Raid Rx: Healing Blood Queen Lana'thel

You'll find the Blood Queen at the top floor above the chamber that has the Blood Princes. She is the head boss in the wing and is one of the few encounters in the instance that drops tier 10 tokens. This will be a high stress encounter for healers as there is so much going on at once.
Piece of cake? Oh you bet. The strain will be on your DPS players to take her down before the enrage. For us healers, we just have to stand on our head and balance raid health for about 5 minutes. You can check out the overview of the Blood Queen encounter here if you're not sure about the overall mechanics of the fight. This post is strictly meant for the healers so it is best to have an understanding of the encounter.
Preparation
Personally, I like to utilize 6 healers for the encounter. In fact, if your raid group just started working on her, I highly recommend it. I like to set my healers up in a circular formation around the center of the room. You'll notice a patterned circle in the middle of the chamber. Organize your healers around that with the tank healers closest to where the Blood Queen will be tanked (this should go without saying). So long as they are equally spaced out from each other, they won't need to worry about Twilight Bloodbolts much.Ground phase
2 tank healers should be enough to keep your tank and Blood Mirror soaker alive. A nice mix of holy priests, shamans and druids will round out the raid as well. And contrary to popular belief, a raid healing discipline priest will have a field day covering the raid. Casting Power Word: Shield will trigger a train load of absorptions. I actually gave my discipline priest specific instructions: Shield the healers, shield anyone targeted by Swarming Shadows, and shield players under the effect of Pact of the Darkfallen. Don't forget that the Shroud of Sorrow aura is going to deal constant damage to the entire raid.Swarming Shadows shouldn't be too big of an issue if you get it. Take the path of least resistance to the wall (or run in a straight line toward some area where there are no tanks). Healers should be capable of keeping themselves alive when on the run and to not expect anyone else healing them. If your other healers can spare it, a HoT or two will be more than enough to ensure your survivability. Just don't try to write a message with Shadows.
If a DPS player gets Swarming Shadows, it is becomes the responsibility of the healers closest to them to keep them alive. I can't expect another healer on the other side of the room to do it if they suddenly run out of range.
Pact of the Darkfallen is a little trickier especially on hard modes. As they run in, healers should cover them with HoTs and shields in order to stabilize them. When I did this fight on hard mode, I eventually realized that I had to keep my Circle of Healing held back in reserve specifically for Pacts. They were taking damage at such a high rate that I struggled a bit in order to keep them alive. I realized then that I wasn't supposed to keep them all topped off. I was supposed to keep them alive long enough for them to get within a yard of each other to shake off the Pact.
As a holy priest, this meant targeting the first player with a Renew, the second player with a Power Word: Shield, and the final player with a Circle of Healing (and a quick prayer hoping all of them would benefit). Flash Heal spam did the rest.
As a discipline priest, hit them all with shields. Follow up on the player who has lowest health with a Penance.
For shamans, a quick Riptide on one of them with a Chain Heal as they get closer together should do it. Nature's Swiftness and a Healing Wave in case anyone gets too low.
If there is a resto druid taking care of Pacts, have them maintain HoTs on the affected players. A Wild Growth as they all come closer together should do the trick as well.
Air phase
This is arguably one of the harder phases to get through. Tremor totems should be dropped several seconds before the air phase kicks in. Fear Wards should go up several seconds after the encounter starts so that you can use Fear Ward again on the second air phase. If you have shadow priests, ask them to toss it on other healers (and bonus points if those other healers can dispel off Fear). When the Blood Queen casts fear, you have a few seconds before she runs to the middle and jumps up in the air doing her spinning Bloodbolt attack. You can get off 2-3 dispels at most. Use them on other healers who didn't have Fear Ward or didn't get a Tremor totem. At this point, any defensive cooldowns that are available should be used. Yes, this includes the defensive cooldowns of DPS players (Ice Blocks and the sort). My raid runs with 2 healing priests and 2 shadow priests. I'll set two Divine Hymns to go off during the first air phase and the next two to go off during the second air phase. With 5 paladins, I ask 1 of the holy paladins to use their Aura Mastery on the first air phase and the other holy paladin uses theirs on the second.
Eventually she'll land and the ground phase starts all over again.
The fight gets progressively easier as more and more players become bitten. Any bitten players who deal damage will gain a portion of the damage dealt back as health.
Vampiric bite
There might come a time when you are to be on the receiving end of a Vampiric Bite. The bite grants Essence of the Blood Queen (which sadly does not increase healing done by 100%). Normally, DPS players have assigned biting target. But sometimes, it isn't always possible for them to go after their targets. Maybe they died or perhaps they're running away with a Swarming Shadows chasing them. Whatever the case, be prepared to be bitten. If those raiders wait too long to bite someone, they'll eventually become mind controlled. So if you are bitten, you wait your minute and look for a free person nearby that you can bite. All in all, a fairly easy encounter for healers (conceptually). Most of the challenge will come during the air phase when trying to do the delicate job of keeping yourself alive and keeping the raid alive. If you can master that without any casualties at all, you'll be well on your way to scoring another kill in Icecrown.

The bolts during the airphase are Spellshadow damage, not Shadow. Chaining Shadow AMs doesn't have much of an effect on the damage taken. Your paladins should be using AM on cooldown during the whole fight, instead of AMing airphase, you should just have a paladin casting divine sacrifice for each phase.

