Around Azeroth: Boris the spider
We've seen the big pet bug before, but this one is literally a big pet bug. Elennoko of <Large War Club> on Wyrmrest Accord witnessed a minor incident involving his hunter friend's pet spider, an AV queue, and an Elixir of Giant Growth. He writes, "It apparently has had too much to eat, and is craving something ... bigger than a fly."
Do you have any unusual, beautiful or interesting World of Warcraft images that are just collecting dust in your screenshots folder? We'd love to see them on Around Azeroth! Sharing your screenshot is as simple as e-mailing aroundazeroth@wow.com with a copy of your shot and a brief explanation of the scene. You could be featured here next!
Remember to include your player name, server and/or guild if you want it mentioned. Please include the word "Azeroth" in your post so it does not get swept into the spam bin. We strongly prefer full screen shots without the UI showing -- use alt-Z to remove it. Please, no more battleground scoreboards, Val'kyr on mounts, or pictures of the Ninja Turtles in Dalaran. Older screenshots can be found here.

This can't possibly be Boris. He's black and hairy very small. This guys' definitely not that.

I doubt many of the WoW players will even get the reference, but I enjoyed it.
MusedMoose Feb 26th 2010 7:39PM
I got the reference but only because the song is mentioned in Neil Gaiman's "Death: the Time of Your Life."
Multigeeking FTW!

Thanks a lot.

I'm going to have freaking nightmares for a week. That horned black widow type model is the creepiest image in the whole game.
Shizukera Feb 26th 2010 10:10AM
Freaking hell. That's great for the arachnophobes in the house.
Thanks for that. -_-

What I'd like to know is how Maexxna got all the way to Hillsbrad!

We need one of those guarding Tarren Mill 24/7 in order to scare Migthygokú the Human Ret Paladin and Qthuntarz the Night Elf female Hunter.

Pete: SPIDER ALERT >:(
Oh man, I should totally tame a spider on my huntard and name him Boris.
Jackwraith Feb 26th 2010 11:23AM
I told a friend that he should name his Deathskitter (http://www.wow-petopia.com/images/skin_pix/giantspiderorange.jpg) Entwhistle, but he didn't think it would fit.
Candina@WH Feb 26th 2010 11:41AM
Dude... I'm an arachniphobe and you just ruined my day :-D
chipersoft Feb 26th 2010 11:51AM
Has this bug been fixed? I have GOT to try this!

Yeah, my girlfriend is an arachnophobe. WoW is sometimes quite stressful for her. When levelling her Draenai Shaman on Bloodmyst Isle she actually shrieked and threw the laptop at me while trying to kill one of the larger spiders. (Her camera angle made it look like it was lunging directly for her... a salutary lesson.)
She also got freaked out tanking the spiderboss in Razorfen Downs. I haven't had the heart to tell her about Azjol-Nerub yet...
Faar Feb 26th 2010 1:37PM
Aww, poor girlfriend being hassled by evil wicked spiders... :(
I've always (well, "always", seeing as WoW is just ~5 yrs old) wondered how fake computer graphics spiders can scare arachnophobes since the spiders in question aren't actually real and don't exist at all. They're just a representation, projected through a glass screen, which in of itself is a genuine physical barrier in any case...! This isn't a new topic really, I remember reading forum posts from when WoW classic was new from people being freaked out by leveling through zones like Ashenvale for example.
I wonder, when hunter pets grow so bizarrely huge like ol' Boris here, can they still follow their master inside buildings (so their gigantic hairy legs clip straight through the walls of the house), or do comparatively tiny doorways block their entry...? :D

It's not the realness of a thing, best I can describe it is the very *image* of a thing sets off all sorts of horrible alarm bells (and cursing, screaming, and running) that this thing is BAD AND MAKING IT GO AWAY BY ANY MEANS NECESSARY WOULD BE AWESOME THANKS. I know most spiders are not 'harmful' (save for the black widows in the garage), but it doesn't stop my brain from saying FACK! UGLY THING! MAKE IT GO AWAY OH GOD IT'S COMING OVER HERE. BAD BAD BAD BAD BAD-
It's like an aversion times a million. :/

@Faar Yeah, we rolled Night Elves (she warrior tanks and I druid heal - instadungeons ftw) and of course one of the first things you have to do is kill spiders in Teldrassil. Then there are more in Ashenvale. Then more in Arathi Highlands. Then she rolled a shaman to solo (hence Bloodmyst). It never ends!
@VioletArrows That's pretty much what she says too - it's the movement and the image that trip some switch in her brain. Sorry to hear you're afflicted by it too.
I should note that she rides motorbikes and plays rugby, so aside from the slight spider problem she is pretty tough. ;)
