WoW Rookie: Effective movement and camera use

Does your numbskull pet always seem to come between you and the object of your affectionate (or not-so-affectionate) clicking? How can you get turned around and react more effectively when something smacks you from behind while you're drinking up? Wouldn't it be nice to see something besides your own rear end? And speaking of which, is it your camera angle or do you think your character been putting on a few extra pounds?
What you need, my friends, is better movement and camera controls. As the challenges and skill level ratchets up over the levels, clunkier styles of viewing your game field and moving your character may eventually cause you to fall behind the performance curve. Our advice: Find out what the best practices are, and then try them out sooner rather than later. Let's face it, changing the way you see and move around the game world can be completely disorienting. You feel as if you're starting all over again, just learning the controls. (Bottom line: It's true. You are.) But the payoff is more efficient, more effective play that ultimately makes your character more enjoyable to play.
WoW Rookie has covered the basics of movement controls before, but if you haven't been reading us for long, you may have missed it. (It's worth noting that we list virtually every WoW Rookie post worth referring back to in our WoW Rookie Guide, updated weekly. Check it out for sections including starting a new character, grouping basics and social conventions and netiquette, all the way up through a special section devoted to the fresh level 80.)
Character Movement 101
There's more than one way to move your character around inside the game. We're going to level with you: Not all of them are created equal. We've covered the basics in our WoW Rookie look at leaner, meaner character controls. Click on over and read it right now; we'll wait until you're back.
Now that you've got the basic concepts down, we can go into a little more detail.
Let's revisit the whole debate on keyboard turning versus mouse turning. Frankly, unless you play on a laptop without a good mouse, you're almost certainly better off learning to move your character by using the mouse. Here's why. Not convinced? Keep reading.- Do you click your spells and abilities with the mouse, or do you use keyboard shortcuts? Yes, this is the keyboard-turning-versus-mouse-turning debate, second verse. Keyboard shortcuts (keybindings) are the fastest, most accurate method of activating your abilities. Setting up keybindings is fast and simple using the default UI.
- Ready for verse three? This one's about targeting: your mouse or the tab key? There's a time and place for both.
- Healers, listen up: Click-casting will save your groupmates' lives (as well as your fingers and grey hairs). It'll also make things easier down the line when you get into raiding and want to use an add-on such as VuhDo or Grid to keep an eye on the larger number of sheep in your flock.
- What are macros? Are they hard to set up? How can they help? Scroll to the bottom of our leaner, meaner controls article for a three-part overview of macros.

Once you've figured out the most efficient method of moving and using your abilities, it's time to make sure you're seeing things as clearly as you should. "I can't seem to explain and convince my friend who just started playing WoW about two weeks ago why she should zoom out more than she is," writes reader Kat. "She won't have the camera distance off default, which is on low and is zoomed in onto her character so much that all she can see is her character and her pet. She constantly complains about her pet being in her way, and when I ask her to look around for something while we are questing, she can't find it because her character and pet are taking up the whole screen."
As you level, game play and encounters become more complex. By the time you're into level 70+ instances and then dipping into raiding, you'll want to be used to seeing and monitoring the entire area around your character -- front, back, all around you. You can't move out of the fire, after all, if you can't see the fire.
So scroll back. If you find you feel literally distanced from your character, make it a habit to scroll up close when you're in town or traveling or what-not. When it's time for business, though, it's time to broaden your view. (And if you want to gain even more perspective, we can show you how to increase your camera distance still farther.)
Controls that fit your class and your playstyleThe key to getting the most from all these tools is giving new setups and methods a fair trial. One evening of frustration? Not nearly long enough. A shift as large as moving from keyboard turning to mouse movement deserves at least a week of regular play. You have to give your brain and your fingers time to adjust to the new method, before you can fairly judge whether or not you've gained added efficiency, speed and/or comfort.
Most important, if you've given these ideas a fair trial (at least a few days, ideally a week or more) and you still feel awkward and uncomfortable, don't think twice about doing what works best for you. Techniques such as mouse-turning and keybindings most definitely optimize your performance, and you'll want to bite the bullet and get used to them if you're pursuing high-end progression raiding or competitive Arena and PvP. Otherwise, WoW is not a twitch game demanding lightning-fast responses. The difference in performance probably won't make or break your character.
What are your favorite tricks for using the keyboard, mouse and camera for maximum performance?

