Patch 3.3.3 PTR: Minor Jewelcrafting changes

Yesterday an updated list of changes for PTR patch 3.3.3 was released. Ranging from new pets and mounts to the LFD dungeon stats being tracked, there have been a lot of tweaks. Jewelcrafting is no exception to the rules of change and like other professions is seeing some small changes.
- Icy Prism now requires Frozen Orb, Chalcedony x 1 (Down from 3), Shadow Crystal x 1 (Down from 3), Dark Jade x 1 (Down from 3)
- Intricate Bone Figurine (Daily Quest) - Craft an Intricate Bone Figurine by combining the Proto Dragon Bone with a Sun Crystal and a Dark Jade. (Old - Chalcedony + Dark Jade)
Just like Inscription having the material components reduced for many of it's recipes and the Titansteel cooldown being removed, I think we will continue to see this trend as Cataclysm approaches. Making it easier for players to hit their profession skill caps before the expansion drops is a very good way to get people ready for when the skill cap is raised again.

Interesting read. Glad JC's are getting another look at before Cata. Thanks for staying on the ball guys.

Still waiting for easier ways to get JC tokens. =/

^^^^ This!!! 1.75 Epic Recipes/Week is not helping my OCD "Must have every pattern in the game" mentality for my main that just switched profs!

It would be worth making if we were guaranteed an epic gem, but it's kind of hard to justify at this point.

Perhaps I'm missing something, but I thought chalcedony was high due to the variety of uses it has: icy prism, damaged necklace quest, various token quests, DE possibilities, and skyflare diamond xmute. What is this "due to the rising number of tanks?"
Either way, great news for JCs!

Chalcedony is often cut into (Perfect) Solid Chalcedony, being the stam gem of choice for tanks levelling through LFG, or really cheap level 80s.
scherbaddie Feb 25th 2010 10:50PM
+stam gems are blue
I've always wondered why chalcedony costs more. Other colours are used equally in prisms, transmutes and the token quests, and damaged necklace is too low a drop rate to influence the ah price.
Projectile Feb 25th 2010 10:55PM
I mean I'm sure plenty are bought for that reason, but it's seems unlikely that such a niche demand could be the reason for chalcedony specifically to be so high. For instance, there are far more leveling users of runed bloodstones, but bloodstones still go for 2-3g apiece. Seems more likely the exclusivity of the damaged necklace turn-in.

It's all these reasons that I'm just ALWAYS low on chalcedony. I keep a stack of all the green and blue quality gems in my bank so that I can just grab what I need when I need it. But Chalcedony (and to a lesser extent, Shadow Crystals) I never have a full stack of. I usually sit at 5. And this is because they just get used far more than any other colours.

@scherbaddie:
Chalcedony is used for:
-TWO JC dailies (that's one in three)
-Damaged Necklace repair (even with the low drop rate, JCs will snatch them up from the AH)
-Icy Prism
All of these are things that JCs have (theoretically) a high demand for.

On my server Solid Sky Sapphire [uncut] is a cheaper option for tanking with higher stam than a Solid Chalcedony [uncut]. Chalcedonys are just so expensive. I'd think that it is more than Solid Chalcedonys driving up the price. Tanks love their stam >.>

I really wish they'd make it easier to get the old rare JC cuts now that we're so close to the end of the cycle. It made sense at first back when they were trying to go for diversity, but now it's just a huge hurdle to overcome if you have a brand new jewelcrafter. I know that personally, just getting the patterns applicable to my main and alts takes an insane amount of time to get the tokens.
I really don't mind that epic patterns cost more since they're still relatively new, but all the original launch patterns should either drop to one token, or they should become BoE so that those who have completed their libraries have the opportunity for extra cash.

i'll second this. the costs of the superior-quality cuts (scarlet ruby not cardinal, for example), should be reduced. they cost 3 marks right now, and that's just nuts to expect a JC to want to waste marks on learning more than one or two of those... plus, a lot of the ring and amulet recipes probably cost too much. the cost of making any of the titanium rings is insane now, considering the relatively low value from the items, even for fresh 80s, due to the easy availability of emblem gear.
of course, metagem costs should remain the same, as metas are still as strong as they ever were.

I think I'm going to switch professions. I like jewelcrafting, and Draenai have that nice bonus for it, but... I'm looking more at playing the market these days, and I think some other profession will be nice for that.
Wolfcat Feb 25th 2010 11:44PM
I have a max level JC as my main and I'm really struggling to keep up with other JCers. It takes s'dang long to gather up the tokens. With my enchanter, I could at least buy the dream shards to get new enchants if I had the money...there was no waiting four days to get four tokens (or more) to buy one enchant. It's taken me off wanting to try, really. Cataclysm wil hit before I have all the vendor cuts.
Kole Feb 26th 2010 12:10AM
...and speaking of Cataclysm and Prof skill caps...any word (or have I totally missed that info) about them being raised in the expansion? Or is it just assumed it is since level cap is going to 85?
I wasn't around for any expansion drops so I have no idea what happens...
brian Feb 26th 2010 12:54AM
Professions are going up to 525, and will be called Illustrious.
orkins Feb 26th 2010 2:49AM
If the professions have to be made easier to level the costs of recipes pre BC need to be reduced. At least i know this very well for BS and JC having gone thru the pains. God knows if i didnt have a lvl 80 DK i wud never have had enuf thorium to lvl to 300. And that was when there was no dungeon finder and i was leveling entirely thru questing. U come accross some mining nodes etc that way.
And just to get this point in....why isnt there a JC trainer in all major cities? U wud think that they wud have noticed this by now. And another point...is it just me or is there just single mailbox in TB? :p
Hyacinthe Feb 26th 2010 5:14AM
Jewelcrafting can only be learned by people who have the Burning Crusade expansion, so it's only in the cities that were introduced in that expansion. Most people then point to inscription as proof that this is not the case, but inscription did not come with Wrath, it was patched in just before Wrath's launch.
Jawn Feb 26th 2010 2:22AM
Hurray!
Dang this is long due. Those chalcedonies rarely drop for me.