You can actually two heal this on ten man. It's not easy but it is possible. Myself (Holy Pally) and a Shaman did it. The way we went about it is he stood in with melee and chain healed keeping everyone in that radius keeping them alive. I would throw heals between three ranged dps (FoL) myself and the off tank. Keep beacon up or its over. If two people got linked they would run to the middle of the room and meet up on the diamond clearing the debuff. A Mod will guide your bites so its very easy to manage that. Make sure you have shadow resist or the aura up as it makes the aoe dmg very tame. Also chain judgements of light to cut down the raid dmg further.
Again difficult to do but after getting comfortable with the flow of dmg it becomes easier and makes the fight go considerably faster.
Good Luck

That's great to know. I two-heal most of our ICC as a Disc priest with a shaman, though we're going to try an offspec third healer for our first couple of Queen attempts.

Resto druids are amazing on this fight. 2 haste-capped druids can cover the entire raid in Rejuvs and really stabilize things nicely. In 10 man glyph rapid rejuv so the 2-second ticks correspond to the 2 second damage ticks. In 25 man do not glyph rapid rejuv to maximize coverage. I love this fight on my druid. It's like the Patchwerk of raid healing.

I just stand there casting rejuv waving my epeen around.

You are making the sap run to my tree's wood!
Sounds like real fun!

Holy priest shield absorbs for basically nothing. It's not like Renew has a cooldown, use it on the second player too.

Especially since you say in the article, "I actually gave my discipline priest specific instructions... shield players under the effect of Pact of the Darkfallen." Holy priests putting shields on players taking burst damage make Disc priests cry!

Reading the healing strats posted on the site and in the comments, I'm sometimes baffled by how you healers handle the stress of some fights. My gf started healing on her priest about two weeks ago. Heroics are fine, but after every raid, she'll ask me for tips on how to improve -- and I have no clue what to tell her. Healers, where can I direct her for helpful reading?! What are some good healer and/or priest blogs for a new raider?

I find it amusing that you asked this in Matt Low's column.
So easy answer:
World of Matticus and PlusHeal
I'd suggest Elitist Jerks but honestly I don't happen to think their min-maxing approach works as well for healing. Healing isn't an exact science; you have to figure out what works best for you.
Your girlfriend might also want to start looking at World of Logs reports for raids and comparing her performance to a more experienced player of the same class and spec in the raid (if there is one). That would give her an idea of if she's using her spells effectively.

I play a healing Priest - http://eu.wowarmory.com/character-sheet.xml?r=Darkmoon+Faire&cn=Posix - The best advice I ever received was heal before they take damage. For example, if you know a DPS is about the get hit by a Blood Beast, start casting so they're healed as soon as they take the damage.
On the two dogs in the plague wing you should be able to sync your Prayer of Healing with Decimate, again so as soon as the group takes damage they're all healed for about 5k+ each. This helps to ease the load on the other healers. If you're tank healing in Disc, then it's all about Shields, Renews and PoM.. I was testing out cooldowns in IF the other day, and I worked out that I could cast 5 GCD spells in the time it takes for Penance to come off CD, so I can do Penance, 5 Flash Heals and then Penance would be ready again. This sort of knowledge can save lives in raids, knowing when things are about to come off cooldown and using them at the right time, on the right people.

How do you get your DPS to avoid randomly running into each other on Air Phase and stacking 2 or 3 shadow bolts that nicely results in a "wipe it up" phase immediatly afterwards?
What is the "Mod" addon that handles the bite sequence for you?
Dragon Mar 11th 2010 7:50PM
Addon is

You should be able to do it. I love Disc priest such great healers. The only fight we have not two healed is Lich King since we have not had that many attempts on him as of yet. The rest of the fights we have two healed easily. We even run a single healer sometimes lol (Saurfang).
I'd make a note that your DPS has to be solid because obviously the more time that passes the more chances the rng can gib you. When one of the healers has to run out and drop fire on teh sides of the room it can be quite entertaining. Downing the boss quickly will help you avoid this happening multiple times.

This is one of those fights were it is exponentially easier on 10man than 25 man due to space.
FYI Matt, as a disc priest, you should be easily getting off a mass dispel on the raid during the fear.
Like festegut 25, we like to assign healers a particular group. LIke caster group 1 left side with a raid healer. Caster group 2 right side with another raid healer. A resto shaman on melee and a druid float healing. By having controled healing, it removes alot of the stress as DPS have a place they should be standing and healers are responsible for a particular group.
serrif Mar 12th 2010 2:56AM
5 healers is another viable option. We've done this with 1 of each spec, and then also with hpally, tree, 2 hpriests, and a disc priest. Once your dps learns to spread out properly for air phase, and how to run to the center/to the walls, it's just a matter of not messing up the bites, and that's more of a DPS job than a healer job. Just stick to your role and you'll be fine (i.e. if you're a resto druid with a shammy in the raid and JoL is up on the raid, don't snipe heals on the melee, or if you're a disc priest, make sure to react to pact/shadows/bloodbolts as appropriate, or if you're a holy pally, don't jump off the tanks until air phase.)
Badger Mar 12th 2010 10:02AM
Our guild has this nicely on farm, as Seeks above mentions, Holy Pally and Resto Shaman work very nicely for this.
As a Resto Shaman this fight really shines for our 4p T10. The HoT kicks in almost constantly and the fight becomes an exercise in spamming chain heal as fast as your connection/ haste will allow. A lovely fight to raid heal imo, challenging and loads to heal, not the usual nothing...
nothing...
nothing....

So I am the heal leader for my guild. We have BQ on farm, no prob, and are working on Arthas 25 currently. All going according to plan, great heal team yada yada. What I am wondering is, any advice on utilizing/learning about Disc Priests. I have a pretty solid grasp on utilizing every class BUT them. In part I think its because I am one of two (sometimes 3) Holy Paladins so we never hurt for tank heals. How do I effectively use Discs with all their bubbles and what not in a raid healing capacity (the advice above was very useful btw, definitely going to try letting my disc preist actually heal disc instead of holy for once heh).
