One of the good and bad aspects of an MMO is that it is a form of storytelling that does not really end in the same way that a consistent narrative does. A novel, a movie, even a single player RPG can have a climax in a way that a MMO like
World of Warcraft simply cannot. Killing the Lich King isn't the end of the story, it's merely a chapter coming to a close in a saga that just keeps rolling along. Given enough time and the momentum of such a thing becomes its own literary device, effectively, as you know you'll be facing something new before the body of your current antagonist has a chance to cool down. (Of course, since you'll be rifling through his or her pants
for some loot, how cool was it really going to get?)
We talk a lot about expansion gear resets, greens replacing epics to be replaced by blues we then replace with epics and so on. Frankly, I've come to see this as the great strength of an MMO and not something that holds you back. No matter how awesome your gear is now, no matter how epic the fights, no matter the towering evil you're defeating, tomorrow will bring new gear, new enemies, and new stories. Yes, it can be seen as a treadmill and us as hamsters running it, but it can also be seen as a ladder always going somewhere new.
So what about you? Do you like the limitless nature of the cycle, or do you want an endpoint? And what would you want it to be?

It's the limitless nature of the cycle that allows us to keep playing WoW. And end-point would mean the end of WoW, so a limitless cycle just a necessity to keep the game and the franchise going.

An* end-point

As for me, i see each gear reset help the "it continues rolling" impression
What if we would kill the lich king with lvl 60 epics?, he would have like 1m health on 10 man and we would go crazy about it
For me, each gear reset means ill get more and more epic stats on my gear

I see it more like a neverending ladder with some broken rungs (old naxx, ony 60, ZA bear mount, etc.).

The only thing I don't like about this "endless system", is the fact that every gear update it gets more powerful. It'll come to a point when a priest will have 56k HP, a Tank about 100K HP and a miniboss will have 54M in 10 man. DPS Classes will be topping the recount at 50K DPS...
It's like inflation, the numbers get ridiculous eventually. I know Blizzard have seen this, and I hope that they're working on preventing it.

WoW is limitless in its own way.
WoW follows a timeline, which has different periods which have both a beginning and an end. So Just like in real world, something new will start and just like that it will end with another something starting.
There is always and end point, like defeating the Lich King - That is the end-point of this game, but like I said, on a timeline, Blizzard can create a new beginning (Cataclysm) or continue the current period.
There could've been more Warcraft RTS games, just like The Frozen Throne came after Reign of Chaos, and more and more until Blizz screws with it and does something else.
P.S. I'm a bit tired, so what I said might copy itself or make less sense than it should...

Of couse I dont want an end of wow, thats why I am an addict :)
However, when they start giving out details of the next expansion, it always makes me abandon the game a little. I am not excited anymore about icecrown, to gather gear that I will toss away when catalicysm hits.
Especially since the next expansion is more about restart for me, I want to level new alts, new races on the renewed zones.

I would like to see death.... by cake!
Johan Forn Mar 8th 2010 8:22AM
I'll have the chicken then, please.
Guildenstern Mar 8th 2010 8:09AM
No idea about your question, but I would like to posit that Thrall and Lor'themar are wicked, world-bustingly hot in that picture.
I'll take 2 of each.
Hassashu Mar 8th 2010 8:12AM
I think the end will at some point be the defeat of Sargeras. But....i don't think Blizz is ever going to end the game's cycle if people keep playing it.
....luckily not! Let's keep going till we die!!!

Patch 15.6: "Hogger's Return"
Deep in the depths of Elwynn Forest, a new evil awakens. As does his hunger for blood. Gather 40 close allies to try to defeat this force before he conquers all of azeroth.
Experience the fun-and-easy all vehicle fighting used against all bosses in the raid
Enjoy the new epic drops available (there's only two, we were in a bit of a rush)
Defeat his fellow allies:
Kobloidion- Defender of Candles, eater of souls.
Murlockem'down- The most powerful murloc ever summoned to azeroth, (PLUS makes 90% more grlgl noices!)
And finally, Bovinenea- A cow embedded with pure demonic corruption, We hope you lake your steak medium-death.
.....okay, maybe they'll stop before that point.
Tomatketchup Mar 8th 2010 9:07AM
I can imagine.
Patch 15.5: A level 9 runs past by a small field in southwestern Elwynn. He kills some gnolls, gather some comrades and defeat Hogger. He then runs back, turns in his reward and goes on to Westfall.
Next day, patch 15.6 released: A level 9 runs past by a huge fortress in southwestern Elwynn. He gets lazor'd to hell and tries to spirit run to his corpse but the fortress shoots his spirit too. He then deletes his char.

And take character customization to a different level, with the all new dance studio!
Al Mar 8th 2010 2:46PM
Bovinenea? I believe you mean Apocalypse Cow?

I'm on both sides.
On the one hand, said 'limitless' cycle keeps things fresh, and if you're a really huge fan of the game, will keep the game interesting. Running around in Dalaran for 2 years because you maxed out your gear way too quickly isn't very appealing.
On the other, however, it feels like this cycle makes the whole game (Or at least, the gearing up part) pointless. Why waste so many hours wiping in ICC when you can get an upgrade (Read: Trinket upgrade. Darn Nevermelting Ice Crystal!) within the first 5 quests you complete in the new expansion?
Of course, after saying all that I still have to admit that I love the game. I love gearing up. Sure, within a year or two the content becomes old, but it feels good to be at the top of my game, even if momentarily.
Manadar Mar 8th 2010 8:58AM
Gear only helps you complete the encounters. I want better gear so I can go kick Arthas & c:o's ass in ICC HC. Plus I find gearing fun.
And nowadays epics are still viable in the entry raids of the next expansion. I was only in T4/T5 gear when WotLK hit but I was still tanking Naxx25 with my Pillar of Ferocity. ICC25 HC-gear won't be replaced within the 5 first quests of Cataclysm;)

Sometimes having an ending to look forward to is a good thing.
Eventually, the narrative in WoW will start to feel like one of those soap operas that has been airing 5 days a week for 25 years.
Imagine how many millions of lapsed subscribers would probably come back if WoW announced it had an ending in sight. This could be a HUGE revenue burst for Blizzard to launch the "next-gen MMO" it has been diverting many of its most seasoned developers to over the past 18 months or so.
jealouspirate Mar 8th 2010 8:24AM
I agree. I don't really want WoW to end, but with enough time the narrative will definitely suffer. Arguably, it already has (with retcons, inconsistencies and contradictions).
