Shifting Perspectives: Karapalooza 2010, part 2

OPERA
The Opera event is likely to be your first big hurdle. While Oz is fairly straightforward -- it's an add fight that you should approach the same way you did Moroes -- Big Bad Wolf and Romulo & Julianne are an almighty pain in the ass. Pray you get Oz.
Trash clear: I usually stealth past the Skeletal Ushers. The "actors" before the stage take about 3-5 minutes to clear, but don't pull too many at once, and make sure you yank them out of the spotlights they'll spawn. They still do a surprising amount of damage.
Kill: This depends entirely on the event you get. Oz can be done in about 3-4 minutes. R&J is usually around 5-7 minutes, but it'll be considerably longer if you make mistakes and let Julianne heal too much. On the sole occasion I've managed a Big Bad Wolf kill, it's a 10-minute fight.
Spec: Bear. Regardless of the event, you will need the survivability.
Gear: Bear. See above.
How hard?:
Romulo and Julianne: This can be tough because control of the fight depends on one of the things we're not that great with -- frequent, reliable interrupts. Julianne will, for obvious reasons, be your stumbling block to success. Romulo has a stacking poison effect that can be a worry, but with luck he'll be missing you too much for it to be a real concern.
Phase 1 is Julianne on her lonesome, and she can be taken from 100% to 0% fairly quickly in cat form (even while you're rocking bear gear). Maim every Eternal Affection without fail. You will be fairly low when she dies as you're not interrupting her other abilities, but you've got just enough time to heal up before Romulo spawns. Add an Abolish Poison to yourself if you can.
Phase 2 is Romulo. Go bear and take him down to 0%. He's a straight tank and spank, and the only ability of any concern is Poisoned Thrust. Romulo should die before this stacks too high; if not, you can survive popping out to slap another Abolish Poison on yourself.
Phase 3 is where things get tough, and the first thing you should do is /focus Julianne. Done that? OK, the secret of this fight is to keep her running. You can't afford to go cat for this, so your two options for interrupts are Bash and Feral Charge. If Bash is on cooldown, you should be kiting both her and Romulo around the stage. Where you kite doesn't particularly matter, because Julianne needs to stop in order to cast anything, which gives you early warning that a spell is on the way. If you're already in motion, you should quickly have the necessary range to Charge her. Again, don't worry about interrupting anything other than Eternal Affection. Interrupting that heal is your first priority, and just DPS both her and Romulo down slowly while you watch for it. Don't forget that they have to die within 10 seconds of each other.
Big Bad Wolf: Alaron at the Fluid Druid described soloing this better than I can. Be prepared for a very long and frustrating night if you get the Wolf. I have to confess that I usually give up after wiping to the damn dog for a fruitless hour and enlist help, but it is soloable.
Oz: Even in good gear, you'll probably have to blow some cooldowns on the early part of the fight with all 5 mobs on you. That said, Oz is by far the easiest among the Opera events to solo, and phase 1 is essentially Moroes + adds all over again. Once all of them are active, Berserk to get 1 or 2 of them down quickly, and after that the fight's a leisurely tank and spank. You can go cat full-time for the Crone when she spawns; just avoid the cyclone that paths (very slowly) around the stage.
Notable drops:
- Earthsoul Leggings: Another early resto piece that was a recolored version of the rogue's Bloodfang set.
- Romulo's Poison Vial: This was a surprisingly good cat piece for a while, but good luck winning it over your raid's other melee or hunters.
- Ruby Slippers: This was a fun little item that could replace your hearthstone if you wanted, but they shared a cooldown. Boo on that.

