Totem Talk: Restoration gearing for the new 80

Want to be a sultan of swing healing? A champion of Chain Heal? Totem Talk: Restoration will show you how. Brought to you by Joe Perez, otherwise known as Lodur from World of Matticus and the For The Lore podcast.
So you've hit that end goal of reaching level 80 and now you need to figure out what to do next right? We have already covered the basics of spells and totems, talents and glyphs, discussed specs and even talked about your journey to level 80. So now that you're at the level cap it is time to get geared up. Whether you stack resilience for PvP or get a set together to raid, you are going to need some gear to do it.
Before we start it should be noted this is not a best in slot list. There are many of those floating around everywhere and that will largely be influenced by your play style. We will talk about choosing a play style and specializing next week. Instead this is a rough idea of where to start gathering gear pre-raid to help you on your next steps.

We talked a little bit about stat priority in my first post but didn't really go into why. To recap I placed the priority as follows, spell power, haste/crit then MP/5. The reasoning behind this is that it makes choosing upgrades very easy for a beginning player, and it allows for simple diversity in healing early on. Your stat priority will change if you choose to raid and depending on what role you pick, but that is a topic we will dive further into next week.
Shaman are the only caster class that uses mail as their highest available armor class. Lucky for us mail caster itemization in the game seems to favor the restoration talent tree, unlike our elemental brethren, and allows us many choices in upgrades along the way. So in a sea of choices where do you begin?
I won't spend too much time going over armor choices, but the best place to start is getting your tier 9 set pieces. While there are many pieces of gear you can have crafted or that can be obtained through heroics, the simple fact remains the ease with which you can receive the tier 9 restoration set is hard to match and it offers with it a great stat allocation as well as some very good 2 piece and 4 piece set bonuses. So that takes care of 5 slots worth of gear, now how about the rest?
With all the heroics you've been running by now, you should have a steady flow of emblems to spend. We will keep this in mind as we look at the gear available to you.
Weapons and shields
In the end game you are likely to be using a dagger or mace and shield. While you can certainly pick up a staff if you desperately need a level 80 weapon, most of them will be contain spirit or hit and will be ill suited for restoration long term.
Maces
- Titansteel Guardian (200) - While this item doesn't tote MP/5 it does have a pretty good selection of other stats we look for, particularly spell power and crit. This is a crafted item and with the current economy is very cheap on most servers to have made or to pick up at the auction house.
- War Mace of Unrequited Love (200) - Dropped by Keristrasza in heroic Nexus, this is clearly a resto weapon. If you obtain this weapon it will last you a decent amount of time.
- Mariel's Sorrow (219) - Obtained from Eadric's Cache in heroic Trial of the Champion, this is another solid restoration main hand. It hits key restoration stats and if you can get your hands on it will see you well into any beginning raid content.
- Bone Golem Scapula (219) - Awarded through the Captain's Chest after completing the Halls of Reflection, this mace is another good candidate for beginning restoration shaman. The best part about this is it drops from the normal mode, so you can easily farm the dungeon for the drop.
Daggers
- Spectral Kris (219) - Normally I would tell you to avoid using a DPS caster weapon, but if you are in need of a level 80 weapon, this is a decent choice. Lacking MP/5 it does have crit and haste. You can obtain this off the Black Knight in heroic Trial of the Champion
- Chilled Heart of the Glacier (219) - Another mainly DPS weapon due to the item having hit, in a pinch you can pick this up from normal Halls of Reflection if you desperately need a main hand.
- Surgeon's Needle (232) - Dropped from Forgemaster Garfrost in heroic Pit of Saron, this is a nice resto main hand that has comparable stats to many of the maces you can obtain.
- Unspeakable Secret (219) - If you still are hurting for a weapon you can always grab this staff from Forgemaster Garfrost in normal mode Pit of Saron. While I do not advocate the use of staves in endgame, it can help tide you over until you can get suitable upgrades.
Restoration has more choices than our DPS counterparts here but the best ones will come out of a raid environment.
- Protector of Frigid Souls (219) - Drops from Scourgelord Tyrannus in normal mode Pit of Saron. It has all the key restoration stats and is a solid off hand.
- Protective Barrier of the Light (200) - Purchasable with badges of heroism, you are better off farming for the above shield.
- Zom's Crackling Bulwark (200) - This is a world drop BoE epic. If you're hard pressed for an off hand you can normally pick one up off of the auction house for relatively cheap. It should tide you over until you can get a suitable upgrade.
- Shriveled Heart (232) - It may not be a shield, but this item does have some key resto stats. This can be obtained from the Captain's Cache in heroic Halls of Reflection.
- Girdle of the Dauntless Conquerer (219) - from the Black Knight in heroic Trial of the Champion.
- Blue Belt of Chaos (226) - This crafted item is a pretty good piece to pick up. It hits key restoration stats and in most markets is still reasonably prices on the auction house. If you can find a leather worker to make the item for you, it is even cheaper to obtain.
- Windchill Binding (226) - This belt can be picked up for 28 emblems of conquest and while it lacks sockets, the stats will tide you over until you can get a more ideal piece.
- Waistband of Despair (264) - If you have the emblems of frost to burn, this is pretty good belt to pick up
- Limb Regeneration Bracers (200) - Drops from heroic Drak'tharon Keep
- Pigmented Clan Bindings (213) - 60 emblems of valor will net you these.
- Black Chitin Bracers (245) - This is another crafted item that is easy enough to pick up now.
- Deathchill Cloak (200) - Crafted by tailors, this is a cheap and easy piece to have made or pick up from the auction house. This can be very useful for a budding restoration shaman.
- Cloak of Kea Feathers (213) - 25 emblems of valor this cloak gives you haste and MP/5
- Cloak of the Fallen Cardinal (219) - From normal mode Pit of Saron, you can easily farm for this drop
- Drape of the Violet Tower (264) - If you have the frost badges to burn, you can buy this for 60 emblems of frost.
- Totem of Surging Sea (264) - For 30 frost emblems, if you can spare them this is well worth picking up. You will be using Riptide a lot so you will almost always benefit from the full effect of this totem. You wont be replacing it anytime soon.
- Totem of Calming Tides (245) - Purchasable for 25 emblems of triumph, if you do not want to spend the frost badges this is your next best bet.
Trinkets
There are not a terribly large amount of pre-raid trinkets suitable for restoration shaman, but here are some to keep an eye out for.
- Tear of the Vanquished (200) - While not ideal it does help with mana regeneration and gives you a decent dose of int. This drops from normal mode Trial of the Champion.
- Forge Ember (200) - Drops from heroic Halls of stone.
- Nevermelting Ice Crystal (232) - Even though it is mainly a DPS trinket, this can still be useful for a restoration shaman
- Ephemeral Snowflake (232) - Drops from heroic Halls of Reflection, this is a very good trinket if you can get your hands on it. Normally I would say to avoid on use trinkets but the passive bonus combined with the amount of haste make it very attractive to a restoration shaman
- Talisman of Resurgence (245) - This can be purchased with emblems of triumph and while it is not the best trinket, it can hold the slot until another makes itself available.
- Purified Lunar Dust (264) - If you feel like burning badges of frost this is a handy trinket to pick up for 60 emblems of frost.
There are various rings available through various non raid means. Whether it is from badge vendors or heroics there are too many to list. Try and avoid one with hit and spirit. Here is a short list of the ones available to you pre-raid.
While the same holds true for necklaces, there are a few to keep your eyes peeled for.
- Symbol of Redemption (219) - A spoil of war from the Black Knight in heroic Trial of the Champion, this is a very solid neck piece for any restoration minded shaman.
- Frozen Tear of Elune (226) - A badge item available for 19 emblems of conquest, this neck has the key restoration stats and will keep you
- Arcane Loops of Anger (232) - From heroic Forge of Souls, this neck piece is a good pickup with a good amount of haste and crit.
- Love's Prisoner (232) - Also from heroic Forge of Souls, this little beauty gives you both MP/5 and haste. Well worth a pickup if you see it drop.

