Breakfast Topic: Loremaster for a day

That brings me to a thought. Let's say Chris "God" Metzen comes up to you on the street. He doesn't need a reason, he's Chris Metzen. He's awesome. And he says to you, he says, "Hey, I heard you like WoW lore. So I'm going to let you make a choice. You take any existing lore thread, and you tell me how to change. I can retcon whatever you want, or I can just make it go forward any way you want. You name it, I'll do it."
This is actually a pretty tough choice, but I'll throw one idea out of the mix (for me at least) right away. The Draenei retcon? I can live with it. It's not the worse retcon ever, and it can be hand waved away if you decide Kil'jaedan and Archimonde and their followers were already corrupt when Sargeras recruited them.
For me, what I'd really like to see is an embracing by the Horde of orcish culture and heroes before the Burning Legion corrupted them. One of the things that's always bothered me about Thrall is that while he says he speaks for peace, he honors the leaders of the wars against the Alliance. He wears the armor of the one of the greatest generals of those wars, and wields the hammer that killed Anduin Lothar, the greatest and most noble hero the Alliance has ever known. How can you truly say you want peace when you do that? I want Thrall to throw the Doomhammer into the Maelstrom and take off the armor. I can't believe all the oral and written tradition of the orcs is gone. Surely he can find some more ancient line of Warchiefs, Warchiefs who ruled over a more peaceful, shamanistic society, who lead the Horde only in noble wars. That is what I want to see, because that is what I believe the Horde truly needs to heal. They're too caught up in the darkest parts of their past as long as they continue to honor people like Ogrim Doomhammer and Kargath Bladefist. All that does is get them more Garroshes.
What about you? Where would you take one of WoW's lore story lines?

I would love it if the tauren explored their origins more, also i would like the origins of druidism to be deepened.
Also: Sylvanas as a lapdancer in the new troll town :P

I'd make the Arthas-Yoggy connection more obvious. Like...Yoggy's tendrils throughout Northrend wake up Arthas, starting the expansion in progress. The Scourge construct EVERYTHING out of Saronite, meaning Arthas starts hearing the Old God's whispers and starts going a lil' bit more crazy.
We kill Yoggy, and Arthas shows up at the end and absorbs HIS power into Frostmourne. Cue Arthas becoming bigger and crazier and more powerful (hence why it's harder to kill Arthas than it is to kill an Old God).
I'd also remove ToTC from the raiding progression completely. Sorry Blizz, but that was crap. Someone a few days ago suggested not bringing back Naxx either, and instead creating a kind of Naxx 2.0 and have us raid a completed Malykriss. Replace ToTC with AN, and I'm happy. AN > Ulduar > Malykriss > ICC.
And I agree with Sylvanas as a lapdancer. :D

I should note that, lorewise, it's only "harder" to kill the Lich King than Yogg-Saron because A) You're not actually killing Yogg-Saron, just knocking him out, and B) When fighting Yogg-Saron (in the in-character fashion) you've got the help of the four powerful Keepers of Ulduar.
I'm also sure that the "in-character" lorewise step-up in difficulty between Yoggy and Arthas isn't in proportion w/ the in-game gear difference. The gear requirements and tuning are a product of the game design, not the lore.
From a lore standpoint, if you were facing Yogg Saron on his own terf (meaning not in his prison that he still hasn't completely broken out of and only facing the part of him that can stick out) without the Keepers' help you would be in big trouble.

Oy don't piggy-back my post for a spot up top!
Eddy Mar 7th 2010 4:06PM
Yep. The best female leader in the game, the only one who isn't a caster of some sort and also the only one to have no romantic entanglements with men more powerful than she is, reduced to lap dancing jokes.
I was going to write a post about how I'd love to see more female leaders from factions that seem gender-blind, like the gnomes or the goblins or the draenei but I guess they'd all end up strippers too, so why bother.
malaki Mar 7th 2010 8:47PM
gnomes dont have time for females they have been too bussy trying to recapture gnomeragon and tinkering away with their little trinkets, and also putting an arcae blast right up someones ass :D
daan.leijen Mar 8th 2010 1:47AM
While it is true that Azeroth could use more female leaders, Sylvanas is NOT the kind of leader you would want to see more of. If you look at her politics, sge isn't very different from Varian Chinwrynn or "Hate McRageface" Garrosh, except that she doesn't just want to wipe out her enemies, she wants her allies dead and as forsaken too. She's actually mostly driven by revenge so it is definitely uncertain what will happen to her after Arthas' dea........
*Distracted by waistline*
Yep, lapdancer material :P
Dreyja Mar 8th 2010 4:54PM
Yes please. More actual strong female leaders that aren't homicidal cult-leaders would be awesome! ;-p

Non-Corrupted Warlocks.
They supposedly exist, but I've yet to see them anywhere in the game, and they've never played a major (or minor) part in lore as far as I know
Also, like daan.leijen said, Sylvanas as a lapdancer in the new Troll capital. Hell, they need a club.
ben Mar 7th 2010 8:51AM
I get this image in my head of Trollgore being a bouncer, a witch doctor being a bartender, and voljin hanging out with hakaar over a hooka pipe.
Ydrisselle Mar 7th 2010 9:12AM
The non-corrupt warlocks are mostly gnomes. They are curious, and they are studying demons because of that curiosity...
Deathknighty Mar 7th 2010 10:56AM
But what about the Great Wilfred Fizzlebang? He didn't seem very curious. :P
Maymer Mar 7th 2010 11:56AM
Actually, the only reason he was specced demonology was because his guild already had a destro lock.
Also, he really wanted to see if he could summon Sylvannas as a lapdancer for "Vol'jin's Crib". Let's admit it, those abominations and felguards they have just aint cutting it.
Aldarion Mar 7th 2010 1:33PM
And succubi can only be found in the VIP area :(
Wulfrixx Mar 7th 2010 3:05PM
Isn't it Deathwing that has the hooka pipe?

So thats the "old god influence" he has for being evil???
Speaking of which, why did Blizzard never make that game?
per.wa Mar 7th 2010 8:17AM
"Tempest Keep was merely a setback"...
If I had the power, juice and a willing Mister Metzen at my disposal, I'd have time spun back (yes, Metzen can surely do that) to the innocent days of TBC. And then I'd have some insignificant royalty killed over and over, instead of the reasonably cool king Kael'thas was... Perhaps Varian "the Chin" Wrynn?
fearthefireblade Mar 7th 2010 8:18AM
Pandarens instead of Goblins or Draenei.
zvermm Mar 7th 2010 11:48AM
You mean, OGRES instead of goblins in Cataclysm.
Wulfkin Mar 7th 2010 12:51PM
I strongly feel that both Pandaren and Ogres (especially the Stonemaul) need to start getting into the current lore more. I'm not sure about playable races tho. Playable Pandaren I feel would be a bit ridiculous, it doesn't fit the lore - they are an isolationist people off on an island somewhere - what interest would they have in teaming up with the Alliance or the Horde. Similarly it doesn't make much sense for the Stonemaul to be playable as they are a very small, albeit cool, faction. To put it in perspective, there have a tenth of the numbers of the Darkspear tribe.
That said, I really want Pandaren, Ogres, Murlocs and the Grimtotem Tauren all to have their invovlement in the WoW world advanced when Cataclysm lands. I have a big rant on it here: http://thebarrenschat.wordpress.com/2010/03/04/revisiting-azeroth/
If you dont want to read all that I can sum it up as: All those groups have an interesting base point for their storylines, but they never got fleshed out. Cataclysm is the perfect time to do that. Go on Blizz, you know it makes sense! ;)
