WoW Rookie: What's "move out of the fire" in your language?

If you use the Dungeon Finder with any regularity, you're likely to eventually find yourself grouped with a player who speaks a different language. World of Warcraft is localized (translated) to nearly a dozen different languages, including two versions of English (USA and EU), French, German, Spanish, Russian, Korean and two versions of Chinese. While U.S. and Oceanic players can generally count on groupmates to speak English, things can be quite different elsewhere in the world. Individual Latin American and EU realms tend to attract groups of players from particular areas -- Brazilians on one server, Hungarians gathered on another, Italians dominating still another.
Many players welcome the language barrier as an opportunity to polish their language skills. Still, how do you coordinate your way through a tricky pull with someone who doesn't speak a word of your language?
Let's crowdsource this issue. We've compiled a list of common terms you might use in a PUG. We'd like you to list your translations in the comments, if you are fluent in another language. We're not going to cover Russian, Korean or Chinese, since those players generally do not cross paths with Western players. Please keep your suggestions brief; simplicity trumps elegance. If you'd like to see phrases we didn't include, feel free to suggest them, but keep in mind we're sticking with the basics. We'll compile the list and create a starter guide in next week's Rookie column.

Might want to try that one again, I think Babelfish had a few critical errors while translating that. [/dry]

Tushar Bharadia Mar 11th 2010 12:51PM
We weren't taught Spanish at school (it's more of an American thing, and I'm a Brit), but I do recognize the words "pendejo" and "culo", so you get +1.

evestraw: yeah, good job pushing that through babelfish. About half of them are correct, the rest are mistranslations bordering on nonsense.
The220 Mar 11th 2010 2:13PM
the dutch translations are perfect.
btw babelfish and google translate are no substitutions for learning a language. they do about a 33% job at translating something.
Lupius Mar 11th 2010 2:14PM
Divine Spirit gets translated to Holy Ghost? You Europeans certainly like to get biblical.
And on behalf of hunters at large, I resent that the phrase "please turn off aspect" made the list.
Zdouse Mar 11th 2010 3:26PM
Permoves ex incendiam
Tsani Mar 11th 2010 6:21PM
@ Lupius: It only becomes Holy Ghost when you do a literal word for word translation, no bible needed just *cough* Babelfish *hack*. In the same manner Turn Undead will translate back to Become Undead.
Aspect of the Pack and tanking & melee in general do not play nice together. You'd be surprised how many of our fellow hunters have NOT learned that lesson after 5 years. Especially when dealing with a tank-on-a-clock or after a run back through part of an instance.
Grimwolf Mar 12th 2010 7:10AM
The Dutch translation is nice and all but I've yet to encounter a Dutch person who didn't speak English flawlessly.
Arodiel Mar 12th 2010 10:57AM
Dutch borrows tonnes of words from English - I've done running translations for other players (obviously one of the 10 people in all of NL that doesn't speak English) and I just use the regular spell names. Easier to find on bars that way too.
Also:
* Straight : hetero
Am I the only one that noticed this one?
evestraw Mar 12th 2010 1:32PM
its not babelfish
at straight i couldnt resist. and wel we pretty mutch use the english words anyway
and quite honest the dutch do have a word for healing but rather use healing in game.
and names of the buffs shouldnt be translated because they play on the enlish language pack
we wouldnt translate pull in game. would be rukken or trekken i gues, what also pretty mutch means spanking your monkey.
if there was a dutch localization of the game, the dutch players wouldnt like to have the name of the buffs translated. (dutch often sounds kinda lame , and in movies the voice acting sucks),
and because we suck in voice acting we just subtitle pretty mutch everything learning english from tv since we are like 8 or whatever
Items are voorwerpen. but in game we would still just call them items

Yo quiero Taco Bell.
astromoose Mar 11th 2010 11:12AM
I'd love to see some translation
thawedtheorc Mar 11th 2010 11:13AM
Hello = Wassup hookers
Move out of the fire = Wake up or get an addon fool
Let the tank pull = We have an OT Boomkin
Bio = Perc-O-latin' here.. hold on
I don't know = Beats me
Yes = Sho'nuf
Don't pull aggro = Put your tank on focus, attack what the tank attacks and good Lord get a threat meter.. I personally like Skada because it also acts as my other meters.. which you should never post or worry about in 5 mans
thawedtheorc Mar 11th 2010 11:18AM
That is how some of us hicks speak here in GA
Arrowsmith Mar 11th 2010 12:02PM
No, no, some of us from Georgia REALLY don't speak like that.
Remember kids, not everyone from the same state speaks the same way.
