Know Your Lore: The Black Dragonflight, page 3

And what a hiding it was. Calling herself Lady Sinestra, she sought to complete what her mate could not hope to accomplish, and rule the world on her own. For Lady Sinestra had done the unthinkable -- somewhere near Grim Batol lay the shattered remains of the Demon Soul, and Sinestra found the shards and reforged them into a new Demon Soul, shielding it from all Azerothian magic so that it could not be destroyed again. With it, she could breed her own flight of superior dragons and keep them firmly under her control. She used the Demon Soul in combination with another artifact called Balacgos's Bane -- an object designed by the blue dragon Balacgos to absorb unharnessed latent magic and keep it out of the hands of people that would use it for ill purposes. But the artifact backfired, absorbing the dragon's magic and leaving him a lifeless husk.
The third element Sinestra used was a nether drake. Way back when the Dark Portal was opened for the second time, nether drakes attempted to swarm through to Azeroth, and promptly found themselves killed by the blue dragonflight. But the blues had missed one drake, Zzeraku, who was captured by Lady Sinestra and taken to Grim Batol for the purposes of feeding his essence to her warped young.
What else would a dragon need to make babies...oh that's right, eggs. Good thing there were all those leftover eggs in Outland from Deathwing's attempt to take it over. Players can check out Lady Sinestra, curiously devoid of any disfigurements, on Netherwing Ledge at the Dragonmaw Base Camp, paying Overlord Mor'ghor a visit. They have a nice little conversation about the state of Azeroth, Nefarian's failures, her master's work, and eggs. In exchange for the eggs, Lady Sinestra offers the backs of her drakes, to ride upon as needed. Sinestra takes off, leaving a bewildered Overlord to ponder what he's just been told -- that Deathwing is alive, and plotting something.

Only he wasn't, really. Lady Sinestra, ticked about the general state of her body because of Deathwing, her children's failures to accomplish anything worthwhile, and just all around angry at the world in general decided she'd much rather have the whole thing to herself. Herself, and her charming and well-mannered new babies.
These dragons, dubbed Twilight dragons by a draenei priestess named Iridi who had been sent to free Zzeraku from his imprisonment, were unlike any dragon flight seen previously. Much like the Chromatic dragons from Nefarian's experiments, the Twilight flight started out as regular, old-fashioned eggs from any of the five flights out there. Once the eggs were procured, they were fed the essence of other flights, and then imbued with the essence of the nether drakes. Sinestra had dozens upon dozens of these eggs, merely waiting for the magic infusion that would make them whole, hearty, and deadly. Her first two children failed, destroyed by Korialstrasz and Kalecgos, but the third lived and grew larger than his mother's fondest expectations in the depth of Grim Batol, carefully watched over by Sinestra as he grew.
However, with Korialztrasz, Kalegos, the previously mentioned draenei priestess and a slew of other people working against her, Sinestra would not succeed with her plans. Once again, the Demon Soul was destroyed -- this time not by Rhonin, but by his wife Vereesa. She used a staff that Iridi carried with her from Draenor, thinking that if nothing Azerothian could destroy the thing, perhaps something Draenic in origin would do. It did, the Demon Soul shattered, Sinestra went just as insane as her former mate and tried to put it together a third time, and Korialstraz hucked Balacgos's Bane at the twice-destroyed artifact, shattering it utterly. The Demon Soul was destroyed. Again. For good. We hope.
Sintharia's plans fell apart around her. No longer able to control her new child via the Demon Soul, it turned against her, destroying them both. Grim Batol collapsed inward upon itself, destroying the remainder of the Twilight eggs Sintharia had been experimenting on. Sintharia, along with her failed experiment of a child, were both destroyed and the world was safe once more.
Again, sort of.

