Breakfast topic: Stat and system changes for Basic Campfire

In an effort to keep our loyal readers informed, WoW.com has been doing its best to cover every inch of blue text we find. It came to our attention that we had overlooked one important change when we discussed the effects of stat and system changes in Cataclysm the other week. So, without further ado, this morning I will be explaining how the ability Basic Campfire is affected by the upcoming expansion.
Okay, not really. I'm actually just going to tell you about the ability itself, and how it has changed.
Basic Campfire is an ability that is learned when you first train cooking. With just one rank in cooking you can create a campfire to roast your raw food over, and in the process grant a 4 spirit buff to anyone close by. No materials or regeants are required to create a fire, and you can make one almost anywhere except underwater. (Oddly though, you can create one on top of water if you are buffed with Levitate, Water Walking, or Path of Frost.) The fire will not inflict any damage if you stand in it; though if you have the non-combat pet Plump Turkey, when it is in range of a basic campfire it will be rush toward the open flame, "sensing its destiny," and martyr itself for the sake of your stomach.
Basic Campfire has undergone a few changes over the many years of WoW. After I was informed that the Basic Campfire is one of Garrosh Hellscream's many contenders for the position of the next warchief, I decided to research the ability's roots. Here is a short list of interesting thing I found about Basic Campfire.
- it used to require the tool Flint and Tinder to make. Before Patch 3.0.8, it also required Simple Wood as a regeant.
- Patch 3.0.8 also removed damage dealt to players who got too close to the fire. One comment I found mentioned that players in raids used to start Basic Campfires under afk players as practical jokes.
- Before Patch 3.2.2 Basic Campfire had a cast time of 10 seconds.
- The ability used to be part of a secondary profession, Survival, which was removed before the game went live. The ability involved buffing your party with spirit through the use of campfires and torches. The ability Bright Campfire, was the updated version of Basic Campfire.
So what do you miss about the game that has changed in the past two expansions? What will you miss in Cataclysm?

Basic Campfire for Warchief 2010.

I dunno, that Half Stack of Peacebloom has a very strong following. I really feel it's message could reach more Horde members.
Two Points in Brambles really cornered the Druid vote, too.
Let's not forget Sickly Gazelle, there's a contender who made a firm stance on Public Healthcare Option, do you know how much armor repairs cost post-death plate wearers without insurance?

"Basic Campfire, the only GOOD fire to stand in".

Didn't it also have a cooldown?
Farrell Mar 13th 2010 9:50AM
It still does: 5 minutes

You forgot to mention that you can gain skill points from making Basic Campfires during the early levels of Cooking.

Not only did she forget to mention skill-ups, but I still don't know how the Basic Campfire is affected by the upcoming expansion. Basic Campfire is going to be "Nerf'd to the ground Baby". The question is how? Will it only provide Spirit to Healer cooks and maybe a couple Boomkin and Shaman? Will it be hard to get in the cooking spirit without actual spirit.
Yay! Basic campfire will only buff Heals - Tanks eat your hearts out - We're #1

I voted for it. Did you?

I made sure to vote early and often. :D

warchief camfire ftw!
this article was foretold by salzman.

Please, someone delete EaterofBirds' comment. After that southpark episode, though funny, he is still the cancer that is killing WoW.
Its because of him/people like him, That i get people in my random's that think its cool to act out parts from those episodes and to pull everything and laugh about it later...then, refer EVERYTHING happening to that episode..then ask if the blade of 1000 truths drops here.
Wolfcat Mar 13th 2010 1:52PM
Really? I've never had anyone in a random act out bits of that episode or ask that question. Only time I've heard it referred to was a few times in Trade and once in Guild. You're unlucky I guess.
Angrycelt Mar 13th 2010 2:36PM
I don't know, I saw a guild tag during a PUG called "Leveled to 80 on Boars" or some such - made me laugh since it was fairly subtle.
And yeah, not a day goes by where trade channel doesn't have someone asking about killing that which has no life.
Hollow Leviathan Mar 13th 2010 3:56PM
This is the first time I've seen the episode referenced since I replaced my Slayer of the Lifeless with Rimefang's Claw.
Mitawa Mar 13th 2010 8:21AM
I remember throwing one down while we talked strategy at bosses, if nothing else, the healers could cluster around it and get the buff to marginally increase their mana regen!

Mentioning the changes in creating a Basic Campfire, I just have to point out a moment of supreme stupidity on my part.
I must confess I've never really paid any attention to any of the secondary professions (with the exception of fishing on ONE of my fifteen or so toons). Many moons ago I decided to make a fire and try some n00b cooking, only to find I was lacking the wood, flint and tender. Not really caring about it, I gave up on it rather than worrying about going out and buying some.
Many months later I decided to get serious about cooking. I wasted SO much time checking virtually every vendor listed on WoWHead as selling flint and tender, wondering why in the heck they ALL seemed to be out. Why would they make something so stupid a limited availability item??
After, I kid you not, nearly an HOUR of this crap, I decided to actually check the spellbook for the campfire... only to find it no longer required the items to make that had made me give up on the dang thing in the first place.
I. Felt. So. Stupid.
At least it taught me a thing or two about keeping an eye on my various abilities and any potential changes. ^_^;;
