You can generally get a pretty good idea of what happens in the ancillary products by reading reviews. I agree that you shouldn't have to buy the related materials to get the whole story, but the Internet provides a pretty easy way around the problem.

I'm pretty leery of books licensed to franchises, though I've heard only good things about Christie Golden. Given how much reading I'm doing to prep for grad school, however, the Warcraft books are kind of low on my list of priorities.
