What the fans want from BlizzCon 2010

In this installment of WoW.com's guest writer program, we welcome a handful of authors to share their thoughts on what is a rumored BlizzCon 2010 this October.
BlizzCon has become one of the premier gaming events each year, attracting folks of every different walk of life from every corner of the globe. In 2009 Chris Metzen stood on stage and to thunderous fire announced World of Warcraft: Cataclysm. The expectations set for future BlizzCon are nothing less than spectacular; reading some of the well thought out opinions, you can see what your fellow WoWers want to see at BlizzCon 2010...
Darcy Zalewski (Better known to some as Syrana)
I went to BlizzCon in 2009 for the first time and saw a lot of great stuff. Since I've experienced it once, now I have some things I'd like to request -- nay, demand -- to see this year. I want to see someone in a Pandaren Monk costume and I want them to go all out with it. I also want to see some updates regarding the Warcraft movie. Then there's the next-gen MMO Blizzard is working on. I hope they'll show some concept art and maybe a demo of this. Lastly, I want Mountain Dew in the vending machines. The only Dew available was at the end of a long concession line (the machines gave Pepsi no matter what button you pushed!). The developer panels taunted me with their untouched bottles of sweet nectar.

What I would really like to see at BlizzCon 2010 is a dungeons and raids panel dealing with the design philosophy of the dungeons of Cataclysm or of the design teams "favorite" dungeons of all time (dependant on the timing of BlizzCon and the release of Cataclysm). We got a look at the "how" of dungeon and raid design in 2009, but a panel going into the "why" would be interesting. It could be run with a panel of designers showing a fly-through, giving commentary and pointing out features and elements that make the individual dungeons stand out from the pack. To one-up this, they could have some of the team play through a dungeon, live, while the panel delivers a "director's commentary," perhaps with Ghostcrawler playing a retribution paladin.

With Blizzard requiring all players to 'upgrade' their accounts to Battle.net they have provided themselves with an excellent tool in the tricky task of herding WoW players to whatever their next MMO project is. When they make their next project public, which may very well be at BlizzCon 2010, I'm interested in seeing what their strategy is for making the transition between WoW and the future of Blizzard's financial success. Will they be able to stay atop the MMO market or will they lose their audience to a rival company?

Two words. New MMO. Is MMO a word? It's actually an acronym, so maybe I should say it's four words, but that's less dramatic. Regardless, I'm really hoping we get some news on the new project they've got in the works at Blizzard. It's not related to any of their other properties, so I'm dying to know more about it. Is it something that could draw me away from WoW? Is it something more serious or more light than Warcraft is? Will there be ponies? We've already got a lot to look forward to with Starcraft II and Cataclysm in 2010, and Diablo III in the not too distant future, but we know almost nothing about this new MMO. Blizzard needs to drop some information on this and get us all salivating over their next big thing.

What do I want? More of the same. Let's be honest here. Blizzard's main strength is polish. They take the acceptable, the tested, the mundane, and upgrade it to the next level, thus creating a brand new industry standard for others to aspire to. Since 2005, BlizzCon has more or less followed an exact formula: New game announcement; public play of upcoming titles; tough Q&As, answering some difficult questions from players regarding the world's most popular titles; and, of course, the goody bag. No tricks, no shenanigans, just high quality sessions that form a dialog between the company and us, the fans. The formula works, and I want the formula to stay.
World of Warcraft: Cataclysm will destroy Azeroth as we know it. Nothing will be the same. In WoW.com's Guide to Cataclysm you can find out everything you need to know about WoW's third expansion. From Goblins and Worgens to Mastery and Guild changes, it's all there for your cataclysmic enjoyment.Filed under: BlizzCon, Guest Posts

Want to hear more definite news about the infinity ward + blizzard, COD MMO for PC and xbox360.
Want them to not whore out wow to sell other blizzard stuff.
Want less collector's type in-game stuff you can only get if your willing to spend mad cash on travel and lodging and event tickets.
Want to hear that they are going to make cataclysm truly compatible with 7 and quad core.
Want them to make jay mohr raid ulduar hard mode and then make jokes!
And choose a costume contest winner based on creativity not budget of cleavage

"Want them to not whore out wow to sell other blizzard stuff."
You do realise that WoW was not what made blizzard famouse in the first place right? Sure it has the most subscriptions but blizz has yet to put out a title that sells less than a million copies (unless you include the Silicon & Synapse days). Every game that they have released has had its own very respectable following. So no, they are not "whoring out WoW." The other games speak for themselves.

