WoW Rookie: Stay on target with raid icons
New around here? WoW Rookie points WoW's newest players to the basics of a good start in the World of Warcraft. For links to all our tips, tricks and how-to's, visit WoW.com's WoW Rookie Guide.
In your group of regulars, who's the nipple and who's the thong? Raid target icons can take a new player by surprise. Baddies look that much more terrifying with a skull icon floating over their heads -- yet all in all, it seems like a logical mechanic that you didn't happen to notice whenever it kicked in. But what about that mob over there, with something that looks like an orange nipple? And why does the party leader keep saying to hit the "thong" next?
Talk about a blast from the past ... With the death of crowd control, target icons don't get much of a workout any more. They were a staple of play, however, back in the days of huge pulls that needed to be controlled and taken down in a specific order. Icons are still used today on a limited basis in raiding and a few notoriously twitchy instance pulls, and they can make it easier to spot players or NPCs who must be protected or escorted in a crowd. Still, it's fairly likely that you can run all the way up to 80 and through the Dungeon Finder system without ever seeing more than the occasional skull or three -- and that's no good for building savvy players.
- Raid target icons make it possible to identify particular mobs and set the kill order for an encounter in an objective, unchanging fashion.
- While tanks or group leaders usually handle marking duties, anyone can set a raid target icon over a mob. Right-click on any mob's portrait and choose a symbol from the drop-down menu.
- The skull icon is almost universally set as the main DPS target. The cross (also often called X) is usually next in line ... but practice varies widely after that. Whoever marks for your group or raid should clearly state the kill order or assign players to tank/crowd control particular mobs. (If you need clarification, ASK!)
- Raid icons make it easy to spot players or NPCs (including you!) who move around a lot or need to move through a large crowd.
You'll often hear raid icons called "lucky charms," a reference to the ubiquitous kids' breakfast cereal of the same name, which is filled with little marshmallow shapes ("Hearts, stars, horseshoes, clovers and blue moons, pots of gold and rainbows, and the red balloon!"). In practice, the chewy little nuggets proved nearly impossible to identify unless you knew the jingle ... Sharing something in common with WoW's "nipples" and "thongs."
Common WoW icon parlance goes something like this:
- Yellow star Star
- Orange circle Circle, coin, nipple, condom, the orange
- Purple diamond Diamond
- Green triangle Triangle, thong
- Silver moon Moon
- Blue square Square, box
- Red X X, cross
- Skull Skull
[Edited to add a few of the more common naming suggestions. Thanks, readers!]
Advanced targeting
The easiest way to set raid icons quickly and efficiently is with keybindings. Use the game's default interface to set them to whatever keys are convenient for you. Several nifty icon add-ons such as Lucky Charms do exist. If you find yourself marking frequently and you prefer to use your keybindings for something else, investigate a good mods site like Curse or WoW Interface for more options.
Even more on-the-fly marking can be done with mouseover macros. These can become a little too detailed for WoW Rookie, but feel free to add your own favorites in the comments.

I believe you have forgotten that some prefer the term "tribangle"
Goulashia Mar 4th 2010 9:11AM
Circle can be "condom" too.
I felt stupid for watching the video because that's how I felt like I was being treated, that's not very nice.
lemur Mar 4th 2010 9:14AM
In my guild its the condom- but only because one of our tanks doesn't like being marked with it, and we all think its funny to mark him with it.
Mekca Mar 4th 2010 9:40AM
We rather call it; 'nipple of shame' and give it to the one that caused a wipe ...
Minidrake Mar 4th 2010 9:48AM
In my guilds on Nagrand, it's the Triangle of Shame, for the person (usually me) that does something exceptionally stupid.
Like trying to sap a vrykul boss in Utgarde Keep...

Honestly I enjoyed that video, especially when it first came out. I believe it was actually poking a bit of fun at some of their guild hunters that kept going for the wrong target.
I remember we used to reference it when someone did something spectacularly silly with crowd control targets.

