The Queue: Earthquake bonanza

Today we're going to skip the wacky shenanigans that usually plague the intros to the Queue. Instead, I'm going to blow your minds with the news that Chile's recent earthquake was large enough that it has potentially moved the Earth's axis and an Earth day is now shorter because of it.

"When running Shadowfang Keep during Love is in the Air, did anyone else notice Arugal on the other side of the courthouse gate when you first enter the instance? Has he always been there at that location or was he added for the Love is in the Air boss event?"
That's always been there, but it's incredibly easy to miss. That little event starts up as soon as you take a few steps into the instance, so if you take a right to get started instead of running straight ahead up to the gate, you can miss it completely. I ran Shadowfang Keep dozens of times before I even noticed it the first time. I was amazed that I managed to miss it for so long.

"I am about to install WoW on a new computer. Do I have to swap out all 11 discs then patch? What's the quickest way to install the full set with both expansions from scratch?"
The Wrath of the Lich King installer can install the whole thing, you don't need to start from Vanilla and work your way up. Pop the Wrath disc(s) in and you're good to go.

"In TBC we were able to fly in and out of anywhere in Shattrath City. Why are we not allowed to use flying mounts inside of Dalaran? Why the change? I can't remember any issues with people being mounted in Shatt."
Like other readers mentioned in the comments yesterday, the primary reason given is that they want Dalaran to feel more like a city. They wanted people on the ground and in the streets, running around and mingling together. In Shattrath people could float around wherever they pleased and zoom from point A to point B on their epic flying mount. They didn't like that. It's also a much smaller city that is far more laggy than Shattrath ever was. If everyone could sit around on their flying mounts, the streets of Dalaran would be completely hidden by the sparkly wings of dragons. That's no good.
Personally, I thought Shattrath felt a lot more like a city than Dalaran. Dalaran is far too small and compact. It kind of feels like I'm doing my trading and banking in Barbie's Magical Dollhouse.

"Is there a reason why caster heirloom trinkets don't give you mana back when you are healing in a group? ...is it a bug?"
It's not a bug. Those trinkets require killing blows. They're not for healing, they're for murder. Heirlooms are aimed at making solo leveling as quick and painless as possible and aren't really aimed at roles like healing or tanking.
Harsesis asked...
"What is the purpose of the 1 hour wait time to get your money from auctions? I remember that it wasn't always this way, I believe a patch during BC implemented this, but I never understood the change. I guess the same question could be asked about the purpose of the 1 hour wait time to mail stuff to other characters, where it is instantaneous to mail between alts."
I believe that when this was all implemented, the reason given was that it slowed down the money laundering process that gold sellers will use to distribute sold, stolen and purchased gold. It makes it harder to move funds around, and the gold seller doesn't have instant gratification when they sell off the entire contents of a stolen account. There's a waiting period involved, and that slows things down and makes it all a bit more risky for the hacker.
Those concerns aren't really there when you're mailing items from one character on your account to another on the same account.

"Why is it that the Titans couldn't kill the Old Gods, but we can? So far the world hasn't fallen apart due to their destruction and while it will (thanks Deathwing), it's not because of the whole roots of corruption. Everywhere it says that the Titans could only contain the Old Gods to allow order to blossom, yet we just walk into their prisons and execute them. So if we keep killing Old Gods will Azeroth be torn apart?"
We certainly don't know for sure what the consequences will be, but Chris Metzen mentioned at BlizzCon 09 that we'll see the ill effects of what we've done sometime down the road. Somewhere, sometime, there will be ramifications.

