New race/class combos will not be live before Cataclysm

That said, it is probably true that the new race/class combinations are a bit different from the examples above. After all, they simply take existing races and existing classes and put them together, so it might seem that it wouldn't be too hard to just turn them on.
But at the same time, Blizzard is focused on upgrading and integrating the new player experience with Cataclysm, which means revamping or adjusting starter zones and streamlining quests and mechanics for low levels. With that in mind, what better way to kick the whole thing off than with a new set of playable characters at the start of Cataclysm? They're also obviously tying in at least some of the new class/race combinations with Cataclysm lore, such as night elf mages and tauren paladins.
Whatever the reason, you'll definitely have to wait a while longer to level that dwarven shaman you've always wanted, and you may be a few weeks late to the end game because of it. Then again, if we're lucky, it won't take them too long to unlock race changing for the new combos.
World of Warcraft: Cataclysm will destroy Azeroth as we know it. Nothing will be the same. In WoW.com's Guide to Cataclysm you can find out everything you need to know about WoW's third expansion. From Goblins and Worgens to Mastery and Guild changes, it's all there for your cataclysmic enjoyment.Filed under: News items, Cataclysm

We killed it.

holy shit dude i agree so much, i just never wanna see NE mages and troll druids... makes no sense lore wise
Sihylm Feb 28th 2010 1:52PM
Tastes like butthurt in here. All the combos are sound lorewise
Alanid Feb 28th 2010 1:57PM
@eddy, yes but he was most likely a mage manipulating the pants, flowers, and foliage around him. He was only a druid due to game mechanics.

People ho say no to the official combos need to use some logic here.
Trolls are shamanistic, trolls are related to bests, hence, beast slaying racial. They also use nature magic, which is used by both Shamans and Druids.
They are also familiar with voodoo magic, which can make transformations...
For NE Mages you need to look at their past and from what they have become Night Elves.
Race/Class combos I think we wont see judging by the current state in Warcraft and lore:
Tauren Warlocks (I mean, they'd have to be Mages first. Anyway, the impossible demon cow.)
Draenei Druids (Dwarves did find their liking in nature, but not Draenei. Yet.)
There are more, of course, but I just don't want to list them, really.
And currently, I want to see a Tauren Rogue the most.

Orc Mages.
What? They're just too stupid.
Burden Feb 28th 2010 3:16PM
Orc Mages are just as stupid as Orc Warlocks.
Warlocks are Mages who got power greedy and corrupted by their powerful magic trying to become more powerful.
Any race with Warlocks could have Mages.

@Alanid
My mage want a spell that lets me manipulate pants. GIVE ME MY MAGIC PANTS.
Thorzon Feb 28th 2010 5:10PM
Really, the only Race/Class combo that doesn't make sense to me is the Orc Magi. It doesn't make any sense to me at all.
Ragen Feb 28th 2010 6:03PM
Here I'll add in a bit about why things like Orc Mages are possible:
If you've been keeping up with "Know your Lore", Orcs have had warlocks for eternity. Gul'dan was a notable example. They were (I assume) taught by demons to use Fel Energy to perform tasks such as shadow manipulation, demonic invocation, and overall awesomeness.
Mages, in contrast, were taught how to manipulate the Arcane, which in turn allowed the ability to work on Fire and Frost.
Also seated in Lore, a (non-Orc) mage who had decided to transverse the darker side of magic had become a warlock. They went from Class A to Class B, to put it simply.
In theory (and in reality come Cataclysm) that should mean that they can go from Class B to Class A. If you already have experience with one form of magic, what's to stop you from learning another?
We ARE talking about intelligent, sentient beings who can make decisions for themselves, you know.

I just thought they would turn them on early to lower the stress of all the race changes right after cata :)
I mean, as I understand the game coding, it's just 'flipping a switch' to allow the vast majority of the combinations. The only ones that would be an issue require unique art (like Dwarf Totems or Troll Forms) and some of it is already in game (the totems).
Shock Feb 28th 2010 8:00PM
Wish all you want. Some of these I never wanna see live. But undead paladins - yes please :)
Possum Feb 28th 2010 8:57PM
People objecting to Orc Mages are apparently forgetting that people (even orcs) have an ability to learn. They've been living closely with trolls (and troll mages) for years now. You think they couldn't have picked it up, that the trolls might have decided to teach them that too? Not to mention the belfs being their allies now who are probably the best arcane magic manipulators in game.
