Cataclysm: Stat and system changes for resto shaman

Here's the list of things we need to be aware of:
- MP/5: Gone
- Spirit: Now the regen stat of choice for all healers, gear with spirit is specifically healer gear.
- Spell Power: Gone from all items except for weapons, marking specific weapons as caster items.
- Intellect : Spell power is now derived from intellect, making this stat very important
- Haste: Still around.
- Critical Strike Rating: Still around.
- Spell Ranks: Gone, Spells will now grow with you as you level. Levels at which you can learn spells will be changing.
- Mastery: This is a specialization stat found on gear. Mastery allows for you to be better at your defined role
- Existing gear: Your existing gear will be updated to fall in line with these changes before Cataclysm is released
What this means for resto shaman:
Stamina: With everyone getting more stamina we will see the evening out of health pools. Blizzard has said many times that they want to see mitigation through other stats and talents, and would like to see an increased overall raid health total. As a healer this means you'll have a better chance to predict incoming damage and plan your heals and heal priority accordingly. This also means that you will see players being one-shot less often and give you more time to land heals on them. This also means that you are less likely to die from a stray boss ability and it lets you focus on your job of healing that much more. This is a very good change for us.
MP/5 & Spirit: MP/5 has been a restoration shaman go to stat for as long as it has existed. Resto shaman gear has featured this stat many times over and has clearly marked it as gear for set aside from a healing minded totem thrower. Now instead our gear will come with spirit, and our talents and abilities will be changed to reflect this shift and we will see our mana regen derived from spirit now instead. Time to get ready for Spirit Fingers!
Intellect & Spell Power: Spell Power was another one of those stats that was present on all of our gear, but now Spellpower is being removed from all except weapons. Instead now we turn to intellect as our main source of spellpower. This may result in lower mana gained from intellect as we know it in order to even out the massive amounts of Int we will be seeing on gear.
Haste & Crit: Luckily for us, these stats are staying around, so not much will be changing on that front. You will still obtain the same benefit from them you do now.
Spell Ranks: The removal of spell ranks is actually beneficial for our particular specialization. Leveling as a restoration shaman was always a bit of a chore just due to the limited spells and the time between ranks. There were several levels in which the spells just weren't quite enough and you didn't get a rank up for a while. Instead now the abilities are being redone to increase with level. This means a smoother transition between levels and an easier time healing your way through your levels. I for one look forward to this change.
Mastery: The mastery stat is something that will allow you to be better at your chosen specialization. This equates to free stats found on "your" gear. Ghost crawler I think said it best.
GhostcrawlerThere is a small Mastery bonus for wearing "your" gear. So a Balance druid who takes cloth will be essentially giving up free stats. Sometimes that may be worth it to them (just as sometimes it's worth it for a Resto druid to take that piece of +hit gear), but often times it won't be worth it especially if it's an upgrade for you.
This will help us further define what is "our" gear and will help cut down on other classes claiming "our" gear for themselves. I look forward to this change and the further defining of where loot should be allocated.
Reforging: I will mention this briefly here. This new ability will allow us to move stats around on gear, allowing us to tweak each piece just that much more letting us shift certain stats around, like converting Haste into Crit. As more information on that becomes available we'll let you know, but the bottom line is this will enable you to further customize your gear to your specified role.
Existing Gear: Rest assured change is coming, we just don't know when yet. When it does come, it will come before the release of the expansion. At that time the gear we are wearing will be altered to fit the model Blizzard has set down at the time of change. You can expect to see some of the following things when this happens.
- A lot more Stamina.
- All of your Spell Power converted to Intellect and Stamina.
- Spirit instead of MP5, but since our talents and abilities will already be changed to benefit from spirit, this change shouldn't be that scary to you. In fact you will probably look forward to it.
Things may change between now and the release of the update, try to keep that in the back of your mind as you read through all the information that comes out. Conversion numbers may fluctuate, stat scale may vary, but you can be certain that somethings will change along the way.
We still don't know exactly how much Spirit will equal what amount or regen, or how much SP and mana we will receive from Int. In time all this information will become available and you can bet we will keep you up to date with each change.
I will finish by telling you I personally find this very exciting. The consolidation of stats reduces complexity of gear choices, but allows for a whole new depth. New players will find it easier to determine what is an upgrade on the fly, while veterans and number crunchers will have all the information they need to figure out the specifics with theory crafting as they do now.
World of Warcraft: Cataclysm will destroy Azeroth as we know it. Nothing will be the same. In WoW.com's Guide to Cataclysm you can find out everything you need to know about WoW's third expansion. From Goblins and Worgens to Mastery and Guild changes, it's all there for your cataclysmic enjoyment.