NIGHTBANE
Nightbane was once the terror of druid tanks everywhere due to his Bellowing Roar. For newer players unfamiliar with the mechanic, boss fears were among the many reasons that bears and paladins couldn't realistically be main tanks. If a boss feared you, they dropped aggro and then wandered off to start one-shotting other raid members for the length of the fear. You could get around this by keeping a Fear Ward rotation on a bear or pally tank, except: a). You needed priests: b). Only dwarf (and then in BC, draenei) priests had it, so: c). You were entirely at the mercy of these players' attention spans, and: d). If you were Horde, you were up the proverbial creek.
Whenever anybody complains about raiding being dumbed down and class abilities homogenized, I laugh and laugh.
Trash clear: Nightbane doesn't really have trash as such -- just a few Trapped Souls and Ghastly Haunts wandering around the entrance to the terrace. All can be stealthed past, or killed as you prefer. Budget about 4-5 minutes if you do clear them all.
Kill: He's still a respectably long fight; plan on spending 8-10 minutes. As an aside, you no longer need the Blackened Urn; you'll find a small urn in the middle of the terrace that can be right-clicked, summoning him.
Spec: Bear or cat.
Gear: Bear or cat.
How hard?: Even in the earliest of Wrath's epics, Nightbane no longer poses much of a threat. The only element of any real annoyance here is going to be Distracting Ash. Because you have plenty of time to pop out and heal during his air phases, you don't even need amazing gear to get him down. If you can survive one ground phase, you've got the fight in the bag.
Every week, Shifting Perspectives treks across Azeroth in pursuit of truth, beauty, and insight concerning the druid class. Sometimes it finds the latter, or something good enough for government work. Whether you're a Bear, Cat, Moonkin, Tree, or stuck in caster form, we've got the skinny on druid changes in patch 3.3, a look at the disappearance of the bear tank, and thoughts on why you should be playing the class (or why not).Filed under: Druid, Analysis / Opinion, Raiding, (Druid) Shifting Perspectives

Yet I still see groups of level 80s who wipe in this place. /cry

Oh, and while you no longer need the Blackened Urn, you do still need to have completed the questline to use the new urn, right? Could someone please clarify on this point for me?
Aubrecia Mar 16th 2010 7:52PM
I'm pretty confident you don't need the quest. A group of me and a few guildies ran this several weeks ago, and the only problem we had was that the urn had bugged out and was nowhere to be seen. Soft resetting the instance fixed it, though, so, you know.
Allison Robert Mar 16th 2010 9:20PM
I'm pretty sure you don't need to have done the questline, but as Aubrecia notes, occasionally the urn bugs out. I've had Kara groups on alts that haven't seen it, but a soft reset made it visible for us as well.

You do need to have completed the quest. I confirmed this soloing every week on my DK.
hairy_fedd Mar 16th 2010 7:17PM
I remember when I got my Fiery reins...my first time in Kara and my first raid. Pissed my guild leader off :) BC was good times.
Anna Mar 16th 2010 8:23PM
Same happened in our guild. We bring a new guy in and do Kara to get him some gear and badges (we've been farming that place for months on 2, sometimes 3 groups per week). We kill Horseman, reins drop, new guy wins. I was *so* pissed off (was officer/RL/loot master) given that the second high on the rolls was an old loyal member and great person that was crazy about mounts. Old member was really cool about it, personally I'd have been smashing the keyboard at that point. We never saw the mount drop again.
Same with Mongoose. An enchanter of ours finally got it off a PuG.

