That's it. Pre-ordering. I stood all I could but I can't stands noes mores.
caluhara Feb 23rd 2010 4:50PM
This would be so much better than guild tabards! Guild Overcloaks!
Eisengel Feb 24th 2010 7:10AM
After the wretched abominations of helms that popped up Wrath, I'm hoping for 'overcaps', although at least I have the display toggle.

I feel like we're looking over the edge of a beautiful, yet slippery slope to an appearance tab.
get'cher toboggans out!
Barinthos Feb 23rd 2010 5:01PM
If there was an appearance tab added to the game how would it work? Would you have to have the armor you want it to look like in your inventory, would it be "appearance only" items you have to purchase, find, roll for, kill small animals for? Or would you be able to choose from a preset number of looks/sets?
The only thing I can see is items that "look cool" will be selling for a stupidly high price on the AH if you have to have the item you want to replicate in appearance.
If it's appearance tokens it'll be another time/money sink added by Blizz, they're good at that.
If it's a drop, it'll be a combination of the first two points mentioned above.
Either way it'll be great to have it implemented.

I hope you're right, because I will ride that Toboggan to the ground. They can rip it direct from LOTRO or EQII, just get it in.

Oh 100g for black dye in my WoW? This former Guild Wars fan is excited too!
Coik Feb 23rd 2010 5:18PM
I have a set of Valorous Frostfire in the bank just waiting for the day that appearance tab goes in.
Cyanea Feb 23rd 2010 5:36PM
My Belfadin needs to be dressed in Tier 2, 24/7/365. NO EXCUSES.
Tomatketchup Feb 23rd 2010 7:16PM
It looks pretty cool too. It's nicely coloured and looks longer than your average cloak or cape.
Calaana Feb 23rd 2010 7:33PM
The apperiance tab wouldn't work out well - remember that blizzard uses the silhouettes as an identifier in pvp: Each class has the overall same look model wise each season, with only the skin of the model improving.
I can see them offering, maybe, a way to mod everything save shoulders and helms(maybe gloves too), but that solution seems lame, so I doubt it.
Armour dye presents an interesting issue, one of mostly mechanical origins. Aside from development time, the only problem I can see is, how do you prevent players from making lesser armour look like uber armour? Conceivably, blizzard will add sets that are hard to obtain and look unique, yet follow an art theme.

Appearance tab is up and running in Anarchy Online and works great. Blizzard needs to catch up and steal that idea already too.
Basically it a second set of stuff to wear. In AO you could wear just about anything, even things you normally couldn't, just for the looks. If you had items in your weapon slots, you couldn't initiate battle or fight back against mobs. None of the attributes of the gear you are wearing in the "looks" tab adds to your character attributes.
However if you were just wearing your regular weapons, with none in the "looks" tab, then you could fight, and still have whatever look you wanted. So you could wear one of them grey sets while actually using T10, and look like a funky newb taking down Arthas. It is truly great, and the best thing is, it's basically like extra, armor and weapon specific bag slots.

For the people mentioning PvP and how Blizzard intends silhouette to help identify class / gear... one little thing to note.
In LOTRO, when you enter the PvP zone, your cosmetic tabs are unusable. I can see this being easily implemented in WoW... if you are in a PvP zone, or you enter PvP combat, you're automatically set to 'display gear' rather than 'display costume' until you're out of combat, or out of the zone.
On a PvP server, it would be interesting indeed... imagine, a Rogue tries to gank a weak-looking noob. As soon as they attack, though, they discover that their target is fully decked out in the most recent season's gear. (not that it matters, because if a good rogue tries to gank, there's no 'trying' about it)
Dcruize Feb 25th 2010 9:06AM
Can't think of anything worse than not knowing what an opponent was wearing. If a rogue is visibly wearing wrathful I'd react differently to if he was in T10* - this would be way too open to abuse in pvp.
Cloak skins are fine, but some of the stuff suggested here is pretty weak.
mindrazor Feb 25th 2010 10:00AM
I've got to disagree with the Dcruize. I say take it even further and allow us to wear our favorite set appearance (as long as you have properly earned it) while retaining all of our current best gear stats--AND make characters of the opposite faction non-inspectable again. Ahh, battle would be a roll of the dice...trust to the fates and your skill. Listen, we have all worked really hard to get some of the gear that we love and that now sits tucked away in an old mageweave in a dusty corner of your bank. Let's polish it up and enjoy it again in the light of day. More variety of looks in game, more enjoyment of past lore and struggles that we have shared--it couldn't be better than that.
Also--Dcruize, what's all this "I'd react differently" garbage? I suspect your weakness is showing and that you would run from either one. Plus, it's not the rogue you can see that is the one who will kill you.
Dcruize Jun 10th 2010 12:32PM
Just noticed your post mindrazor - I'd react differently, as would most rogues. Nothing to do with showing a weakness or wanting to run away, just basic common sense. The visual appearance of an enemy can tell you their spec (not all class specific buffs are visible outside of combat), and even if we're just talking about vs rogues here, you wouldn't go against a combat rogue with the same tactics as you would against an assassination rogue.
Also, what does blocking the inspection of characters of the oposite faction achieve? Doubt you'll read this to reply though ;)
Lucera Feb 23rd 2010 4:49PM
Ahem.
*clears throat*
*SQUEES*
Adoisin Feb 23rd 2010 5:15PM
I had the "squee" thing go off too.
I have been wanting something like this for so long. I am sick to death of looking like every other priest (or whatever class I am playing) out there. Now if I can get a dress, robe, or something to wear over my armor to hide it, I would be thrilled! Or better yet, armor dye!!

MMO-Champ already said the Gnomeregan one comes from the Pre-Cat event. I'm sure that others will be similar.
Quest - Operation: Gnomeregan
Objective - [PH]Help King Mekkatorque take back Gnomeregan.
Additional Note - Rewards Gnomeregan Overcloak and Gnomecoming King / Gnomecoming Queen. (And if you're wondering, [PH] just means PlaceHolder)
Description
[PH] Help Mekkatorque take back Gnomeregan.