I had a thought regarding your problem. Pressing both the left and right buttons causes your character to "run & steer", so that you run forward, moving the mouse around to turn your entire character. I just took a look at my own configuration since I use this a lot, and according to my keybind settings, "run & steer" are both clear; I don't see any setting at all that says "left and right mouse button", or "button 1 and 2", or any combination like that.
It looks like this may be default behavior that you can't change, unless an addon will disable it.

I use Grid and I'm a healer, but I don't use click casting. It may make things easier for some players, but I'm able to target players healthbars in the Grid window, cast my spell and have the next recipient of my healing targeted before the GCD of my first spell is up. I use Bartender to bind various things to my mouse buttons though - in disc, alt + left click will target me, power infusion and use my first trinket slot and then retarget whoever I'm healing or damaging.
I've also bound A and D to strafe and bound QEWS to various healing spells. For other healers clickcasting will increase their throughput but I wouldn't say its necessary to top meters.

I'd suggest looking at Clique for healers - as a shaman I have my 3 heals bound thusly:
Ctrl+RC = Healing wave
Alt +RC = Lesser healing wave
ctrl+alt +RC = Chain heal
SHift +rc = Cure
ctrl+alt+shift + RC= Earth Shield
I can almost instantly switch between big/little heals with my left hand on Ctrl/alt and my mouse right click to select my group member. Additionally that leaves me with my focus and target open for the tank and the mob.
As a tank, I'm still learning the fine art of situational awareness via mouse movement and key combos. strafe left/turn right makes for a nice round circle to move mobs into a little pack for AOE

I found that click casting got in my way particularly on movement fights. with all of my movement and camera centered on my mouse it was entirely to easy for me to misclick spells. I prefer a combination of mouseover macro, keybinding and VuhDo. I play tanks and dps as well, though so having "commonalities" in ability use/movement help me move from one character to another without much fuss.
Atortanks Feb 25th 2010 3:00PM
If you're going to tank, please try "Never adjust camera" under Camera following style. Makes keeping track of mobs around you infinitely easier. It'll take a few weeks to a month to get used to, but you'll be better for it. Also practice steering your character while the camera is facing your front side.

I mouse-turn except when I'm healing as a druid. Since I'm firing off click-casted HOT's basically every cooldown, I can't spare my mouse for movement.
Pakunoda Feb 25th 2010 3:22PM
Coming from an FPS background which required precise mouse turning and quick keybinds for switching weapons while constantly moving, it felt most natural for me to mimic this in my WoW keybinding setup.
I use only the mouse to turn my character. My A and D keys are bound to strafe. Additionally, I've bound my abilities to keys very close to WASD in order to be able to move VERY quickly, and to easily use my abilities while moving. For example, as a rogue I have mutilate = E, Kick = R, Envenom = F. Additional abilities are on Q, Shift+E, Shift + R, CTRL+F, etc. While maintaining my rotation, I have my fingers on the movement keys at all times, so I feel like I can move a lot faster than if I used the number keys, which it seems a lot of people do.
nekorion Feb 25th 2010 3:48PM
I have very little fps background but I've always found the a/d strafing to be better. I've gone as far recently to unbind camera movement from the mousewheel and tack on an additional two buttons for the scroll wheel.
It just seems that every button after 5 can't be used with shift so I have to being everything with shift, or remove buttons entirely to get more hotkeys.
Pretty soon I'll unbind X=sit and Z=sheathe weapons just for more options.
droknar Feb 25th 2010 4:17PM
I do very similar. I still use WASD for movement, but A and D are strictly for strafing. Mouse is used for camera and character turning. I have auto-run bound to mouse 4.
All of my hotkeys are bound to Q, E, R, T, F, G, and V, and the shift or left CTRL variants of all those (i.e. Q is Mutilate and Shift+Q is dismantle, etc). These keys also represent different abilities based on whether I am in stealth or not. My mouse button 5 is bound to Envenom, my finisher, and Mouse 3 (clicking the wheel) is bound to either Stealth/destealth or Tricks of The Trade depending on if I'm soloing or in a group.
I cannot stress enough the use of macros to assist your play style. On my DK, Rune Strike is a solid DPS bonus (in that role) and a great threat generator when tanking. Macroing it to cast when available on some of your other yellow damage attacks saves you a few clicks per rotation. It is a slight hit in Runic Power management, but I've found it's super helpful for those that forget to use Rune Strike.

