Goon Squad downs Tirion Fordring
Perennial pariahs Goon Squad, Horde-side on Mal'Ganis-US, have really carved out a niche for themselves in the World of Warcraft. Well, two niches. The first is a rock-solid reputation of being the foremost trolls and griefers in the MMO market, period -- a reputation perpetuated by a community that operates mostly on word-of-mouth and lovingly crafted by the guild itself. The second is providing some of the best and most hilarious WoW videos on the internet. This one is no exception -- they managed to score a victory for the Lich King by defeating the dread paladin Fordring.
It's a rare ability, possessed by Goon Squad and a few other community figures, to be able to take the building blocks of the game experience provided by Blizzard -- strictly compartmentalized and defined by sets of incontrovertible rules -- and then cobble together something wholly new and, frankly, ridiculous out of them. You're not supposed to be able to bring together two often-'shipped faction leaders for an impromptu date. You're not supposed to be able to blow the Wintergrasp fortress wall to smithereens in a minute's time. You're certainly not supposed to be able to kill the head of the Argent Crusade who, by the way, should learn to cast Consecrate.
So, you might be asking a valid question here -- what's the point of these exercises, exactly? It's not as if Jaina and Thrall will embrace the fanfiction and shack up, and killing Tirion doesn't provide you with any loot, achievements, or any kind of tangible reward. Why do it?
It's simple. It's an exercise in power over the world, even if fleeting. It's making the rules work for them, not the other way around. We see this kind of behavior in all facets of the game, with varying levels of impact on the game and its players. Antiarc proved that rogues could transcend outdated and clunky mechanics by designing a mod that swapped their weapons for them upon hitting 5 stacks of Deadly Poison on a target, eventually forcing Blizzard to fix it. World-first kills are rife with drama over finding kinks in the armor of the encounter mechanics and tossing Saronite Bombs at them. Goon Squad shut down Theramore by taking its Flight Master on an extended spelunking trip. It's all the same concept. And every time someone performs these actions, it raises a big red flag at Blizzard -- "this is out there and we probably need to fix it." In a way, a public service is being performed even if it might not seem like it at first.
You might call it exploitation, and you wouldn't necessarily be wrong. Scientists, though, call it emergent gameplay -- that is, taking a strict set of rules and using them to produce results unintended by the rulemakers. It's the ultimate in trolling. And Goon Squad knows it. That's why they're so good at it.

Haters say it was done on a private server. Personally I couldn't care less - it's hilarious either way.

>private server
you dont know much about the goons then...

Yawn

That was pretty amusing. As much as the chaos is bad for the game, I do regret missing some of the epic moments that can happen from bringing powerful mobs into contact with other powerful mobs.

Also, Tirion doesn't use Consecrate because then he COULD handle that on his own. And then we'd hear more calls for nerfs (Paladins can solo Precious!), and Tirion just figured he'd save us all the hassle.
He's a good man that way.

Why are we publicizing these... people? I'm fine with people trying new stuff in game but it's their reputation as complete jerks that makes me wish we'd not promote them.
I'm sure I"ll get harshed for saying that but I really, REALLY hate jerks.
That being said, there is nothing inherently jerky about this video so - good on 'em. :)
Hollow Leviathan Mar 8th 2010 8:30PM
I want to agree with you, but they used the music Hell March 2 on one of their videos.
I can't go against that.
Al Mar 8th 2010 8:30PM
Seconded.
Scrolling down, saw their name. "Ah yes, the twats who enter threads about split Oceanic maintenance and talk crap about rolling alts en masse just to be dicks should it ever happen."

I think the big reason Goon Squad gets positive publicity like this is that most of their most famous actions are purely for fun and don't effect the game much. Getting a world first Tirion kill through inconsistencies in game mechanics is a lot better than getting a world first 25 man Lich King kill by using inconsistencies in game mechanics.
Dreyja Mar 8th 2010 8:55PM
I agree w/ you there Neirin, it really is the OTHER stuff that makes me wish they'd slip into obscurity. ;)
Cameron Mar 8th 2010 9:11PM
They get publicity because they're creative and funny. If all were right in the world, the people who would fade into obscurity would be the ones who get seriously bent out of shape about a guild killing a pretend internet elf in a video game. A bit of dismissive levity never hurt anyone.

I hate jerks, but I absolutely love goon squad.
As far as I have seen they don't do anything that breaks the game.
Things like stealing flight masters and making opposite factions play time a living hell is to me, the best for of PvP imaginable. Much better than standing in line to steal the enemies flag or fight over being the ones to scoop horse dung from the stables.
I wouldn't join their guild, but I would salute them in Dalaran.
Dreyja Mar 8th 2010 9:19PM
Yes well, I love funny but I don't find it funny when people are blatantly cruel to other people. Face it, the people on the other end of the internet are PEOPLE. ;)
There is pvp reality then there is guild-sanctioned ass-hat-ery (and yes, that's a technical term). ;-p
Again, I'm not saying anything specific about this video it's pretty funny.

When I first started playing world of warcraft back in 2006 I was on Mal'Ganis as alliance. It was pretty bad. Horde on that realm outnumbered us 3 to 1 and consistently I would be ganked, the mailbox would be covered in Goon Squad alts, the flight master in Ironforge would be dead, etcetera. But the fact is, even though I was one of the people who they (and guilds like them) were being "cruel" to I really didn't mind. It gave me something to do for an hour, and took my mind off the monotony of leveling. It was funny. I realize where you are coming from, and its great you are sticking up for these people (I realm transferred during BC) but its really not that bad. People need to relax about WoW, it's not like your character is going to lose all his stuff and you have to start from square one. He will still be there when you log back on.

I'm a big fan of the music selection.

A lot of people may think Goon Squad used a private server to aggro Tirion for this kill.
I choose to believe that he aggroed them on his own due to them being such a collection of a-holes.