Interesting stuff. Out of curiosity, do you think any of this is soloable for balance druids? I doubt it - we have almost a bear's armor, and a cat's dps and much better healing than either, but a caster's stamina and dodge - but I don't know. I definitely needed to switch to bear gear and spec to solo some level 60 raid content and level 70 heroics (I did this around the time of 3.1 or 3.2, I think), but just because I couldn't do those in moonkin form doesn't mean I couldn't do any old stuff at all. Maybe I'll give it a shot this weekend.
Lissanna Mar 16th 2010 8:03PM
I wouldn't really want to try on a boomkin. Boomkins are better for soloing old 5-mans.
Allison Robert Mar 16th 2010 9:27PM
There are certain raid fights -- my top picks would be Aran (for a reason you'll see in next week's column) and Ayamiss in AQ20 -- where a boomkin is not only a decent but quite possibly superior choice. But for most solo content, yeah, the bear is typically a better way to go. You do decent DPS in the form (a bear managing 2-3K will be doing about the same amount of raid DPS an early Kara raid could have done), but the real benefit is just the survivability and meaty ILotP procs. Plus -- when necessary -- cooldowns. The bear is able to reset a fight to a degree that even the cat doesn't enjoy.
Moeru Mar 16th 2010 7:21PM
I can actually do the same on my prot pally. First time I tried I got wolf :/. Sucked. It's fun but it takes awhile, even with 2-4k DPS
Sargenus Mar 16th 2010 7:24PM
I have about 36k unbuffed in bear form right now. And let me tell you- I can not solo Oz. I've tried and tried. But I always die. It's because of Dorothee. Those Frostbolts get me every single time! How can I easily remedy that situation? >
Lissanna Mar 16th 2010 8:02PM
If you can use frost resist gear (the Polar boots, cord, &/or vest), then you may be able to resist more of the frost bolts. I haven't tried it though.
Robert Mar 16th 2010 8:42PM
I had a really hard time the first time I soloed Oz. (Part of the reason was that I didn't read up on the fight, so when I downed Dorothy's crew the first time I celebrated early and got one-shotted by the crone.)
I eventually got it sorted out by figuring out which adds I could down the fastest. At least one add has to die really, really quick; probably two, or else it's a wipe unless you're in ToC 25 gear.
Allison Robert Mar 16th 2010 9:35PM
Hrm. I have to admit I hadn't thought about Lissanna's idea of using frost resist, but that might be really helpful. And yeah, to echo Robert, you need to get one of the adds down (preferably Dorothee due to both caster damage and the fear) as quickly as possible.
I have about 45K self-buffed in bear right now and can still get pretty low doing the first phase. All I can say is -- Berserk off the pull, Barkskin when everything's active, pop offensively-oriented trinkets if you've got them (something like Vengeance of the Forsaken/Victor's Call works great here), and kill Dorothee as fast as you can. Even with just Dorothee down, the fight gets a lot easier.
Sargenus Mar 17th 2010 12:07AM
I'll try the Frost res suggestion, thanks! I've gotten BBW and R&J and downed them easily(Don't ask me how. Luck I guess). I managed to solo every boss in Kara. But once i get Oz, I need to call in a friend to help DPS them down. I just hate that water bolt. She spams it mercilessly and it makes me hate the Wizard of Oz, which is SUPPOSE to be my favorite movie of all time!
Thanks for the suggestions!

Can we get a guide like this for Death Knights? I have seem the many soloing videos out there, but they don't offer much of an explanation on how it was done. I also say the article on that DK that soloed Al'ar and Magtheridon, but again, other than the Al'ar fight there was not much in the way of explanation on exactly how to do it. Personally, I killed Attumen, Maiden, and Moroes on my Death Knight, and I'll be trying Opera again soon.
ggrooms Mar 17th 2010 2:56PM
For the DK, the same is about true, only use DS as often as necessary and be in blood spec. Curator will be your biggest problem and he can not be diseased (but the orbs can). As a Night Elf I attempt to simply Shadowmeld reset him after passing.

How to solo Kara as a DK
Make the following macro:
/castsequence Icy Touch, Plague Strike, Death Strike, Death Strike, Death Strike
Put one of those drinking birds on it and go make a sandwich.
Basically everything the druid guide says works except you don't have to pop out to heal because you'll always be healed by Death Strike, you don't have to do tricky stuff to interrupt Julianne because you have a reliable interrupt and if it says you need good gear you can replace that with mediocre gear. I solo'd the place successfully in 200 and 213 epics.
Matt Mar 16th 2010 7:37PM
I'm a Rogue and I still carry around the Ruby Slippers instead of a Hearthstone. :) Yay for casters not wanting it.
