I raid as Disc, and I can tell you that I've never had any problems healing 5-mans as Disc and preferred it even when I was dual spec Disc/Holy. Especially when starting out with a fresh 80 you'll have a deeper mana pool as Disc, and more efficient flash heals which will be your bread and butter heal for a while. Tactics are keep shields up on any non-Pally tank. For Paladins, no shields, but keep bouncing Prayer of Mending off of them on cooldown and keep Renew active. You should do the same with other tanks, but shields interfere with Pally mana regen, and makes them cranky. Oh, and Penance is the most beautiful, oh sh*t tank-healing spell in the game. Use it in panic moments and during predictable spike damage.
Spot heal with flash heal and in the rare occasion where you have groupwide aoe damage to deal with, drop shields on everybody and then use the borrowed time haste buff to cast a prayer of healing. See elitist jerks for specs, glyphs etc. Enjoy the fast queue times!
