A look at GM Island and the Player Jail

GM Island is a piece of land that used to exist in the very upper left hand coordinates of Azeroth, far beyond the reach of players. It exists as an in-game entrance point for Blizzard GMs, and is a relatively mundane place. It has a small keep and a dock, a few trees and bushes, and that's it.
There was a time when players were able to swim out to the island, and that swim took around an hour of hard work. It involved using a level one character constantly casting renew and other healing spells; and the player had to know exactly where to point themselves or risk being hopelessly lost in the vast oceans of Azeroth. The trick used to get there was similar to the one that allowed players to get to the Isle of Quel'Danas on the patch 2.4 PTR back in 2008. It was also possible to water-walk out there, but not much is known anymore about that method, at least publicly.
After the break we'll take a look at a few of the features and lore surrounding GM Island, as well as look at some videos. However, please be forewarned that some of the images and videos in this post are from private servers. Enough legitimate in-game footage simply doesn't exist.
Accessing GM Island
It is absolutely impossible to access today via normal means such as swimming out to the island or by using an in-game exploit. If you try hacking the client to get there, chances are the warden won't let you log in.The moral of the story here is that you shouldn't even try to go to the GM Island. It's not worth the risk and you're just asking to have your account entirely revoked for even trying to get there.
Obviously when Cataclysm hits players will attempt to fly out there, and many will no doubt come up with ingenious ways to make it across the vast ocean and avoid fatigue for as long as possible. However, the island now exists inside an instance and cannot be accessed via normal means.
Personal Experience
I don't want to talk about my own experience on GM Isle too much, since the Blizzard employee nice enough to send me there obviously values his or her job; but it's a relatively empty place with nothing special there. No mobs, no NPCs, nothing. Just a building as seen in the pictures. There's also no portals, vendors, herbs, mining nodes, etc. All of those items were part of Developer's Island, which is another place entirely. However, one very interesting feature exists...
The Player Jail, a.k.a. The Box
Back in the day, around the time of the game's launch, players could be transported into a timeout room where they'd have to wait to talk to a GM. The room resembled a Star Trek Holodeck -- it was pure white with blue lines running in block patterns around the entire three-dimensional area. There were no entrances or exits, and players could only leave by hearthing out; which the GM could disable by removing their hearth stone. There was, at one point, a single chair upon which players could sit on. That chair has long since been removed. A WoWWiki edit indicates that the chair has returned in patch 3.3.3, however we've been unable to verify this claim.
There are two images that I could find of the player jail, and it's a relatively mundane area.
Official Acknowledgement
Blizzard has publicly acknowledged the existence of GM Island before on a few occasions. Recently, Zarhym said the following when prompted about its current use:
ZarhymIs GM island real? And if so, what the heck was the point of making it?
Yes. The game masters who respond to you in the game are doing so through a separate chat/support tool. They're not actually using the game client to whisper you, however, logging into the chat client means the character they use to contact players with is logged into all of the realms they need to. While GM invisibility exists, it makes it safer and easier to have a simple storage/port point to keep all of these characters out of the normal game world.

There was, at one point, some lore associated with GM Island in the two characters Ari & Tuskfyre. WoWWiki says on the subject:
Strangely, Blizzard does mention GM Island in some lore. In their recruitment section, on their official European website, the company explains how players from every race (Horde and Alliance alike) do their best to make sure any technical problems in Azeroth are resolved. The gnome "Ari" and the troll "Tuskfyre" are two of these inhabitants of GM Island. These characters are nowhere to be found elsewhere in-game, however.
Videos of GM Island
Below are a few videos of GM Island. Most are from live servers, however from several years ago. Remember that it's now impossible to get to GM Island by normal means.Filed under: Analysis / Opinion, Cheats

I think that Blizz should put something like GM Island in the game scattered across various spots on the map. But instead of using it for the GMs make it a punishment. Instead of banning a person's account for any given period of time, just plop them on a island with no access to any chat except general. They would be given a volleyball as their only source of entertainment, and the waters surrounding the island would have raid boss level sea monsters to prevent any type of escape.

Or a big floating, white, one-shotting, ball. No one escapes "The Island."
(And the player's name should be temporarily changed to "No.6")

I love that show, unfortunately I can't think about these days without the Simpsons parody taking over.

Does it have a glowing hatch?

Not many people will know that GM island actually has vendors on it. When you go there on a private server (I did this about a year and a half ago, on a 2.3 or 2.4 client or something), there are vendors that only can be seen as a GM. These vendors sell every piece of armor and token in the game.
For armor and weapons that cost tokens in normal game, they will have the same cost as well, but the tokens will be available for money (which GMs can use a dot command to generate)
I wish I had taken photos, though. Never even occurred to me. I could try seeing if I have any on my laptop...
Eyhk Feb 26th 2010 2:59PM
That was added to the "private" servers simply for conveniance of the server owners, they aren't there on Blizz's servers.

