The Queue: We love fasty, too
Welcome back to The Queue, WoW.com's daily Q&A column where the WoW.com team answers your questions about the World of Warcraft. Alex Ziebart will be your host today.
The above video is brought to you by our very own Mat McCurley. You might know him better as "that guy that writes about addons I guess" if you don't pay much attention to author names. There's a backstory to the video, but I think leaving it out makes it far more hilarious.
Enjoy!
clundgren asked...
"Why is there a continued perception of ret paladins as overpowered? Raid data shows them to be a lower tier DPS class on ICC bosses, and they are not particularly feared in arena. What gives? Did patch 3.0.2 leave that much of a lasting impression?"
They're still incredibly powerful in 5-mans and they're monsters in battlegrounds. Those two things are the PvE and PvP content that the most players experience. Ret paladins are kings of the low brackets of content. Even though ret paladins aren't dominant in Icecrown, they can walk into heroic Utgarde Keep and be top DPS effortlessly. (Edit: Original wording of the previous sentence was far too strong for what I actually meant, my apologies.)They will struggle along in high arena brackets, but stick them in Warsong Gulch and people will die.
It's all very odd, but unfortunately true. Ret paladins will rule the school in the normal every day content, but as soon as it's time for us to be competitive where it counts... that's a whole different story. Ret paladins are overpowered in that lower content, but we don't really compare when it comes time to be competitive. If we can burst out a bunch of damage with all of our buttons ready to go and the appropriate seal, we're awesome. Put us in a sustained DPS situation and we're... not so awesome. We have to make up for it with unrivaled utility. We're still worth taking places.
Travieso asked...
"I really didn't care for the stat change articles. Was it really necessary to have about 15 articles that all said the same thing?"
Yes. You might be surprised just how many people request that we write these things, and oftentimes just rolling them together into "casters" or "melee" isn't sufficient for people. If we just do a melee article, we will still get endless questions from rogues or warriors or retribution paladins about class-specific topics, or even just asking us to go over them in more detail. And then if we do those in detail, we get a cascade of hate mail that we didn't do X and Y specs in detail, so clearly we must hate those classes/specs. Clearly. Plus, if we do them more specifically, they're easier for those classes/specs to find further down the road if they/we need to reference them. It's better that we just get them all done and out there and then nobody, reader or writer, needs to worry about it after.
It's very rare that we go all out on a topic like that, but we did see that series as necessary to get people the information that they want. We do understand that it got a bit spammy to the people that simply do not care, but... even via RSS, you don't need to read every post. You can just mark them read and be done.
It's a bit "damned if you do, damned if you don't" and when it comes to supplying content a large majority of our readership wants, we're going to fall on the 'do' camp rather than the 'don't.'
Johnny asked...
"Do female dwarf rogues exist?"
Sure they do! I have one in my guild. Along with a female dwarf hunter, a female dwarf death knight, a female dwarf paladin...
Castellan asked...
"I re-rolled recently on a US server so that I could play with my son. I had my main on an EU server and had taken a break to finish university (I was a mature student) and secure a job; so I've missed everything from Uldaur onwards. My boy and me just dinged 70, I think 70-80 shouldn't take us too long, but all the articles I'm reading on wow.com are talking like Wrath is soooo over, and everyone's just waiting for Cata. Will we get to enjoy some of the Wrath endgame do you think? Or should we just level some alts?"
You have plenty of time to enjoy Wrath's endgame. Cataclysm is still many months out, and Blizzard has made it very easy to jump into upper tiers of content with a little effort. If you pick up a full outfit of Triumph badge gear and fill in the off-pieces with epics from the new Icecrown 5-mans, you're basically ready to step into 10-man Icecrown already. You can take it slower and check out Ulduar and ToC if you want, but if you want to jump right into the top tiers, you're able to do it assuming you have the skill to match the gear.
Rob & J asked...
"I have a ton of Dalaran cooking awards. I've purchased all I can from the vendor. Any hopes of new content anytime (soon) to spend them on?"
We've heard nothing about new cooking awards, there definitely aren't any in patch 3.3.3. I think it's unlikely we'll see any in Wrath of the Lich King. I just turned all of my cooking awards into Northern Spices, you might want to as well.

Ret paladins are hardly bottom of the barrel DPS. Out of all the hybrids ret paladins come out just below fury warriors, and beat warlocks as well as survival hunters.