I wonder what will happen to enchanters recipes that give stats they are removing. I mean enchant bracers: spellpower etc. Hope they change them into something useful rather than removing them completely.
Ishammel Mar 2nd 2010 9:19AM
There are loads of potential problems like that! Many Inscription recipes, Enchanting Recipes, other crafting recipes that act as buffs (like Spellthread in Tailoring) are going to have to be overhauled - preferably not removed as you say.
However, this is Blizzard and I don't think they would have leapt into this saying they are going to redesign the majority of the game if they were going to take the lazy way out and simply delete tricky or somewhat redundant items/spells like these.
Food for thought though!

If you think about the transfer from Healing Power to pure Spell Power, there are already many enchants like this in-game.
For instance, 'Enchant Weapon - Spellpower' and 'Enchant Weapon - Healing Power' are both level 300 recipes, but they now do exactly the same thing, yet they're still in-game.
An interesting point, however, is that Spellpower gives 30+SP and Healing Power gives 29+SP, proves the conversion rates weren't perfect!
I would expect Blizzard to do something similar in this instance.

Actually, I'm rather more curious what the gear is going to look like for other shamans. I think I saw somewhere that shadow priests and elemental shamans will get a Spirit-to-Hit talent, so healing gear will also be DPS gear. But what about Enhancement? They currently share gear with Hunters, but Hunters are moving to focus rather than mana. Will enhancement get its own gear set, or will it have a Spirit-to-X conversion stat as well?
Ishammel Mar 2nd 2010 9:19AM
Boomkins and Elemental Shamans, not Shadow Priests as far as I am aware!
Vogie Mar 2nd 2010 10:13AM
Enhancement shamans will use DPS Mail, which is Agi/Stam/Hit/haste. "Intellect" will be converted from a standing stat, more than likely using Mental Dexterity in reverse: Increases your intellect by 33/66/100% of your agility. You'll still assumably have water shield, improved Stormstrike, and ShamWOW! I mean Rage. Mastery stats will probably be linked to cooldown reduction, Haste, and Attack power.
Since Resto Shamans and Ele shamans share the same gear, we'll see more conversions. Spirit is there, so mana regen is easily covered. Elemental precision will probably change to convert X/Y/Z% spirit to Hit rating. Mastery stats will probably linked to Haste, Spellpower, and Regen. Resto Mastery will probably linked to Haste, Crit, and Regen.

Plate DPS(Strength, Hit) = Arms/Fury Warriors, DPS DKs, Ret Pallys
Plate Tank(Strength, Dodge, Parry, Block Rating) = Prot Warriors, Tank DKs, Prot Pallys
Plate Spell(Int, Spirit) = Holy Pallys
Mail Melee (Agility, Hit) = Hunters, Enhance Shaman
Mail Spell (Int, Spirit) = Resto/Elemental Shaman
Leather Melee (Agility, Hit) = Rogues, Kitty/Bear Druids
Leather Spell (Int, Spirit) = Resto/Moonkin Druid
Cloth DPS(Int, Hit) = Warlock, Mage Shadow Priest
Cloth Heal(Int, Spirit) = Holy Priest
Moonkin will get spirit=hit talent
Elemental will get spirit=hit talent
Enhance will have a tool to regain mana. Probably a change to Shamanistic Rage
Ret will probably manage their mana the same way as they do now with Divine Plea
All melee centric gear could have Expertise on it.
All gear could have crit on it. (Minus plate tank gear)
All gear could have haste on it. (Minus plate tank gear, though that would be fun if it was on that too)
All gear could have the new stat Mastery on it.

