Just looked at wowhead comments on hands of freedom and protection. Apparently they used to be blessings and would remove whatever blessing was on the target already so the blessing would need to be reapplied once freedom/protection wore off.

The Hand-system came with 3.0. Before that, Hand of Protection, Freedom, etc were all Blessings. Because of this, most paladins (and many other players) who played before then are still prone to calling Hand of Protection BoP (Blessing of Protection), and other similar things.

I still say "BoP" verbally when referring to what is now Hand of Protection.
Most people know what I'm talking about.
