The Queue: Little things
Welcome back to The Queue, WoW.com's daily Q&A column where the WoW.com team answers your questions about the World of Warcraft. Alex Ziebart will be your host today.
I feel I've done one of these far too recently to do another one so quickly, but we're going to do another listening music day anyway. In yesterday's Blood Sport, Colby introduced me to Pomplamoose, a musical duo from Youtube. Considering most of my procrastination hours are spent on YouTube, I am amazed I've never heard of them before, but they are great. Plus the girl is way cute. She practically emits that kitty face emote when she talks. Seriously.
So today's listening music is Pomplamoose's Little Things.
Grumbly Stuff asked...
"What's your (or anyone's, really) favorite proc or on-use effect for any piece of gear/weapon/trinket?"
Shard of the Fallen Star is the best item in the game, without a doubt. I don't care that it's effectively useless, you're calling a freaking meteor down from the sky with it and that's awesome.
Before I changed mains, it was also my raid's good luck charm for a few years. I always used it on bosses we were struggling on just when it started to feel right and would drop a meteor on the boss's head to let them know it's business time. This is what my raid leader wrote on our guild site after our first Illidan kill, no lie:
Kar asked...The power is undeniable.
We couldn't figure it out - we had been wiping, little things going wrong that turned into big things going wrong, people panicking, bad luck. All of it combining to thwart our attempts to defeat Illidan time and time again.
Then Alex equipped... THE trinket.
He died that go, and it wasn't even close. I swear to God, this is a true "I win" trinket. When we go into Sunwell, we'll be through it in about 10 minutes, tops.
"Why can death knights use maces? Maces aren't runeblades."
I'm pretty sure it's purely an itemization thing. It would be lame to make a class that primarily uses 2Handers, and then lock them out of a significant portion of those items. Pretty much the same reason they ended up giving rogues axes in this expansion.
Rofle asked...
"What's with your AOL Radio ads?"
None of us actually knew we had radio ads until you guys mentioned it. Who knows? Adam and I are currently on a quest to find it. I'm listening to AOL Radio's Game Scores station hoping to catch it. I didn't even know we had something like that.
You learn something new every day.
SomnambulistArygos asked...
"I have a question that I was musing on that I wanna see The Queue tackle - in the (soon) three expansions we've killed Arthas, Illidan, and (soon) Deathwing. Any predictions what might come for expansion four? I've seen Emerald Dream bandied about, but really, is there anything else besides that, or are they gonna run out of canon?"
They can pretty much do anything they want, including come up with brand new lore. Who knows, expansion four might be completely new villains that have been coughed up by the Cataclysm. But as far as the existing stable goes, there's still Azshara, more Old Gods, I don't think we'll be killing off all of the Elemental Lords in Cataclysm (though we might be), and the Burning Legion is most certainly not gone. Kil'jaeden is still perfectly alive, not to mention Sargeras.
The Emerald Dream seems... more and more unlikely to happen. Like, ever.

Personally I think the author of Stormrage single handedly killed the Emerald Dream.
I mean, who wants to go there now?
kabshiel Mar 16th 2010 2:33PM
I think there's still a section of the Dream held by the Nightmare, so it might make a good raid someday.
Bernie Roscoe Mar 16th 2010 2:39PM
More importantly, I hate the author.
Hangk Mar 16th 2010 2:54PM
The books aren't canon. No, I don't care what Blizzard says. If they want something to be "canon", implement it in-game. I don't care about their craptacular fantasy novel mill that rides their successful franchise to boatloads of cash by churning out vaguely WoW-related drek that wouldn't pass muster on a fan fiction website.

Is the Stormrage book really that bad? I was looking forward to picking it up when I can afford more luxuries then WoW itself. Malfurion is my favorite lore character...

