I had a real life chum give me grief after rolling on and winning Mag'hari Chieftan's Staff during a PuG'd ICC-10 run. I had beat a healer for it and his argument was that DPS casters get to roll on +hit gear and regular caster gear, while healers only get to roll on regular caster gear, so I should have given the healer priority on the item (even though it's perfectly itemized for Shadow Priests).I asked about healers getting priority on mp5 gear and his response was that it was completely useless and that he never runs out of mana. I understand that mana is pretty much a non-issue these days, but are healers actively avoiding rolling on mp5 gear? Is it really that useless a stat these days?

While healers don't avoid MP5 like DPS do, they will pretty much always go for other stats. It's a little like hit rating once you're 5% above hit cap anyway - all it does is drain your gear's item budget.

I think I'm using that staff on my balance druid, for both dps and healing. I have all the hit rating I need from other gear - at ilvl 245, for a balance druid, druid, it only takes like three pieces of gear to get to the cap - and it has more spell power and haste than my ToC items, so it was definitely a strict upgrade.