I'm skeptical, but it could happen...
I have never been to GM Island, but my roommate a few years ago got sent to the Box once for griefing.
My only experience with a GM that was special was back when I was in Kara, pre nerf. Shade of Aran was bugged, he would get to 15%, reset his HP and mana, and then one shot everyone (didnt matter what you did - even killed someone in a DI bubble.) This happened about 8 times.
When the GM finally got to us, he asked us to pull the boss like normal. Fight goes on, repeats what had been happening (we all died). All of a sudden, we are all rezed at the door, the boss is despawned for a few minutes, and then the GM tells us to do it again. As we enter combat, the Hunter's pet turns into a giraffe, the Lock's imp becomes a baby gorilla, and the Aran becomes a mage-ogre.
We are lol'ing so hard in vent as we finally drop the boss, the GM whispers me if we liked our surprise. We tell him yes, and then he tells us to have a good evening and GL in the rest of the raid. When we looted Aran, his entire loot table was on the corpse, all 12 epics.

The skeptical comment was aimed at the guy that was claiming to have made it there during Wrath.
Zahira Feb 27th 2010 4:46AM
That is awesome!

All RPG games deserve this type of secret hidden areas.
It's an achievement in and of itself finding areas like this, with creative ways of using in-game available methods (level 1 regen, items, quest that give you fast swimming, wall hopping, etc).
I don't see why Blizz had to remove the island physically from the game. Sure they can create their own instance for GM purposes, but just the secret nature of the island gives the WoW world as a whole a more adventurous tone. There are no in-game rewards or reprocussions for being there, and there's really nothing to do so why Blizz is being so anal about it I have no idea.

I tend to lean towards the mind set that if I can get somewhere in game without using any shady methods, hacks, programs, etc....then it should be okay.
Many of the secret areas in Azeroth are perfectly accessible and any player can get to. If Blizzard really didn't want us to get there they could easily fix all routes to those places. One of my favourite parts of this game was to find and reach those sorts of locations for the fun and exploration. I couldn't do anything bad there, I had no advantages...it was pure fun and adventure.
Eyhk Feb 26th 2010 3:24PM
Exactly. Adventure was the pure and only reason I got hooked on WoW during Classic beta in the first place. The world was vast and begging for exploration. I learned pretty quickly though, that a level 5 NE hunter taking the boat away from Teldrassil just to meet my undead warlock friend in Mulgore was a bad idea lol. I learned corpse jumping the hard way when I didn't know what a hearthstone was and I could only travel a couple feet before the next strider or moonstalker killed me. Just jumping off the boat from Rut'Theran Village to Auberdine for the first time was pure adventure (and many many minutes of cursing to myself swimming back lol). My main motivation of leveling was to explore more places in the world. The "mystery" of unexplored places made Azeroth that much more adventurous and exciting, especially with the challenges one faced to actually get there. I'd love it if Blizz brought some of that back.

Little known fact: GM Island has an old wooden wheel deep inside a cave of the island, that when turned, moves the island to a different location in Azeroth. Useful when players use exploits to try to find the island. There was an incident on GM island a little while back and in some timelines the island is completely underwater, but in other timelines the island is somewhere out in the ocean... I hear you can blame Chromie for this, and in Cataclysm there may in fact be an entire instance in Cavern of Times to fix said incident.
Vogie Feb 26th 2010 3:22PM
Does that mean John Lock is actually Onyxia?

They shouldn't put stuff in the game if they don't want us to find it.

Dathim Feb 26th 2010 3:33PM
So what you're telling me is that when I got the "Tip" that there was no cow level during loading screens it was merely a ruse to throw me off the fact that there was GM Island. Touche Blizz, Touche.
Eric Feb 26th 2010 3:40PM
Can anyone tell me what sword the guy is carrying in the second video?
Zabre Feb 26th 2010 3:43PM
They should make the island like the island on lost - always moving. I think they should make a playable secret island with 5 mans and raids but in order to access them you have to find the island first. The entrance to the island would change every patch. Just a thought...
Zahira Feb 27th 2010 4:46AM
OK so GM Island is a place I've never cared about or even heard of until now (call me a noob if you must but I was busy playing instead of chasing some boring island), but the place between Darkshore and Moonglade with the dancing trolls, what's up with that? I'd love to hear from people who have been there if it's worth trying to climb into that zone? do you get banned for it? And do they just dance or is there something more to that zone?
