The Queue: Q2

Gray decided he had to go and be a trekkie too. And that means that there is now an official Q-off in the Queue. Today's featured Q is Q2, played by actor Corbin Bernsen in the Star Trek: The Next Generation episode Deja Q. He primary role that we saw him in was to remove the power of the Q from Q at the request of the Q Continuum.
Q2 isn't my favorite auxiliary Q character, that'd fall to my pre-teen crush Amanda Rogers. But for the sake of this week's Q-capade, Q2 will do nicely.
Majinon asked...
"Do you feel like blue posts are telling enough? Are they in a good place in terms of giving out information?"
Why, what a perfect opportunity to plug our new daily blue roundup column, The Daily Blues!
Now that's out of the way, I think they've gotten significantly better. Ghostcrawler's posts are some of the most informative insights we're likely to ever see into what goes into designing a major video game. He has done an amazing job at bridging the gap between game designer and professor; his posts have really elevated the community and their intelligent discourse about the game -- even though some folks have problems with him (you can't please everyone, after all).
The other blues are contributing more often to meaningful conversations it seems. I'll tip my hat in particular to Zarhym, who doesn't shy away from giving a long diatribe about game concepts and community perceptions. This is the kind of involvement that many felt was lacking in blue posts for a couple of years.
There are places where they could improve, of course. But overall, at least from the standpoint of a WoW.com Editor, the blues have really been doing a great job as of late.
...and before the trolls begin, let's not bother saying I'm a blind Blizzard fanboy. I have personally been very critical of some of their stuff in the past; I just have no problem with pointing out when they're hitting the ball out of the park as well.
UnderwoodLynch asked...
"Do you think that Blizzard will ever change their mind and include gnomes in cinematics? If not why not cut us out of the game?"
I think Blizzard will eventually include gnomes prominently in their cinematics. Something tells me the cataclysmic battle that we might be facing at Gnomergean would be a perfect time for this.
Drecin asked...
"I know Blizzard is making the game and end content available to everyone, and I agree with it. What I would like to see is something that an individual player can do that leads to a title or item that they can be proud of. Maybe through a very difficult quest line or something. The Battered Hilt is cool but that's something anyone can go and buy, and that takes away from it. Will Blizzard ever do something like this? I see those vanilla titles and such I missed out on that, and I don't see anything like that around today, unless I'm mistaken"
Some of the really really really difficult and long grinding activities in Vanilla WoW have gone away -- and as someone who attempted a few of them, I hope they never come back. But Blizzard has made a lot of content available to the individual player, including some of the game's ultimate achievements. Hollow Leviathan left a great comment with a list of titles you can obtain by yourself in solo play:
- Crusader
- The Diplomat
- Ambassador
- Loremaster
- the Exalted
- the Explorer
- Chef
- Salty* (you can fish up the raid bosses by yourself)
- of Darnassus/Undercity
- of Exodar/Silvermoon
- of Ironforge/Sen'jin
- of Stormwind/Orgrimmar
- of Gnomeregan/Thunder Bluff
- of the Shattered Sun
- Bloodsail Admiral
- Guardian of Cenarius
- the Argent Champion
- the Insane
"We have 3.3.3 and hearing about 3.3.5 what's in 3.3.4?"
There's no evidence to suggest patch 3.3.4's existence yet, although it could be inferred by the numbering scheme. However, Blizzard does skip numbers occasionally, and inferring things about patches can be a dangerous game.
So with that said, we just don't know anything about 3.3.4 right now.

Blizzard always includes Gnomes in their cinematics! They're just to short to be seen in the frame!
Elwoods Feb 24th 2010 11:15AM
I was just thinking that there should be a gnome at the back, jumping up and down and waving his arms to get noticed, in every cinematic!
Khrono Feb 24th 2010 11:17AM
Actually there is a Gnome in the Wrathgate cinematic. As Bolvar walks by the troops look in the back and you can see a gnome jumping up and down.

I could have sworn we see at least a pink haired girl gnome (even if it's only for a few seconds) in the Wrathgate cinematic with Bolvar. (Still I know people want more than a few seconds.)

Lol, same thinking, but beaten by a minute.

Correct you are! Little pink haired Gnome engineer looking thing.

Also in that pic there is a male gnome in the upper right wearing a mind control cap.
Eyhk Feb 24th 2010 12:45PM
LOL great catch!

That leads me to a question, are there any prominent Gnome figures in Warcraft lore? Not the dragons dressed as female gnomes but real gnomes.
Veyska Feb 24th 2010 1:30PM
Listen closely after the undead warlock immolates (hellfire, perhaps?) himself in the BC cinematic with all the murlocs around. You can hear what sounds like a male gnome laughing off to the side. It's a gnome rogue, is my theory, he's just too sneaky to be seen. :-P

Firstly, thanks for answering my question.
As to the two gnomes who appeared in the Wrath Gate FMV, while I suppose that counts as gnomes being included, they're not exactly that prominent. Sure it's not really their story, as unless Arthas took a shortcut through Gnomeregan they would only be there to serve the Alliance, but nevertheless.
Still, here's to 3.3.3 eh?

>That leads me to a question, are there any prominent Gnome figures in Warcraft lore? <
Millhouse Manastorm.
Next?
Zanathos Feb 24th 2010 4:28PM
As awesome as Manastorm is, I don't think one appearance at the end of a dungeon qualifies as an important lore character
Wulfkin Feb 24th 2010 5:48PM
Millhouse has done more than Vol'jin, who IS a major lore character. Well that is of course until the upcoming Cataclysm-intro events. Maybe *thats* whats scheduled for 3.3.4?
On a sidenote, wouldnt it be cool if Millhouse Manastorm ends up becoming an important character in the new Gnomeregan? :)

Have rogues featured in any cinematics? I can't remember seeing any previously.
If you're a gnome rogue then you're just SOL :****(
Despard Feb 24th 2010 11:14AM
Rogues have featured in all the cinematics so far. Evidently you don't have good enough stealth perception. ;)

xD

Leroy Jenkins gets promo in every video as well... The action of video starts right after he screams "Leeeeroy" and runs away - that's the reason you can't see him. The movie usually ends right before camera man runs to chase Leroy J.

If i had to guess on the whole patch 3.3.4, I'm betting they're leaving it for like emergency bug fixes. Sort of, they know they're releasing a 3.3.3, and some non-major patch later, named 3.3.5, they are releasing some new content, and they want to leave a space inbetween incase between 3.3.3 and the release of 3.3.5, they need to put out another minor patch to fix some things. It might even be a pre-cata event patch. You never know, but my guess is they are reserving that patch incase of emergency so to say.
Tribus Feb 24th 2010 2:05PM
3.3.4 will surely exist, but whether it will be deployed to the masses as such is what's unlikely. These versions that appear to be skipped are just rolled into future patches. I doubt people would get excited over "The 0.5% less memory writes in WG when the defending team destroys a tower Patch".