Yeah I'm a tad confused about this myself. Right now I'm working on gearing up a Resto/Ele shaman alt. I was about to buy one of the triumph rings when I realized that I'm unsure which will be the best post the Cata changes (and they work as a good example of what other choices I'll need to be making down the line).
Givens:
1.) Spirit is currently relatively useless to Shaman
2.) MP5 will go away and become Spirit in Cata
3.) Spirit will be converted to hit for Ele through some TBD mechanism
4.) Hearmender Circle stats that differ: Crit 50, MP5 25
5.) Band of the Invoker stats that differ: Haste 49, Spirit 50
So currently, of the two caster rings the Heartmender Circle is good for Resto, but neither is really good for Ele as they both have a relatively wasted stat. Now, let's say that the pre-Cata patch were going to drop tomorrow hypothetically. I'm confused by A) which ring would then become best for Resto, and B) would that ring also then be the best for Ele. My assumption would be that the MP5 on HC becomes Spirit, and the Spirit on BotI becomes Hit in order to keep the idea that there's a healer ring and caster dps ring. Do these changes mean that the difference between your healing set and your ele offset will be the relative balance between crit and haste most likely? I mean unless they are implementing some sort of Spirit cap, it seems to me that Spirit to Resto will always be good while Spirit to Ele will eventually cause you to drown in hit.

"Cataclysm is right around the corner"
Here's some other things that are right around the corner:
Football season. Basketball season (the next one). Elections. Winter (next season's). Halloween.
After vanilla, it was over 16 months (source:http://www.wowwiki.com/World_of_Warcraft:_The_Burning_Crusade) after BC was announced before it was actually shipped.
Cautious optimism will serve better this time around.
CM Mar 2nd 2010 9:26AM
Yeah I'll be shocked if we see Cataclysm before November.
Drevan Mar 2nd 2010 10:18AM
Hahah! I thought the same thing when I read that. 8-9+ months from now hardly seems "Just around the corner"

Larger health pools will be good for resto shamans because without using a cooldown, our instant heals consist of: riptide and earth shield on whoever got it - 99% of the time the tank.
So, I have been stacking haste on my resto shaman and found it to be far more handy than spellpower.
I expect that larger health pools and lower mana regen/higher mana costs means we'll need to pay more attention to a balance between haste and crit (to proc some water shields) and ... spirit O_o.
Brad Mar 2nd 2010 10:12AM
I welcome the changes for my resto shaman. This means that after level 40, a resto shaman can level much easier from having an elemental offspec since that will be the exact same gear (the way I read the notes). I have a mage main but a fairly well geared resto shaman alt that I've never bothered to roll on offspec gear for. If I'm going to dps, it'll be on my mage so I've thought that the off spec gear was better used as a shard instead. As soon as it gets to be time to start leveling again, my shaman will be ready to level again by using an elemental offspec because of the changes.

where did this picture come from?
epic Mar 2nd 2010 10:56AM
you might wanna fix "Spirit: Now the regen stat of choice for all healers, gear with spirit is specifically healer gear." to caster gear not healer; as spirit will convert to hit for elemental.
Accor Mar 2nd 2010 11:14AM
More dumbing down of the game.
I'm seeing so many people look at the proposed changes and saying they won't be getting this expansion, that it's a good time to finally give up. I suspect that cataclysm may well be the right name for this expansion as I think that subscriber numbers are going to drop very considerably unless they announce something other than yet more dumbing down of the game to suit the "Mwwwwah!! I want is NOW!!!" kiddies!
JC_Icefox Mar 2nd 2010 11:41AM
Cool story bro.
Got anything better than hearsay to back that up?
Henrah Mar 2nd 2010 12:18PM
@ Accor.
Bye.

Yea im not thrilled with these changes everyone is gonna have the same gear, 70k hp, and still stand in fire. Make healing easier so we can have more bad healers... making spirit instead of mp5 sweet, making spellpower out of intell. just sounds dumb. Wheres the challenge, Theorycrafting just goes out the door, stack intell, stack haste, U WIN. Why even have combo gems? I like figuring out should I go all haste, or do I go sp haste and get the socket bonus, do i go all haste and get the sp trinket etc. Sounds like there will be very limited selections in gear... so now the 4 healing classes will want the same piece and Pallies will be able to wear everyone of them. gg
