PC Gamer UK gives you 50 reasons to play Cataclysm

Issue 212 of PC Gamer UK has hit the stands, and includes a fascinating six-page article with fifty reasons why lapsed subscribers should probably return to Azeroth. Forget the lapsed subscribers, there's enough information in here for current subscribers to drool over with unbridled glee. For those of you on this side of the pond, some highlights from the article. We requested comment from PC Gamer as to whether this information came directly from Blizzard, but we haven't yet received a response, so keep that in mind as we cover the highlights:
Reason number twelve: Cataclysm chooses fun over efficiency. The talent trees will be completely redone, something we've covered a little with previous posts on the new mastery system that will be made available. A quote from Tom Chilton states "I'd expect to see a further pruning of critical class buffs and debuffs, because it's still a little more restrictive than what we'd like to see. A lot of what Mastery and the talent changes are about is making sure that the choices players make about their character are interesting. Hopefully that will add character depth without making the game more complex."

Reason number twenty seven: Thrall is off. According to the article, Warchief Thrall will leave Orgrimmar to take up a 'meta-position' as Guardian of Tirisfal, a position currently held in the comics by Med'an, the son of Garona Halforcen and the former Guardian Medivh. His replacement? Overseer Garrosh Hellscream, leader of the Horde expedition in Northrend.

Reason number thirty-one: There's a new emphasis on raiding. The reason the new level cap is only five levels is so that designers could concentrate on getting more endgame content ready for the launch. According to the article, there will be four new raid dungeons and eight heroics open from the start.

Reason number forty-three: You'll be back at Blackrock. In Cataclysm, Deathwing's return as the head of the Black Dragonflight will stir up more trouble under the mountain. According to the article, the new raid dungeon Blackwing Descent will see you face off against Nefarian, alongside a new five-man instance, Blackrock Caverns. Nefarian? Apparently that whole bit with his head on a pike was... merely a setback.
Reason number forty-six: Wintergrasp's getting a sequel. The new world PvP zone in Cataclysm is the Isle of Tol'Barad, an off-shore prison policed by mages from Dalaran and Stormwind, but its main purpose is to host faction level battles between Alliance and Horde. When the battle for control of Tol'Barad is over, it will become a daily quest hub similar to the Isle of Quel'Danas, which the designers are hoping will encourage yet more fighting. "We thought that when the battle wasn't going on in Wintergrasp, it would be a good environment for spontaneous world PvP," Chilton explains, "But the way the Lich King economy developed players didn't stay after the battles to farm for primals. What we're trying to do is meld the idea of Wintergrasp with the Isle of Quel'Danas. That felt like that players were naturally there and had activities they wanted to do, and PvP spontaneously happened without us needing to force it."
There are plenty more reasons, and a lot more information in the article -- Issue 212 is currently available on newstands in the UK, or if you don't happen to be on that side of the ocean, they've made issues available online for purchase.

There is something wrong with Hellscream, executing Cairne? That is just wrong.
busuan Mar 12th 2010 6:18PM
Wrong?
Hellscream and da Horde never do anything wrong!
Hangk Mar 12th 2010 6:32PM
Of course the Horde never does anything wrong. They somehow manage to all be incredibly badass scary mother-----, without ever so much as harming a fly. Because antihero archetypes are all about being totally nice to everyone, always, especially when you're being SUCH AN INCREDIBLE BADASS.
"Draenic genocide? The who what now? Never heard of it. Hey, did we mention that we're incredible badasses?"

Patch 4.0: Thrall leaves, Garrosh executes Cairne for "treason" and pisses off the blood elves and forsaken. And there was much weeping.
Patch 4.1: Saurfang cleaves Garrosh in twain. And there was much rejoicing.
Patch 4.2: With the introduction of the orc paladin class/race combo, Saurfang resurrects Cairne and Cairne Warstomps Magatha into a fine paste. And the and the people did feast upon the lambs, and sloths, and carp, and anchovies, and orangutans, and breakfast cereals, and fruit bats, and large...
Patch 4.3: Varian executes Fandral for being a douche, and everyone starts liking him a lot more. And everything is now right in Azeroth.

