WoW Rookie: Stay on target with raid icons
New around here? WoW Rookie points WoW's newest players to the basics of a good start in the World of Warcraft. For links to all our tips, tricks and how-to's, visit WoW.com's WoW Rookie Guide.
In your group of regulars, who's the nipple and who's the thong? Raid target icons can take a new player by surprise. Baddies look that much more terrifying with a skull icon floating over their heads -- yet all in all, it seems like a logical mechanic that you didn't happen to notice whenever it kicked in. But what about that mob over there, with something that looks like an orange nipple? And why does the party leader keep saying to hit the "thong" next?
Talk about a blast from the past ... With the death of crowd control, target icons don't get much of a workout any more. They were a staple of play, however, back in the days of huge pulls that needed to be controlled and taken down in a specific order. Icons are still used today on a limited basis in raiding and a few notoriously twitchy instance pulls, and they can make it easier to spot players or NPCs who must be protected or escorted in a crowd. Still, it's fairly likely that you can run all the way up to 80 and through the Dungeon Finder system without ever seeing more than the occasional skull or three -- and that's no good for building savvy players.
- Raid target icons make it possible to identify particular mobs and set the kill order for an encounter in an objective, unchanging fashion.
- While tanks or group leaders usually handle marking duties, anyone can set a raid target icon over a mob. Right-click on any mob's portrait and choose a symbol from the drop-down menu.
- The skull icon is almost universally set as the main DPS target. The cross (also often called X) is usually next in line ... but practice varies widely after that. Whoever marks for your group or raid should clearly state the kill order or assign players to tank/crowd control particular mobs. (If you need clarification, ASK!)
- Raid icons make it easy to spot players or NPCs (including you!) who move around a lot or need to move through a large crowd.
You'll often hear raid icons called "lucky charms," a reference to the ubiquitous kids' breakfast cereal of the same name, which is filled with little marshmallow shapes ("Hearts, stars, horseshoes, clovers and blue moons, pots of gold and rainbows, and the red balloon!"). In practice, the chewy little nuggets proved nearly impossible to identify unless you knew the jingle ... Sharing something in common with WoW's "nipples" and "thongs."
Common WoW icon parlance goes something like this:
- Yellow star Star
- Orange circle Circle, coin, nipple, condom, the orange
- Purple diamond Diamond
- Green triangle Triangle, thong
- Silver moon Moon
- Blue square Square, box
- Red X X, cross
- Skull Skull
[Edited to add a few of the more common naming suggestions. Thanks, readers!]
Advanced targeting
The easiest way to set raid icons quickly and efficiently is with keybindings. Use the game's default interface to set them to whatever keys are convenient for you. Several nifty icon add-ons such as Lucky Charms do exist. If you find yourself marking frequently and you prefer to use your keybindings for something else, investigate a good mods site like Curse or WoW Interface for more options.
Even more on-the-fly marking can be done with mouseover macros. These can become a little too detailed for WoW Rookie, but feel free to add your own favorites in the comments.

Ah. I remember those days fondly. So many demons and elementals to banish back in the day.
However, even back then, while the jobs you listed were very common, there were always a couple of groups people could pug into that had different symbols for different jobs for their own reasons.
I'd say the safest thing to do is to have a short explanation of raid symbols before using them at the beginning of a dungeon. Just to make sure everyone's on the same page.

Wow, i haven't seen this video in ages. It was done by a gal named Fyreuni from Illidan who, in real life, is/was an animator for Harvey Birdman and a few other Cartoon Network Adult Swim cartoons, back when Adult Swim was in its heyday.
She also broke up with her real life husband and started (virtually?)dating one of the officers from the guild Angry, also from Illidan due to the World of Warcraft being srs bzns.

She now does a weekly web comic. http://daily-quests.com/comic/

Lol, wow, you certainly know a lot about me, although just to be clear, it was my husband who broke up with me. I think that's as far as we need to get into that! ~_^
Thanks for featuring the vid again! I'm still planning a Lesson 2 this year! :D

imo you should do one about LoS pulls.. or different types of tanking. 'this is a bear tank, he can't put out as much threat on multiple mobs as quickly as a paladin, so give a little more time before using aoe abilities'. -_- 'this is a warrior, his aoe abilities are limited as well, but if they're skilled or overgeared they can keep hold of large amounts of adds' >.>
maybe there should just be a primer to how to dps appropriately, explaining what a threat meter is and why it's important to actually look at it and understand what the readings mean. That seems to be a main problem: no one remembers why they downloaded omen.... and they certainly don't know how to read it and they forget it is even on their screen.

@Dankie Another great idea! I have a few ideas brewing in my mind for some lessons, but I'll keep this one in mind for sure! Thanks!

I believe this vid has been featured here before, but good to see it again.

Do not ever mention 'Shackle' again. Thank you.

We use these in Naxx on Lady Wotsername's little friends. I get to stand there annoying them and then when she enrages the main tank tells me and I call out which shape has the lowest HP.
And we use them in TOC on the faction champions. "Deathgiggles, you and Kaia lock down X so he doesn't get any heals off." That's usually all I need to know about that fight. (I am a death knight Interrupt Queen and Kaia is usually our only rogue. And, in fact, our raid leader usually just calls me Giggles...)
They are also useful in guild 25-man weeklies with lots of people who don't usually raid with us, to mark the tanks so everyone knows whom to assist.

Dammit. It isn't a circle. It isn't a nipple.
It's a condom - we use it to mark shackles or polymorphs. No one wants to break a condom!
Doddilus Mar 4th 2010 2:22PM
I bind them in reverse order to F1-F8
skull = f1
x = f2
square = f3
etc
makes it real easy to mark
did the video just say star is the first dps target? on what backwards server is that?
universally skull dies first, then X, third varies quite a bit, other common marks: moon is sheep, diamond is banish, square is trap
Tankin Mar 4th 2010 2:33PM
I'm still baffled as to why people don't go down the list of icons when marking. I went into my keybindings and they're in the same order as if you right click on a target.
Star
Circle
Diamond
Triangle
Moon
Square
X
Skull
If you use the ordering provided, there's no need for discussion on kill order.
BuzzDX Mar 4th 2010 2:47PM
I have my number pad keys set up to mark targets, although I do it in the reverse of what you have. So 1=Skull, 2=X, and so forth and thats the kill order I use.
Gunmoku Mar 4th 2010 8:17PM
Great little guide, here. My guild is a fan of the classic "Stoplight" kill order; Which is Triangle (Green), Star (Yellow), and Cross (Red). From there we use Skull and whatever's left if it's a large group requiring a kill order.
On a side note, I did meet Fyreuni (the creator of the video in this article) in a PuG with the Dungeon Finder. I kindly asked her if she was "the" Fyreuni, to which she had an excited reaction. Kinda got a kick outta that, her and her guildies are great players, too. I wouldn't mind raiding with them at all.

I've been in a couple of guilds where, back in the day, we called the blue square 'box' - maybe its just an oceanic thing?
icepyro Mar 4th 2010 3:40PM
As for the article, it has always been the condom of mocking/shame in my guild as no one ever seemed to enjoy running around with a condom over their head. I've never heard the thong bit though. Also, my flatmate made it to 80 and even had some t9 before either of us saw moon. He was kicked from that group and I had to ask for him why he was kicked. Naturally it was "because he wasn't sheeping moons". We had both figured it was what to kill after skull and X.
Related: Is it possible to macro a way to target skull or better yet, X?? I've seen macros to mark them, but not target them. Sometimes once the pull happens it's hard for me to find X after Skull is dead. Well not hard, just I don't like not casting for more than a second as I try to click on the correct plate in the sea of them.
