Breakfast Topic: Who could be a new world boss in Cataclysm?

Blizzard touched a bit on why they've not used world bosses in Wrath in the recent Twitter developer chat. They observed that there are issues with the bosses that have prevented them from feeling comfortable making more world bosses, such as issues with groups racing to bosses, or the ability of people outside raid groups to deliberately mess up boss attempts. On the other side of the coin, though, they did imply that they like world bosses, and will probably implement more in Cataclysm if and when they can find a satisfactory work-around for the problems.
Now, as a former player of Everquest, where pretty much every major raid boss was a "world boss," I can vouch that it wasn't always pleasant. Druids kiting bosses, uber guilds racing each other to bosses, and arguments over who got to kill what on which week were all common occurrences, and the drama that occurred over such things would put most guild drama in WoW to shame. That said, there's something that's rather epic about fighting a large imposing boss in the "open air," knowing that you're not stuck on a special server and that the fate of the world could be at stake -- or at least, the fate of a poor clueless newbie who could stumble on the guy by accident.
So there's a few questions we could ask here. Are the problems the devs list a good enough reason to keep world bosses off the table? Are they fixable? And either way, what world bosses would you like to see in Cataclysm?
I have to say, I'd sort of like to see that awesome giant Kraken model get used for a boss battle. We've seen it used most in single-person quests, but it's so amazingly large and beautiful that I'd love to see a chance for a raid to take it on, maybe in tandem with the Kvaldir, who are awesome and shouldn't disappear into the mists of "that was last expansion" like the Ethereals mostly did. A Ragnaros-like encounter where the Kvaldir summon the Kraken and attack you every time it "submerges" could be a lot of fun.

"Tripster".
He stands around outside SFK politely insulting you in an English accent.
He's a 1-25 man raid. His difficulty scales with the amount of beer he has consumed and will destroy you all with his musical attacks!

"EARTH!"
"FIRE!"
"WIND!"
"WATER!"
"HEART!"
"Go Planet!"
"By your powers combined, I am Captain Planet!"
Captain Planet, he's our hero
Gonna take pollution down to zero
He's our powers magnified
And he's fighting on the planet's side
Captain Planet, he's our hero
Gonna take pollution down to zero
Gonna help him put asunder
Bad guys who like to loot and plunder
"You'll pay for this Captain Planet!"
We're the Planeteers
You can be one too
'Cause saving our planet is the thing to do!
Looting and polluting is not the way
Hear what Captain Planet has to say!
"The Power is Yours!"

The concept of world bosses is cool, really. I like it.
But on my server where my Alliance brethren are outnumbered 3 to 1, just like VoA, I can't imagine getting access to it very often.
PictoKong Mar 1st 2010 8:11AM
What could be done, like it was said many times, is to phase the guy when you've done it in the week.
So, more than one down/week, and everytime its a different group

@PictoKong
That's an interesting idea, could definitely work.

My way i think the best to bring back raid boss is to made them non-tagable and made them attacking Major City
you know in Wotlk, they put some group quest where the quest item was lootable for everyone.
I remember in Vanilla, someone kitted Kazzak to Stormwind, he was there killing noobs and destroying everything
that was epic. I would like to see more often stuff like that

The phasing idea is an interesting one. I’d actually like to see it fully realized.
What if there was a zone that was essentially a weekly quest hub. The zone was being terrorized by some big baddie who would appear from time to time to cause a ruckus. Naturally, all of the quests that would appear in a “he’s not dead yet” phase could be about fortifying the place and setting up obstacles or what not.
Once a player participated in a group that killed him, however, they enter a phase where the baddie has been vanquished. The weekly quests convert to quests around cleaning up the place, helping the wounded, etc.
What I don’t think we want to see, however, is a world boss who is always on. That might sound great, but then he really isn’t a “world boss” he’s just an instanced boss presented in a different way. Part of the mystique of the world bosses is the fact that you’re never really sure when they will pop and assembling an emergency group to get them down.
I think it would make sense for the boss to pop each day, remain active for a couple of hours, and de-spawn for a few hours. If the boss is not killed on a particular day, he may re-spawn on that same day for some more shenanigans. If he is killed on a day, then he’s done. This will limit the number of times he’s able to be killed and will still create some of the “Oh snap! We gotta get our stuff together” moments that we saw in vanilla.

Sounds Like someone really wants to see the Lurker from Below again.
Phantom Mar 1st 2010 8:14AM
they should have the a world boss out somewhere "frozen" somewhere and a quest has to be done to access him at the same time if possible have it somewhat phased so everyone can take him down without drama happening