In my guild, the circle is known as "Jaffa", owing to it being round and orangey. Admittedly this tends to cause initial confusion amongst non-British members of the guild!
Vellorita Mar 4th 2010 1:22PM
In my guild, we refer to the triangle as the "panties".
Evlyxx Mar 4th 2010 9:23AM
Ah now if only we can get people to kill the assigned mark in the right order. I despair when the skull is the last mob standing despite being the primary target.
Also the moon is referred to as the toe-nail and the diamond has an alternative name that is not appropriate here!

Don't forget that you can insert a marker icon into chat by enclosing it's name in curly beavers. Ie: {skull}. Very handy for making a kill order macro.
Matt Mar 4th 2010 10:11AM
There's an image right in the article that lists all of that.

Personally, I wish they had some additional raid target icons that were just numbers. It's annoying having to say something like, "Ok...Skull, Cross, Diamond, Triangle, Moon, Square. That's your kill order."
If we could just put big red numbers over the mobs' heads, we could save a lot of time even discussing the kill order. Just kill the guy with the number "1" over his head first. Then "2."

For Rookie Tanks (or any Tank really) I'd like to suggest SkullMe, which will automatically set the skull on your current target after n seconds. This has helped me coordinate DPS during Dungeon Finder runs with random folks.
http://wow.curse.com/downloads/wow-addons/details/skull-me.aspx
DESCRIPTION,
The purpose of this addon is to simplify marking in heroics or raids. It will automatically mark your target after a set amount of seconds, allowing you to focus on more important stuff than a key binding. It can be used by a tank or a dps. It also supports a basic kill order system, and has a option to create a Deadly Boss Mods timer to show when it will mark.

Although, we have had disastrous outcomes of using this mod. if not set up right (and if dps doesnt know you are using it) and the tank likes to switch targets alot we DPS might just get confused when our kill order keeps changing.
Although that was due to a tank that forgot he had it on and had never set up the delay so it was putting up the skull as soon as he would switch targets. He then proceeded to yell at everyone for not killing who he wanted us to kill. lol
Hëx Mar 4th 2010 10:07AM
I have never had to change the default delay, which I believe is at 5 seconds. Gives me plenty of time to switch targets, gain threat, switch again, etc, until I'm back at my main marked target. Just goes to show the importance of not playing with a mods settings until you know what the consequences will be!
@WoW Mods: Thanks for cleaning up my double post, and beg AOL to give you a better commenting system. ;)

Sleutel's Suggested Mark Assignments (TM)
Skull: Kill first
X: Kill second
Circle: Kill third
Star: Shackle or Repentance
Diamond: Sap
Triangle: Banish or Roots
Moon: Polymorph, Wyvern Sting, Hibernate, or Hex
Square: Freezing Trap
Ozzard Mar 4th 2010 10:49AM
Fine until you raid with a mage *and* an ele shammy, as I used to :-). There aren't enough marks to go round, and different folks use them in different ways. Blue for freezing trap seems to be remarkably common, though.
The other thing we tend to do if operating with very few healers is to mark the tanks. Occasionally we'll use a mark for a "key player" - in the early days of doing OS, for example, we'd mark the caster who was best at dodging fire walls and tell the other casters to Watch Him And Stay Near, Dammit!
ash Mar 4th 2010 1:38PM
These pretty much line up with what I have always used. Moon has always been poly or something magical and Blue Square has been ice trap for obvious reasons. Although circle tended to get a fair amount of usage as sap and purple diamond was usually associated with some warlock ability like fear or banish. Now since no one hardly uses any CC it doesn't matter much anyway.
Sleutel Mar 4th 2010 6:55PM
@Ozzard:
Yes, the ones that I've seen be the most consistent are Square for the Freezing Trap and Moon for Polymorph. (There was even a guild on an old server of mine called Sheep the Moon.)
hsm Mar 4th 2010 9:42AM
circle is also know as the orange.. actually all of them can also be
called by color
Triangle is also the Hat of shame in our guild. Applied after some personal epic fail.
I remember when they all had jobs
Skull kill #1
X kill #2
Triangle kill #3
circle - sap
Star - shackle
Moon - sheep
diamond - banish
square - trap
Now if tab targeting only worked.