I doubt I'll ever read Stormrage, but what I'm hearing is:
Rest of the WoW Books > Stormrage > rest of Knaak.
SgtBinary Mar 16th 2010 3:37PM
Stormrage was actually quite good. I do not understand it when people starting hating on Knaak, he is a good writer. WoA and Stormrage certainly help not only flesh out storyline that the game can not fully present, but show us the characters true personality and flaws.
Viator Mar 16th 2010 3:51PM
not really their flaws, more like their godlike abilities.
*spoiler*
Knaak did left a nice raidinstance/zone in the emerald dream for us to tackle /cheer
Snark Mar 16th 2010 4:31PM
That really, really sucks. Emerald Dream was one of the things I was looking forward to the most.
Sayomara Mar 16th 2010 4:37PM
@Cedrich Stormrage isn't that bad, but its not that good either. If your ok with spoilers I would point you to wow.com review http://www.wow.com/2010/02/23/wow-com-reviews-richard-a-knaaks-stormrage/
Also GreySeer at http://www.lorecrafted.com/ has some great reviews as well.
If your an Alliance or Night Elf person I will bet you will like it more than you don't.
Hope that helps
vazhkatsi Mar 16th 2010 9:25PM
and thank god for that. i have never been looking forward to the emerald dream. i mean its just not that interesting.
Ruckus Mar 16th 2010 10:40PM
@vazhkatsi
What are you talking about? The Emerald Dream is a surreal mirror of all that exists in Azeroth, it's the most interesting place in Warcraft lore! Not only does it tie to the Night Elves, Dragon Flights, Titans, and Burning Legion-- from what little we know about it the only thing certain is that there's unknown terrain to explore there than all of Outland. Don't sound too boring to me.

Question:
I've always wondered why there doesn't seem to be any equivalent to GearScore around PvP. I've used imba.be and many other sites and addons and they only care about Raid stats. A huge part of the game for me is PvP and, yes, I know resilience is a "wasted stat" in most dungeon roles but there must be SOME people that still play this game for PvP and want to know how their (or their team's) gear stacks up for PvP.
Am I missing somewhere that satisfies that curiosity for me, or do you know if this might change when the more team-PvP-centric Cataclysm comes along?
Bernie Roscoe Mar 16th 2010 2:12PM
Skill and class are more important than PvP stats. Much more.
Resilience rating can be checked fairly easily anyways.
(cutaia) Mar 16th 2010 2:29PM
With PvE, the dungeons don't change each time you go into it. So gearscore becomes a quick way of determining if your gear is appropriate for that particular content (optimally that's the intent, at least...let's please not start a "gearscore≠skill" argument here).
With PvP, you don't really need a quick way of determining gear. In a battleground, your best bet is having a team with a strategy and you probably don't have much choice in who you're grouped with. In arena...well, why wouldn't you have the time to just look at your prospective team member's armory to see what their gear looks like?
Besides...explaining your PvP gear is usually pretty easy anyway. "I'm full Furious/Relentless with X amount of resil."
Tooay Mar 16th 2010 2:33PM
GearScore is just as useful in PvP as it is in PvE. In both cases, it tells you if you have a high item level.
wow Mar 16th 2010 2:49PM
Well, think of being in a BG and instead of PvE GearScore showing up in the mouseover for your teammate, it shows PvP GearScore. I could mouseover the people around me and see "Whoa, this pally has a PvP GS of 5500+, I should stick with him!" or "This guy has a PvP GS of 3200, he's my cannon fodder"
Hangk Mar 16th 2010 3:04PM
Just look at the health bar, and the mana bar if they have one. That will give you a decent indication of where they are PvP-gearwise. I always shudder when everyone buffs up for AV and I'm still the only one in the group with more than 25k health...
Markus Laumann Mar 16th 2010 3:13PM
Maybe what you'd like is an addon that shows you their resil next to their GS. This way you can find the guy with zero PvP gear.
Balmazer Mar 16th 2010 6:01PM
You might be able to set up Pawn for PVP, although I'm not positive.