Deep beneath Grim Batol, we're talking way, way down underground, Deepholm if you will, Deathwing clutched the eggs he'd managed to swipe from Sintharia's stash. He had the foundation, and through his clever use of Sintharia as an unwitting puppet, he had the methods necessary to bring the Twilight flight to full fruition. In Wrath of the Lich King, his methods were apparently successful, as the Obsidian Sanctum now plays host to Sartharion, three Twilight drakes, and a host of eggs and whelps. Once a shrine, now breeding ground, this is why it is necessary for players to kill Sartharion and the Twilight drakes.
The black dragonflight, despite all appearances is far from defeated, although it seems that the purpose of the flight itself has gone from being watchers over the mountains and deep caverns below the earth to... genetic engineering and trying to produce a supreme race of dragonkind. Whether or not they are successful with this mission is yet to be seen, although hints at the contents of the upcoming Ruby Sanctum raid instance indicate the efforts in destroying the Obsidian Sanctum weren't enough.
One thing however is utterly certain: we haven't seen the last of the Black Dragonflight by a long shot, nor have we seen the last of its leader, who will be returning to the scene later this year in Cataclysm.

Awesome job once again, Anne. :D
Will you be randomly choosing the next dragonflight, or have you decided right from the beginning of this large edition of KYL?
the_rage_of_trebor Feb 27th 2010 9:29PM
Reviewing the Blu Dragonflight would be the next logical choice as they are more loreful that the other two that are left, mostly.
jasonkidd1234 Feb 27th 2010 10:25PM
What about Grull =(
I wanted to know if Deathwing ever got revenge on him. I read somewhere that Grull got killed easily by Deathwing, despite players fighting him in game. I'm not sure where I read it though.
jasonkidd1234 Feb 27th 2010 10:26PM
Ah, maybe that was it.
I remember feeling kind of bad for Deathwing until reading that he gave Grull a bit of a licking, and was wondering if Grull the Dragonkiller was indeed a Dragonkiller, or more of a "Smaller non-aspect dragon"killer.

Actually, I wouldn't mind seeing the Green and Bronze flights being put on hold until we see more of what's going on with them in Cataclysm. Greens are obviously going to be important (hence Stormrage) but the Bronze flight still has some issues to be seen in the far future (like what the heck is Noz really up to? I mean, I did the one quest in Dragonblight, but srsly)

well...I have a theory bout the bronze and Noz
Noz can travel through time at ease, so it is maybe possible to have multiple copies of himself
Now, Noz is convinced (as seen through the Caverns of Time instances) that everything MUST HAPPEN AS IT DOES! But the Infinite Dragonflight want to destroy the timeline, causing chaos and disorder....or do they?
Let's think bout that. Escape from Durnholde, they pretty much tried to keep Thrall from escaping, to even maybe trying to kill him. Why? Thrall is pretty awesome, he is a pretty just guy. It mostly could be to keep the Horde from being formed.
Then the next instance occurs. Dark Portal. The infinite want to kill Medivh, stopping him from bringing our lovable and ever friendly orc friends from Draenor to Azeroth. And for what? To keep these wonderful green skinned folk from killing and marauding practically all of Eastern Kingdoms. Damn Infinite....trying to save lives.
Then Culling (I don't think there was any Infinite in Hyjal). These dragons were trying to kill Arthas, keeping him from destroying the city, and thus keeping him from plunging into madness and taking up Shadowmourne, which would lead him to become the Lich King....yeah...that actually was a pretty good idea...
Why is the Infinite doing this? Who are the infinite? WHERE IS WALDO!?
Well, I have an idea...the Infinite are not some bizarre dragon aspect from nowhere. Nope, not at all.
They are the Bronze Dragonflight. And Noz is leading them. And why not? It is possible, just as Deathwing went a tad bit bonkers from the old god whispers, maybe Noz did too. Or maybe trying to preserve time so much made him see things in a different light. "What if I destroy Thrall? Yes, the Horde would never form, but the Undead would find no allies, leaving them to rot. Killing Medivh would save Azeroth from the orcs destruction. And killing Arthas would mean he could never reach Shadowmourne, allowing Illidan to destroy the Frozen Throne, ridding the world of the Scourge!". Now, if he really DID get away with this, horrible things would happen, no matter how good it appears now. So that would explain why it is still important for us to stop the Infinite.

On;y thing i want to edit about the guy above me is that the Lich King Has Frostmourne not Shadowmourne.

Whats the deal with the Titans anyway? Why on earth are they going around reordering planets? Are they just a wandering pack of incredibly powerful obsessive compulsives or they have some sort of greater purpose in mind?
Noah Feb 27th 2010 10:09PM
They are attempting to reorder the positions and structures of all the planets in the universe in order to form one giant sudoku board.
arcaneterror Feb 27th 2010 10:21PM
Azeroth is "4" in row 1, column 5.
Artificial Feb 28th 2010 3:18AM
It gives them something to do between luncheons on the Ethereal Plane of Atrii.