FIRST ONCE AGAIN! Should I level a shaman?
Noah Mar 16th 2010 8:01PM
No, you should not. That would be a disgrace to the shaman class.
jjtwalton Mar 17th 2010 3:50AM
Hahaha. :D

5-Piece Tier 9 is a large waste of triumph emblems.
4-Piece Set Bonus isn't worth giving up the 245 Helm/Shoulders.
I'd recommend only buying hands and pants of Tier 9, as 232 Tier 9 gear have horrible stats.
Saving up for the 245 loot, and crusader orbs for crafted 245 chest/bracers will probably quicken the rate at which you obtain decent gear, as opposed to buying 5-Pieces of Tier 9.
Cyno01 Mar 16th 2010 6:47PM
Yeah, I was gonna say something to this effect. Tier gear is a bit overrated, you're generally better off buying the non tier ilvl245 pieces than the 232 tier shoulders and helm. Plus why spend badges on legs and hands when you can get those with a bit of luck in VoA.
This goes for everyone pretty much though, not just shammys. I have 2 very geared alts, a resto shammy and dk tank. I've followed this philosophy with both to great success. 245 badge shoulders and helm, crafted 245 chest ( crusader orbs are cheap now) and tier pants and hands from VoA. Although I think I bought hands on ane an legs on the other because of bad luck in voa and nothing else to spend badges on.