Oh, and I almost forgot.
The Guinness world record largest pinata to be slowly pummeled to death by wiffle bats stuffed full of plushies and game time cards!
Bomlex Mar 11th 2010 3:12PM
Hmm my head is spinning on the thoughts of what the next MMO will be think how much they've learnt creating wow what it is today, i reckon that we will see alot of similarities but with alot better graphics and more story focused to get people sucked into the new IP ..... there will be a nice cinematic trailer that will make everyone go :O.

I highly doubt the new MMO will be anything similar to WoW. They don't need to cut into the wow community to get a huge new fanbase. They could easily make a hard core non-care bear pvp game(look at darkfall online). Blizzard certainly doesn't have the entire MMO market covered.
Vandersveldt Mar 11th 2010 6:16PM
oh god yes pls! Not necessarily the PvP thing, but a new hardcore mmo would please everyone! It would help those of us that joined WoW because we heard it was a hard, demanding game, by giving us that back. It would help those tired of hearing us complain about how easy WoW is by.... well we'll stop complaining ^_^ win/win
kunukia Mar 11th 2010 3:13PM
I want to be able to go. :(
Chris S Mar 11th 2010 3:37PM
I just want to be able to go...
cui_h_1999 Mar 11th 2010 3:43PM
What do I want to see...
25 Man Live Raid Tournament
Top 3 EU, Top 3 US, Top 2 Other
Ensidia, Paragon, For the Horde
Exodus, Deux Vox, Blood Legion
Stars (TW#1), The Zenith Clan (KR#1)
The Tournament - "Difficult" raid fights, like what Premonition had, but with Vanilla and TBC bosses scaled to Icecrown boss stats, and with even more difficulty. Each guild gets a random mix of raid bosses, 3-5 bosses at a time.
Example Fights:
Gluth, Buru, Muru
Twin Valks, Twin Emps, Eredar Twins
Illidari Council, Faction Champs, High King Maulgaredit & His crew, Four Horsemen
Nefarion, Nightbane, Emeriss, Onyxia
Finally, all 8 guilds face Hogger...at once :D
cui_h_1999 Mar 11th 2010 3:44PM
And of course, a PVP tournament between all those guilds.
Marathal Mar 24th 2010 10:55AM
LOL.....25 man heroic Hogger raid. Scale up everything in Elwyn to level 82 elites and drop in Hogger as a ?? with 15,000k HP's

How about Blizzard and its staff take notice of the European gamers?
In general, our guilds beat their content faster than the Americans, we pay more for the right to play the game than the Americans, and (I don't know if this is in fact correct) but I would imagine more of people in Europe subscribe to the game than in America.
Yet, our forums rarely get any contact from Blizzard, compared to our cousins across the ocean anyway, we don't get the whole 'beat blizzard staff at pvp', and if we want to go to blizzcon we have to travel all the way to the states, which is a total joke.
Why not have it in Europe one year, and America the next, and alternate between them?
Hanannas Mar 12th 2010 1:51AM
^^^This sooo much!
We want BlizzCon in Europe!
OfieshK Mar 12th 2010 6:36AM
I was under the impression that blizzard didnt distribute wow over there, doesnt some other company do the hosting and distribution, like were always hearing about in Asia?
I think its funny to hear a European Gamer complaining about staff attention. Most of the time our blue trackers get data from euro forums because the staff over there is much better about updating you guys and answering real questions.
We have more subscriptions, but you guys have WAY more raiders! At least progression raiders. I always attributed this to attitude, the average American gamer loads into a game hating the others playing and is desperate to demonstrate a little higher value, So i just assume teamwork is easier to come by and more effective in Europe!
I won't go to a blizz con in Anaheim, but i would LOVE to go to a blizzcon in Copenhagen

I'd like to see the pay-per-view option available to non-Directv subscribers. I have Dish Network, and I'm sure as hell not going to pay to switch to an (in my opinion) inferior sat company. Cable subscribers are getting screwed on this, as well.
Eric J Mar 11th 2010 4:33PM
I agree on this one. I was annoyed by the decision they made to offer this with DirecTV...
Drakkenfyre Mar 11th 2010 4:49PM
You do know last year you could pay, and watch online, right?
Aitron Mar 11th 2010 5:33PM
Very much aware of that fact. I'm also aware of the limitations of my internet connection. I find no enjoyment in watching a streaming feed that has to pause every 10 seconds to buffer. Its a step in the right direction on Blizz's part, but there really does need to be more options available.
Drakkenfyre Mar 11th 2010 5:49PM
If it makes you feel even better, even their online feed had problems unrelated to your bandwidth speed.
