For /roll, loot caps are essential. Roll for main spec, roll for offspec, roll for greed if no one is for main/off... you're allowed 1 item for main, 1 item for off, and unlimited for greed.
I pretty much thought that was standard, guess not. Sounds like the guy who won those tank gears was the offtank, and is doing it just to help the guild. While I understand the "for the guild" philosophy, to be honest, I don't understand why someone does a role they really don't like. I'm like a 100% dps on all my characters, and sometimes I feel like a jerk because I refuse to spec resto on my shaman or my druid. But I'd rather sit out a raid and just kill stuff or do bg's than be forced to heal... anyway that's a sidetrack. For an off-off-tank, looks like your loot master really messed up, he shouldn't have been allowed to roll with the main tank.