Spark of Life is better for resto shaman than most trinkets you listed there and it's very accessible coming from heroic halls of stone. It's OP for a blue trinket.
Rob Mar 16th 2010 6:22PM
I think it's really wonderful that it's so easy to get the tier 9 armor set. How do you do that?
Ozzard Mar 17th 2010 3:49AM
Rob - I was about to make a broadly similar comment. The gear selection here feels "102" rather than "101" to me. Before you, dear reader, reach for the "vote down" button, can I say why and ask for help?
I have a fairly new 80 shammy sat around, dual-specced ele and resto. I'm used to healing (my main's a bear/tree dual spec) but I'm not comfortable healing in PUGs with the shammy's current gear level. Before 3.3 came along, I'd have been fine with these. Now I get dumped into groups who expect to roflstomp the instance, can't keep up with the tank pulling the first 3 groups of trash at once*, tank dies, group wipes, finger of blame gets pointed, healer gets vote-kicked. Bit demoralising really.
Does anyone have suggestions on good places to look for a "how to start gearing your resto shammy so that you can run heroics so that you can get enough emblems to start getting the T9 gear" guide?
* This is why I don't pull multiple groups on my bear unless I know the healer can keep up :-)
Matt Mar 17th 2010 7:31AM
If your gear won't support you healing Heroics, you have to start running Heroics as DPS. Your DPS might suck, too, since your DPS gear isn't likely to be all that good either but honestly, a Heroic instance isn't going to fail because of your low DPS. Just try to let the criticism and linking of DPS meters roll off your back, keep queuing for Heroics as DPS, and pretty soon you'll have the emblems you need for your Resto set. Plus there are trinkets like the Forge Ember that you will likely see drop, and you can pick these up and use them until you can get better.
PodPeople Mar 17th 2010 12:13PM
Ozzard,
Matt's suggestion is one way, however the wait time for dps v heals in LFD is pretty significant. there is also people getting bent if you roll need on healing items as dps, esp if the healer also wants it.
it's probably better to say at zoning in "Hi, I'm still gearing up. please don't pull half the dungeon at once, we will wipe." this way if the tank is that much of an ass to pull 4-5 packs right off and a wipe happens, people are more likely to be pissed at the tank for doing that. also, if the tank and dps are geared enough to roflstomp the place, it will probably be easier to heal it than if you were all lower geared.
Res Mar 23rd 2010 7:56AM
First suggestions are good, but bou can also spam the non-heroic versions of ICC 5 mans and save up badges that way. Yeah you don't get the bonus at the end but at least you're getting somewhere, and you'll get some nice upgrade drops along the way.

I recently got my Shaman to 80 and decided to go Resto as main spec. I was lucky enough to have other characters that could fund the 2 craftable 245 pieces and another few level 200 off set pieces. This with quest gear meant i could run heroics and the new normals. Flame leviathan was the weekly for WEEKS on my server so Frost emblems were so easy to get. I replaced a level 187 quest blue with a 264. Gear came so fast and i am now sitting with a 5k gearscore after completing one full raid to ToTC 25. I wasn't boosted through it and only got one piece of gear from it.
The gear progression was really clear and obvious to me, i'm loving how easy it was but also a little annoyed at how much time it took to gear up other characters back in Naxx :S
Getting gear was far easier than leveling and to the above post YES! i am so glad i got mine to 80 :)
Paugu Mar 16th 2010 6:38PM
The cape is 50 emblems, my good man. A typo, but can be fixed. :)
Love's Prisoner is a definite MUST for Resto shammies unless you're good on MP5. Then the other one from Heroic Forge of Souls is the choice for haste/crit stacking.
Kakume Mar 16th 2010 6:41PM
I know, I know, it's pvp gear, but, for an awesome and easy to get cloak, might I suggest the Wrathful Gladiator's Cloak of Subjugation? http://www.wowhead.com/?item=51332
Even putting the resilience aside, it's a huge upgrade over the Deathchill Cloak and a marked upgrade over most of the other cloaks. And it's available for nothing more than honour. 52,200, which is a fair amount, but Wintergrasp quests will get you a quarter of that every week.
Vogie Mar 16th 2010 10:21PM
I wish I knew this before I used my frosts for that drape of the violet tower...
Zuckerdachs Mar 17th 2010 2:42AM
Don't complain about the emblems you spent for the Drape, mate, it's fantastic. It's the first thing I spent my emblems on and my shaman is far from new.
Mark Mar 16th 2010 6:41PM
Missed it by about 4 days. Hit 80 on the 12th and started gearing up.
Some of the things I picked up are a bit different than what's listed, but hopefully not too awful. I ended up buying some crafted gear then looked up the EJ gearing up list, according to them I made some mistakes, but it all looks close to what's listed here.
Since I'm gearing up the shaman for ICC (which I have a deadline of this weekend to accomplish) I'm sure the min/max philosophy at EJ is probably closer to what I should be going for, but some of the choices don't make much sense to me. They said the resto chest and gloves, and to get the elemental helm and shoulders (!?!?) I guess the stat differences make some sense, more crit and haste, plus the 4-pc bonus is kinda lame on the resto set.
Anyone else have any other insights on this?
(btw, the deadline is self-imposed. My guild has setup a second 10-man team to start ICC and we needed another raid-healer, had the shaman sitting there at 70 for a while and decided to go ahead and get 'er done.)
cidninja Mar 16th 2010 7:11PM
the reasons for getting the ele pieces are exactly what you guessed. better stats, and resto 4pc isn't very good.
Vogie Mar 16th 2010 10:31PM
Not to mention, it's a whole lot easier to launch off the occasional FS+LvB with the extra 9 seconds of Flame shock
Spikeles Mar 16th 2010 6:43PM
When Brewfest comes around, be sure to try for the Ancient Pickled Egg http://www.wowhead.com/?item=49078 it still compares well to the iLevel 251+ trinkets because of the +haste.