I'm going to give Blizz the benefit of the doubt, let them work the story like they do. There may be a lot more to it than meets the eye, and we'll just have to let the story unfold.
But, seriously, after almost five years of playing WoW, going through the ebbs and flows of nerfs and buffs, having seen great changes and some not so great changes, I've never once declared a desire to quit the game.
Killing Cairne may be what makes me stop. Seriously, the idea of killing a Faction leader because some poorly written half-assed pup has daddy issues is just stupid.
And that really brings me to another point: why Garrosh?
He's one of the absolute worst characters in the game. I don't understand the love for Grom Hellscream, let alone his moronic son. Grom failed his people, not once, but twice. Made the same bad decision twice. And yet the Horde goes "Oh well it's just Grom!" and all is fine. Clearly rational thinking doesn't run in the family.
If anyone of the Horde deserves execution, it's Garrosh. I mean, Sylvanas isn't exactly a paragon of good, but at least she's not a moron about it.
Garrosh and Wrynn both are pitiful excuses for characters. I want to see the WAR in Warcraft brought back, but not if it means using meatheads who use stereotypical banter to express how damned angry they are at each other. And when the leader of the Alliance is a racist idiot and the leader of the Horde is a bloodthirsty bigot, I just can't take place on either one's faction.
Good thing SW: Old Republic is looking fantastic.
Saint Mar 12th 2010 6:51PM
Also, talking about Wrynn, I've got to confess something.
I've never played Alliance. Ever. No interest in them. A lot less interest with the introduction of Wrynn and his bigotry.
But when one of my guildies told me the Deathbringer Saurfang encounter's intro is much, much shorter on Alliance, I had to check it out.
And what I saw blew me away. Not only was Varian Wrynn not acting like a total dick, he was actually acting, very, very honorably. Now if they could make his hatred for the Horde stem from more than petty racism and an inability to let go of past mistakes, I might actually take a liking to the guy.
But that's still a big if.
Vendric Mar 12th 2010 7:05PM
I voted for Basic Campfire.
Kragragh Mar 12th 2010 7:08PM
Saint - you do understand that after he kills Cairne there's more story, right? Calm down and let the story unfold. They can screw shit up sometimes but have a little faith.
Saint Mar 12th 2010 7:19PM
@Kragragh: (Fun to say name by the way) Yeah, I get that, quoting my own post:
"I'm going to give Blizz the benefit of the doubt, let them work the story like they do. There may be a lot more to it than meets the eye, and we'll just have to let the story unfold."
I know there's more to it, this is my first fictional story. But the idea is so absurd it really has me considering my future in the game.
It's too early to be certain, but it strikes me as if the writing staff at Blizzard have hired some of the writers for Heroes.
Saint Mar 12th 2010 7:20PM
Rather, this isn't* my first fictional story.
Arashikou Mar 12th 2010 7:23PM
@Saint
Unless we're playing right into their hands by hating our main faction leaders. Wouldn't be the first game where Blizz has put imbeciles and detestable people in power just so they can knock them down for the purpose of the story.
Saint Mar 12th 2010 7:29PM
This is true.
dodgeballer2005 Mar 12th 2010 8:50PM
"And when the leader of the Alliance is a racist idiot and the leader of the Horde is a bloodthirsty bigot, I just can't take place on either one's faction."
This part made me laugh, because I think you have those two reversed.
Arizor Mar 12th 2010 9:04PM
@Terethall
Hehe. And on the count of three. Not two, not four and definately not five. Thrice counted and once the third number be reached, thout shalt lobeth thy Holy Hand Grenade.
(Para-phrasing from memory)
Oh brave sir robin...
Chief Bloodhoof Mar 12th 2010 9:10PM
HE DOES WHAT?!?!?!!?
Chief Bloodhoof Mar 12th 2010 9:25PM
Fine. Dammit. I had hoped to remain a noble and good bull in my old age, but it appears I will have to take steps now.
I will return, oh yes, I will. And when I do, I will give a rye chuckle as I state "Garrosh Hellscream was merely a set back."
Oh yes, I will return, and on that day I will crush Garrosh and instill a true leader among for the Horde. Abesik Kampfyre will rule the Horde in a blaze of glory.
notos Mar 12th 2010 9:28PM
@saint about Varian
have you read Varian's Lore?
*An half-orc Killed his Father (Garona)
*Orcs Destroyed his Country
*Orcs Enslaved him and forced him to work as a gladiator
*In the Battle for undercity Quest he sees what the forsaken have done to his Countrymen
yeah Thrall suffered a similar fate but he had Taretha to be aware that not all humans where dickheads Varian did not have such thing.
Angus Mar 12th 2010 10:10PM
Notos:
*A half-Draenei Killed his Father (Garona)
*Eredar sent the Horde to destroy his country after corrupting them to get at the Draenei.
*Orcs Enslaved him and forced him to work as a gladiator (okay, this one is completely their fault for being jerks... or is it...)
He was captured because the Defias was angry over his decision to screw them out of their payment for rebuilding his city after a war.
*In the Battle for undercity Quest he sees what the forsaken have done to his Countrymen.
He also completely ignores the fact that the forsaken used to be a country allied with his that he didn't lift a finger to save from the plague. An Eredar put the Liche King in place and a demon lord was behind the attack at the Wrathgate.
So why isn't he all up in the Draenei's face for killing his dad, sending the Horde, and making the Liche King?
Oh, cause those weren't the same Draenei? Okay, so what's his beef with Thrall or Garrosh then? They weren't the same leaders that did all that. (Thrall was born on Azeroth and Garrosh never came in for the wars.)
Kharon Mar 12th 2010 10:10PM
@Notos:
But Varian was a full grown man. Thrall was RAISED in the arena. One would think that a good King would be more... open-minded. Or at least comprehensive.
*A half-orc killed his father -- well the other half was Draenei. And they are in your Alliance now.
*Humans fought them back to their planet, followed them, and didn't allow them to reach a new place to call home, intent on commiting genocide.
*Humans enslaved him and RAISED him as a gladiator. And killed Taretha.
*Well, they have to LIVE somewhere, don't they?
You see? You can make anything favor you if written right. Doesn't mean you ARE right.
BTW, I'm no Garrosh fan. But I still think Blizz will make Varian and Garrosh some kind of raid.