I have tried and tried to make all my movements by mouse, but I just can't do it. I use the mouse quite often when I'm ONLY moving, but once I need to fight (PVP or PVE) both hands are firmly on the keyboard. Left hand is controlling movement with the WASD keys (Q & E are my uber faves for strafing) and my right hand controls all my keybound spells on that half of the keyboard. I also have my repeating key presses sped up so I can do an insane some insane spins without mashing the keys or waiting for the repeat to kick in.
I guess the biggest problem I have is when I need to move, target something way over there (using the mouse) and want to fire off a spell at the same time, but it seems that most people would have some slight issues with that.
P.S. I use a roller ball mouse with only 2 buttons plus the scroll wheel in the center.
Ideally I would use both hands for all movement and then some kind of speech recognition to select and fire spells (but that would leave me with a hoarse voice I bet & vent would be impossible) -- or mind control wouldn't be bad, hehe.

I have played WOW since day one.
I am a high end raider doing ICC 10 and 25.
I PVP constantly
AND I keyboard turn.
I will always keyboard turn because I just don't like mouse turning.
jfofla Feb 25th 2010 3:48PM
I should add I use the Naga Mouse with everything keybound and use clique to bind spells to my right click key.
Draknareth Feb 25th 2010 3:54PM
Personally i am a keyboard turner because i use a Razer Naga which allows me to have all of my action-bar skills on my mouse (17 buttons) This means i can fight and use potions etc with just my mouse leaving my keyboard free for movement and turning.
AOP Feb 25th 2010 3:53PM
Movement wise I move solely with the mouse:
Left and right buttons together to move forward
Right and middle to move back
Right alone turns me
left alone turns the camera
Side buttons to strafe
This then leaves my left hand to trigger all abilities from my keyboard.
Spacebar is still jump but that can be easily triggered with my thumb while fingers trigger spells and abilities.
I would recommend trying this if you have not and are looking for an alternative way of control - it's really intuitive once you get used to it.
And if you're just having to travel from A to B it leaves one hand free for coffee and munchies :)
I have tried playing first person with the camera zoomed in but it seemed very disconnected not seeing my weapon or hands like you get in a lot of first person RPG's - I just feel like a floating camera. Third person seems the best.
I tend to play thought with the camera quite close and then zoom out when flying or in a raid where i need to see a larger area.
AOP Feb 25th 2010 3:59PM
oh and i have a key mapped to 'reverse camera' to quickly look behind me.
Targeting is a mixture of click to target or TAB depending on the situation.
A = Autorun
Vogie Feb 25th 2010 4:00PM
I just wish wish wish WISH there was a "diablo" camera option: whenever something would block your view completely (such as a wall, roof, and for the love of god, tree leaves), it'd simply vanish. I love far out, sweeping camera views... but if you aren't in a barrens variant, you are smashed with branches every couple of seconds...
mindrazor Feb 25th 2010 11:47PM
Oh the tree branches--awful situation...have to agree with you.
Hiwa Feb 25th 2010 4:02PM
Happy keyboard turner here. I click-cast heals with my right hand and work the arrow buttons with my left. Because I'm a resto druid I'm constantly on the move and I have to be able to use the keyboard and the mouse simultaneously. I've even gotten so I'm able to move, mouse click and do a few keyboard spells at the same time--but then it helps that I'm a very proficient typist so having my fingers fly over the keyboard is nothing new.
The only time I've really felt that being a keyboard-turner was a problem was when I did a lot of pvp on my rogue. I knew that I was handicapping myself, but I just couldn't get used to moving with the mouse. Oh well, guess it's a good thing I stopped playing that toon about a year ago.
Darkfreak Feb 25th 2010 4:15PM
One thing that always surprises me is the amount of people that don't utilize their mouse wheel. That opens up another 8 keybinds (I don't use alt) and is extremely efficient because your fingers are already on the mouse wheel anyway.
