Runed Orbs means that you won't be forced to run raids to pick up these crafting items. Some of the gear created with them is still pretty good stuff for select classes. Doing a little research and knowing what items -- like the Breastplate of the White Knight -- are still considered "sexy" could let you turn your raw Frozen Orbs into some final profit.
Tailors get a nifty new pattern called the Frosty Flying Carpet. It's for tailors only, and the recipe will cost you six Frozen Orbs. I'm not sure what's going to separate the Frosty Flying Carpet from the more mundane Magnificent Flying Carpet, but we'll probably get more details soon.
Ultimately, for professions, I think this patch is about accessibility. This late in the expansion, there's no reason to restrict the relatively low-level crafting gear from people who are just trying to get into Icecrown. This is one of the final pushes to make sure every players gets a crack at Arthas. It's regrettable that we might lose some money makers as part of that push, but I think it's worth it in the end.

Removing the marks alone is a massive change to how you gear through PvP. I know a lot of people who avoid BGs because they don't want to grind the ones they don't like in order to upgrade gear. The random BG tool is going to be as big a change for PvP as the random dungeon tool was for PvE.

Gemini, the only bigger change I can think of would be a proper commenting system for this site.

We had hundreds of Frozen Orbs in our guild bank.
Had.
Until last week, when we deemed they were useless and taking up too much space.

I think people started needing Frozen orbs after dungeon finder went live way before this new vendor was announced. It used to be considered rude to need on items everyone can use/sell. There was always a danger of people complaining about ninjas on trade channel. Now that one is gone. what are they gonna do? Instance is done, no one will kick you and no one will complain about you in trade channel.

They can ignore you. If you tick off enough people by ninjaing loot right at the end of a run, then don't be surprised when you have a longer and longer wait to find a random group because there will likely be one person in each forming group who doesn't want you there.

I would love it if Frozo came back as a raid boss, newley empowered by the Frozen Orbs we foolishly squandered for short term crafting loot.
"Now, heroes, face the wrath of my terrifying blue orbs!"
Also, would he be needing a giant ball sack?
Luca Feb 22nd 2010 10:53PM
Then all the badge vendors would have to become bosses as well as boyscout masters with giant sashes.

I recommend unloading your titansteel bars now while the profit is still good. I had a ton in the bank I was saving up, but when I saw these changes I unloaded most of them (still kept some to craft gear for my alts). I'd rather unload them now for 125g/each while I can, because when the next patch hits that value is going to be cut in half.

"The new ability to purchase both Crusader and Runed Orbs means that you won't be forced to run raids to pick up these crafting items."
You're not forced to do that now. You can buy both with the badged you rack up rapidly from doing heroics - which you'd have to do anyway to win any frozen orbs. (Ok, runed orbs need you do downgrade badges first but...!)
SamLowry Feb 22nd 2010 11:53PM
So what can you craft with crusader orbs that doesn't require you to run a raid in the first place?
Umm, anything?
I thought you could only get the recipes by actually doing raids, so us casuals, then, have no need for crusader orbs in the first place.

Here's my 2 copper on Glacial Bags they are worthless. Lets take a look at your slots:
1 The crappy backpack that would be nice to get a larger one.
2 The Dragon Hide Bag its a 22 slot bag and its free. Most guild should be able to take down this boss with no problem now.
3 Enlarged Onyxia Hide Backpack also 22 slot and free. Still doable for current gear levels.
4 Papa's Brand New Bag again 22 slot and free.
5 if you have any professions this is the slot for that bag or for a warlocks soul bag.
After seeing all of this why would you waste any gold on a Glacial bag? The only place that you could still want any for is your own bank and if you have that much stuff its time to clean house or make a alt with its own guild bank.

Fail. Titanium is far more of value in it's raw form for JC's than smelters/blacksmith as it can easily be made from saronite bars. Every couple of days when I still played I either mined all i saw or bought up a bunch on the AH, queued it up to smelt then sent it all to my alchemist to transmute. Any titanium ore I came across I just prospected for gems and powders.

Any news on changes to actually levelling the crafting professions?
It seems to me this would be a good opportunity to reduce the materials cost for lower level crafting.
Since levelling itself is easier and quicker and with the new LFG tool allowing rapid access to low level dungeons, less time is spent "out there" collecting mats and often the gear itself is barely worth the effort.
For new lowbies and rerolls on new servers buying the mats probably isn't an option and for the casual player collecting, for example 12 heavy leather to raise 1 skill point, is harsh as the return on investment is only really significant at the top end of the profession.

I was annoyed by this at first, but i've gotten over it. Titansteel has droped so much on my server it's not worth even making anymore. I have a priest and i got my bike allready so i don't need the stuff. The part that annoys me is the vendor selling eternals which is going to kill the market for them. Just gotta try to unload what i have before the patch drops and a stack of fire goes for 10g

The recent changes are depressing my income. I have tailoring and enchanting at 450. I enjoyed two sources of income: disenchanting unneeded gear/drops and the cool down on my clothes. I did not auction off all the cloth and mats, but just when I needed to raise cash. This worked for me to finance my alts and buy stuff I needed for raiding.
The new need or greed system that permits all party members to take the enchanting mats rather then the drop has greatly depressed the prices on the auction house. Infinite dust is down over 50% and the abyss crystals are down 95% since the new loot system was introduced.
The value in the cloth: mooonshroud, spellweave and ebonweave, is in the cool down each one represented. Spellweave was recently selling for 140 gold apiece, as of last night I was it at around 75 gold as some people were dumping their stores.
Last night, a guild member pointed out that I can now sell the cool down associated with glacial bags. The problem I have with that argument is that the cloths are needed by raiders. The raiders don't need an additional two slots in a bag to get better stats. Also, there is more then one boss that drops 22 slot bags. Most raiders I know have those bags.
I don't doubt some players will find these changes a boon, but I am one who see major losses. Last night, several guild members cheered when they heard the announcement unless they happened to be a tailor or blacksmith.
I have never seen crafting as a income opportunity. The income has always been in material production. In the typical economy, a player needing a crafted item will acquire the mats and get a crafter, usually a guild mate, to assemble the final product gratis.

The glacial bag cooldown is a consolation prize for the x-cloth nerf.
"Here, we know we're taking your money-maker away, but now we'll make this thing that noone cares about more expensive to cushion the blow.. ok?!"
If glacial bags were 30 slot bags, we'd have everyone in Azeroth lining up at our doors, but that just isn't the case. It's 2 slots more than a frostweave bag that have gone down to as low as 40 gold (2 dailies worth) on the auction house. An extra 8 slots of bag space aren't worth much, and I doubt that the 7 day cooldown will make us back the 250g / 4 day profit we were making prior to the patch.

No love for the alchemists though, who still have a cd on their gem and primal transmutes?