That's parses from all classes on all fights on ICC normal modes, where I am getting my data from. As you can clearly see, ret paladins are ranked 6 of 21 or so possible DPS specs.
Astrumsenior Mar 4th 2010 2:15PM
Just fyi, this info is a bit inaccurate......First, not everyone is turning in all the info. they should.
Secondly, notice how alot of these specs are all within 1k dps of each other......
Tim Mar 4th 2010 2:17PM
Please advise on the source of your data sir.

Cool chart. Obviously, there are a ton of other factors to consider, but in context it's informative. Are you getting that from your own recount stats or wowonline, etc?
Triforceelf Mar 4th 2010 2:21PM
I am getting the data from Elitist Jerks, and it does break it down by fight for you if you need it.
NeoPhobos Mar 4th 2010 2:25PM
So according to that chart (http://img52.imageshack.us/img52/4093/100216dps2.png), DKs need buffs all around, even though many people still say that DKs are OP...
Tusker Mar 4th 2010 2:48PM
If it comes from Elitist Jerks it's probably Simcrafted. Actual output by actual guilds is a better measure.

Double checked, its by way of EJ from world of logs. I still trust this over the other site, as they do not break it down by spec.

For a hybrid class, they certainly don't pay much of a tax in any spec. Great survival and damage as tanks. Incredible tank (two at once) healing. And considering how much goes into playing an Affliction Warlock vs. a Ret Paladin, I'd say they don't pay much of a hybrid tax in that area. They have amazing sustained AoE DPS. They do lose some of their potency when they only have one target to hit, but not enough to say they're really paying a tax. As for "overpowered", that's a relative term. Hopefully someday Blizzard will find a way to make hybrid classes play in a hybrid manner. Until then, the Pwnadins will rule many parts of the game.

Actually, the methodology used to generate that chart is extremely dodgy. You can read the comments in the link you last provided for a good explanation as to why. To make a long story short, those aren't averages, they're medians, which means they're one particular raider's stats (saying "I took the median of the top 20" is essentially the same as saying "I took the 10th best person's stats and used those alone"), which will basically inflate everyone's stats above average, but inflate those classes with less consistent, more randomly influenced damage significantly more. Indeed, it will often show lower average DPS specs above higher average DPS specs due to selecting for the lucky people who the RNG favored with more crits and higher damage rolls.
Artificial Mar 4th 2010 3:26PM
tl;dr version of my last comment: You've posted a chart showing which specs benefit most from luck. You haven't posted a chart that shows which specs output the best average DPS.
adyuaa Mar 4th 2010 3:43PM
DKs aren't broken into tanks and dps. The tanks are probably pulling each spec down.
cronos12 Mar 4th 2010 4:03PM
No love for Subtlety Rogues... We don't even get anyone putting numbers up for us on the chart...

And I can saw one thing:wow, is that depressing to see where Shamans fall on those charts. In 9 of the 19 fights that listed shamans at all, we were at the bottom of the heap. If we include all the fights where we were either last or next-to-last, it covers 13 of the 19. We never ranked higher than 6th.
That's really... depressing.
ToyChristopher Mar 4th 2010 4:22PM
@wdsrmail Holy Paladin and Protection Paladins don't pay a "hybrid" tax because there are no pure tank classes or pure healing classes.
Moonkinmaniac Mar 4th 2010 2:07PM
Do you think all this gnome troll business will give us new dailies in the next patch? I love dailies, but if I see the argent tournament again I may have to throw my monitor out a window...
Caz Mar 4th 2010 3:24PM
I'm with you. I just started doing the tourney dailies again to get the rest of the mounts, and after two days I'm so over it.
But I want those last five mounts!
Lucidien Mar 4th 2010 5:44PM
I wanted my mounts so badly... now I feel a little pang of hate whenever I even so much as RDF a ToC-run. The gold was nice, but the monotony... By the end of it I just wanted to murder the questgivers in their sleep and put a lance through the face of every Paladin or Cat-Druid or Rogue who ever ganked a person doing those quests. Not to mention my desire to set the boats in that gap between Icecrown and that stupid island on fire.
I swear if they didn't pay well and offer me mounts and squires and tabards because I'm an achievement slave like that, I would have capped my AC rep and never returned. As it happens, nao I have an Argent Tournament Tabard sitting in my bank which could at any time teleport me back there. Taunting me it is.

Ret pallys? Not overpowered in ICC. I call bull on that. I saw a ret pally do 11k dps in the first wing.