I dunno if anybody else was a Babylon 5 fan, but the Titan/Old God dynamic in Warcraft kind of reminds me of the Vorlon/Shadow one in B5. Especially with the more recent developments we've seen in WotLK (I'm thinking here specifically of Algalon--a being whose entire job is to wipe out planets that aren't going according to plan, even if this reset results in the genocide of millions, billions of intelligent beings).
Wilk Feb 27th 2010 10:09PM
Is it possible to have references for all of this? It was mentioned that Wrynn's adventure was in the comic, but it doesn't say where the information concerning Sinestra developing the Twilight dragonflight at Grim Batol can be found.

Y'know....I find it funny that everyone complains about Knaack's writing, yet they keep buying his books....
Last time i read an author i didn't like, Instead of getting up in arms and protesting my hatred, I just stopped buying. ;)
Zhiva Feb 28th 2010 1:15AM
IRC book distribution channel is your friend.
NeoPhobos Feb 28th 2010 2:53AM
It doesn't matter if you use money, gift certificates, etc. As long as you PURCHASE the book, it encourages the book stores to keep it in stock; and the more sales for Knaak's books, the more he is likely to continue writing them.
If you want to read the book for continuity's sake, but you hate him as an author, just borrow it from a friend. If you can't do that, well then stop complaining about how bad of an author he is, because you're still purchasing his work. Therefore you are encouraging him to continue, as well as encouraging Blizz to continue having him write books about their lore.

My questions:
1, Who's badder, Old Gods or the Burning Legion? What would happen when the Old Gods whisper to Nathrezims or Pitlords? Evil vs Evil...would they cancel out each other and both become lovely pets, like the much-huggable Yoggy?
2, Why Old Gods only appear on Azeroth (so far)? If it indeed follows C'thulu mythology, then Azeroth itself is probably the ultimate, uber^3 Old God, which is probably why the Titans were so obsessed with shaping up this particular planet.
3, Did the benevolent Gods (such as Elune) get along with the Old Gods? Or Elune was one of them but uber^3 cuter than anything the Titans had ever seen. She was left along with one condition: don't ever try to seduce the mortals.
4, Who are those Gods people anyway?
Faar Feb 28th 2010 5:21AM
Who's badder, the Death Star or the USS Enterprise? Pretty much same type of dealie - no way of knowing, and only nerdy geeks would care to know anyway. ;)
The Old Gods of Azeroth appear on Azeroth because that's where they live (and they live there 'coz Chris Metzen thinks the Cthulhu mythos is cool I suspect - and I agree with that). Other Old Gods (good, evil, indifferent) might live on other worlds, Blizzard simply hasn't said anything on the matter.
Beings like Elune, "the holy light", the Earth Mother, Hakkar and possibly a bunch of others I forget, seem to be gods on a much lesser scale than the Old Gods. Anyway, I wonder if Elune relly is as nice as the Night Elves seem to think she is - after all, one of them prayed for help to deal with the Burning Legion's corruption, received a scythe that summoned up craploads of Worgen that ultimately caused nearly as much mayhem as the problem the scythe was supposed to fix! :D I'd be wary if Elune ever offered to hold the door open for me when I'm carrying a big birthday cake, she'd probably slam it shut just as I'm walking through it...

This is the first KYL I've read since the article's return, and all I have to say is "Holy Crap, this article is awesome."
I'm a newb in the lore of Warcraft -- I haven't played anything before Wrath, and Lore via questing often feels... too limited. Add in the fact that a lot of the lore ends up getting revealed through raid + dungeon related quests in the 'vanilla' world, and I feel like I've missed a ton. This article has taught me more lore than most of my playtime in WoW, and I'm going to go read the rest of Anne's articles right now.
Thank you so much for the awesome article.

I always had trouble taking Deathwing seriously because of his name. I mean, c'mon, DEATHWING? It makes him sound like an adolescent whelp who mopes around the spawning cave listening to Death Cab for Cutie.
This article helped a lot with that. Thanks!