How do things work if you just buy WotLK and never buy BC?
Phaelan Mar 2nd 2010 2:13PM
you wont be able to level from 61-70, you have to have BC to get through those levels and for the Draenei and Blood Elf races. plus i think BC is required for Wrath
soccerdude7 Mar 2nd 2010 2:15PM
It won't work... I tried it. You must buy BC first because otherwise when you enter the key in it says "ERROR: CODE IS FUNKY" or some variation. I tried this 5 times so I'm positive my code was right. Bought BC and it upgraded perfectly.
Lasher Mar 2nd 2010 2:18PM
Wotlk requires BC.
Michael Mar 2nd 2010 3:09PM
Error: code is funky? Whoa, slow down with your technical mumbo-jumbo, poindexter.
Beruza Mar 2nd 2010 3:32PM
If you have registered WoW on battle.net (which everyone currently playing is required to do) you can install WoW right from there, without any discs. You must have previously installed Vanilla and BC and Wrath in order for this to work.
I know this because I wanted WoW installed on 2 computers and I didn't feel like installing all the discs so I tried it from battle.net.
This works for any game that you registered on Battle.net. You can even play Warcraft and Diablo without the play discs if you do this.

You just need about an hour and a decent high-speed connection that won't fail you...
jbodar Mar 2nd 2010 5:52PM
To fix ERROR: CODE IS FUNKY, we need to remove the tiny unicorn jumping around inside your computer, poking holes in your hard drive. That'll be $1000...
Brian Mar 4th 2010 4:21PM
You do not need to re-install WoW. It works with zero errors if you copy and paste the entire directory onto the new computer. Just create a link to Launcher.exe and you are all set. Only it won't be listed as an installed program, to uninstall it, just delete the DIrectory.

I've been reading up on the lore about priests, particularly shadow priests. What I want to know is were there shadow priests before the Forsaken founded the Cult of the Forgotten Shadow?
Mitawa Mar 2nd 2010 3:25PM
The closer you get to light, the greater your shadow becomes.
Chevela Mar 2nd 2010 4:57PM
"Mitawa:
The closer you get to light, the greater your shadow becomes."
That... is so... deep. (No, I'm not smoking anything)
Although I have wondered how and why a Priest would take up the Shadow and employ it for his/her own devices (Forsaken aside). How would they even get to that point?
Jayfitty Mar 2nd 2010 5:12PM
In Auchenai Crypts there is a Naaru that says ""Without the void, the Light cannot exist."
windstalker668 Mar 2nd 2010 10:33PM
I have to agree, I think it is one of those, "to fully understand or control one thing, you have to fully understand and control another." To fully grasp light you have to have some concept of shadow or else you are kinda misguided. A good example would be the Legends series of Dragonlance, where the Priestess Crisania has to go through a deep understanding of darkness and despair before she can become a true cleric of good.

"Heirlooms are aimed at making solo leveling as quick and painless as possible and aren't really aimed at roles like healing or tanking"
Heh, tell that to my priest, she's packing 120+ spellpower at 25 or so, and tanks love my renew
SpaceGoatPriest Mar 2nd 2010 3:43PM
Yea heirlooms are awesome at low levels. My shammy is mid 20s(and has every heirloom, including the ring) and with just the fire nova totem thing, I was doing the most damage AND healing at the same time.
Michael Mar 2nd 2010 4:38PM
Only with heirlooms can you tank, heal, and lead in dps!! :P

Who says we killed the Old Gods? According to the comic, ages after players steamrolled through Ahn'Qiraj, C'thun still had consciousness and influence.
As far as I know, we're not attacking the whole of an old god in these encounters. Just those bits that have broken through the containment matrix.
That being said, even if we are "killing" them, I'm fairly certain they take a bit more than just our petty magics to be made permanently dead.
Alternately: You could compare us to surgeon's knives. A very small flea biting off the top of a bad growth that the titan's giant fingers could never hope to snap away cleanly.
Dazaras Mar 2nd 2010 2:42PM
From what I understand, the Titans could not kill the Old Gods because they were too ingrained in the world, and the Titans are too big and powerful and so incapable of the precision required to destroy them without destroying Azeroth. Mortal races, on the other hand, are small enough to get the job done, and have recently become powerful enough to do it.
Mattimus Mar 2nd 2010 2:43PM
Yeah, I had figured that at least C'thun was still alive, just with a few less tentacles and one less eyeball.
Yogg-saron, on the other hand, seems like the subject of a more direct attack than C'thun was. I'm not a regular raider so I never hit Yogg-saron in Ulduar, but I do recall an attack on Yogg-saron's brain... which would mean that he'd actually be dead, as opposed to just poking out one of C'thun's eyes.
