Breakfast Topic: Who could be a new world boss in Cataclysm?

Blizzard touched a bit on why they've not used world bosses in Wrath in the recent Twitter developer chat. They observed that there are issues with the bosses that have prevented them from feeling comfortable making more world bosses, such as issues with groups racing to bosses, or the ability of people outside raid groups to deliberately mess up boss attempts. On the other side of the coin, though, they did imply that they like world bosses, and will probably implement more in Cataclysm if and when they can find a satisfactory work-around for the problems.
Now, as a former player of Everquest, where pretty much every major raid boss was a "world boss," I can vouch that it wasn't always pleasant. Druids kiting bosses, uber guilds racing each other to bosses, and arguments over who got to kill what on which week were all common occurrences, and the drama that occurred over such things would put most guild drama in WoW to shame. That said, there's something that's rather epic about fighting a large imposing boss in the "open air," knowing that you're not stuck on a special server and that the fate of the world could be at stake -- or at least, the fate of a poor clueless newbie who could stumble on the guy by accident.
So there's a few questions we could ask here. Are the problems the devs list a good enough reason to keep world bosses off the table? Are they fixable? And either way, what world bosses would you like to see in Cataclysm?
I have to say, I'd sort of like to see that awesome giant Kraken model get used for a boss battle. We've seen it used most in single-person quests, but it's so amazingly large and beautiful that I'd love to see a chance for a raid to take it on, maybe in tandem with the Kvaldir, who are awesome and shouldn't disappear into the mists of "that was last expansion" like the Ethereals mostly did. A Ragnaros-like encounter where the Kvaldir summon the Kraken and attack you every time it "submerges" could be a lot of fun.

I've decided that Hellscream IS Deathwing, so I'll just wait until we get to kill him ourselves... over and over and over again...

I think this is a pretty cool idea! It would be even cooler if there could somehow be scaling or mechanics that meant even relatively low level folks could contribute something and get the reward/buff/exp. Something like the candles that people could buy and throw at Omen to do damage.

saurfang will kill hellscream with a roundhouse kick tbh

Having a world raid boss in a phased zone would kind of defeat the purpose of a "world boss". It might as well be inside an instance where everyone can kill it. The point is to have a single boss that can be killed once and is on a respawn timer.

I think world bosses should stay out of the new Expansion. World bosses were NEVER a good idea. They are not real progression, they wouldn't drop anything you really need, and getting ganked while killing one is NEVER a good idea.
World Bosses have no place in WoW anymore. They were good in theory, but sucked in practice.

a true WORLD boss should be a boss that requires EVERYONE to fight. Im thinking something along the lines of ten 25 man guilds and everyone else to bring the boss down. Now THAT would be a world boss...
jealouspirate Mar 1st 2010 8:55AM
Ten 25 man guilds plus extras?
They can call the boss "Lag".
Thorlo Mar 1st 2010 8:57AM
THAT would be retarded... 1 healer messes up and misses a heal the tank in their guild goes down and then that add is loose.. then all the idiots stand in fire. dont decurse and that guild fails... then all 250 are dead because a few idiots.. who do you blame? who is giving orders? who's vent are you using?
its a stupid idea.. i just thought i would let you know. the end.

I though the same. If the boss requires something like 200 people to kill it, most of the problems would be solved, because no one guild can kill it. There is still a chance that the other faction will try to prevent the kill on PvP servers. The only world boss I killed recently was Omen, and there both Alliance and Horde players helped to down it. There was some PvP after the kill :)

Cataclysm means basically everything going to hell.. sooo my vote is for Gamon as a world boss for T13

Even though I dont PvP, I think a PvP world boss would make sense, a 25man level horde Elite at crossroads for instance.
You keep the world boss functionality, if it drops PvP loot you wont get as many PvE guilds racing to kill it.
Interference from other players restricted to members of the opposite faction, which would make sense, and make it more fun.
When Crossroads or [Insert - alliance area that gets raided as much as x-roads is - here] alerts spam, less likely for it to just be a random level 60 having a stab at a guard or two.

This makes a little more sense as a new BG: some shiny thing is behind a door and in front of that door is a black dragon; Alliance and Horde must take down the dragon then each other to get the shiny. It is instanced to prevent ganking and with BG-PVP actually being something something useful to do (and not to quick-level as) with items that they are saying would matter, it could be the idea of a World Boss without the terrible actuality they seem to be.
GCL Mar 1st 2010 9:00AM
How about a Cleaner-type mechanic to prevent interference?
How about this: once the boss is engaged, everyone in the raid group of the player who initiated combat is tagged with a debuff that lasts until the boss is dead or the raid wipes. Anyone who enters combat with the boss or the debuffed players gets cleaned out by some encounter-appropriate instagib (Cleaners, zombies erupting from the ground, being swallowed by the earth, turned to stone, whatever).

I think that nobody is obligued to kill these bosses. They are there for the people that wants to risk themselves with a little world PvP or with other groups killing them. That's the fun part there.
They aren't a must. You can completely skip them, they don't even have achievements, so no need to QQ, if you don't like the mechanics skip them.
joshbuddha Mar 1st 2010 9:05AM
Well there were several world boss dragons in vanilla with this being an actual dragon expansion so why not more dragon world bosses? How about a return MalGanis encounter? Some sort of unearthed golem / giant type bosses due to the earth splitting events make sense as well. Oh and MOAR OLD GODS.... need more tentacle bosses, they have a +1 against asian schoolgirls.
Disgrace Mar 1st 2010 9:11AM
I would love to see a giant titan creation near uldum.
Shakool Mar 1st 2010 9:21AM
I'm wondering why they don't use the phasing technology as a lockout for those who kill the boss. Everybody could kill him and this could prevent player to screw other people fight.
Lemming Mar 1st 2010 9:24AM
Personally, I think the way world-bosses work need to be changed before any new ones get added.
I'd like to see something a bit like WAR's public quests:
Have a message broadcast on /.local that the boss has been enganged so anyone in the zone can flock towards it and take part. Make them extra tough to kill to allow time for people to get interested and join the fun and have a a loot roll based on participation a top-3 prize once the boss is downed.
It should still take a raid-sized group to realistically take them down, of course. But some world bosses could be geared towards 25-man, 40-man etc...
Really, it needs to take the same kind of organisation as a city-raid but with a more free-for-all feeling for anyone in the immediate vicinity.
