Well, 3.3.3 is bringing Frostfire Bolt for the PVE frost spec back into the action, if you didn't know.
The talent "Brain Freeze" will now also allow you to insta-cast Frostfire bolt, which IS going to be a DPS boost compared to not taking it since Fireball didn't scale well with just chucking frostbolts.
Obviously everyone will still get TtW, but Frostfire bolt will be used.

Here's the patch note:
"Brain Freeze: This talent now allows your next Fireball or Frostfire Bolt to be instant and cost no mana. There is a small internal cooldown to keep the Frostfire Bolt from immediately triggering Brain Freeze again."

But in the wrong sense. People made entire specs and rotations around that one spell. Having it as a proc is going to help Frost mages (And is gonna be fun in PvP for sure), but it's not resurrecting back as a viable or nuke. A proc is not the same as a talent build and main nuke.

@Babaloo and it might be the reason it was dropped behind.
Do you know of any other spec that SOLELY focus on one ability? The closest spec to using a single spell is Frost Mage, and they have Deep Freeze every 30 seconds to break the monotony. Fireball on Brain Freeze, as I mentioned previously, is a bad choice because it does less damage to the point the GCD caused by the insta-cast means a loss in DPS.
I am all for Frostfire bolt used in a rotation, and it will be great for PVE Frost (I've been a raiding frost mage for ages, it's just that it gets boring using the same 2 skills all the time), and I remember when I leveled using Brain Freeze, it was fun to have to look out for a proc and it was very satisfying to see 2 missiles hit the target at the same time.
But I am personally against making a spec PURELY for that one skill. Frostfire bolt should be included in the Fire or Frost rotation, and buffed by a specific mechanic different for each class. Fire already has pyroblast on a proc, so how would you add a skill into an already busy rotation?
Let me give an example that would make Fire shine a bit more in PVP and would be awesome for PVE. Living bomb keeps the same damage and all, but when it explodes (by a dispel or by running it's full duration), 'causes the next Frostfire bolt to be instant AND a critical hit.
Advantage of this: This one crit would only help the RNG of having 2 consecutive crits for a fire mage, insta would be sweet, and for a fire mage with long casting times, this could be interesting. In PVP, if the enemy dispels living bomb, this would act as a double nuke (living bomb explosion + frostfire bolt that hits their face).
Obviously this is a rough idea that could be polished.

Actually, with 2 piece T10, using the Brain Freeze proc is a nice DPS increase due to the haste buff you get from using it.

Frostfire specs don't focus solely on one ability any more than traditional fire specs do. The only rotational difference between a frostfire and "pure" fire spec is the substitution of Frostfire bolt for Fireball.

Busy rotation?????
What mage do you play? Cos ive played mage for a LONG time and we do not - and never have had - a busy rotation. Deep fire is my preferred spec - but as i have posted before
Arc - AB spam with AM occasionally (on proc) - very very rare use of barrage (ie when moving)
Frost - FB spam, with occasional DF, IL combo, (after 3.3.3 - FFB on BF procs)
Fire Fireball spam, with occasional Pyro and scortch (if you dont have a specced lock in the party), and LB
FFB - same as fire - replace
I cannot say any of these specs are 'busy' rotations.
As to your assertion that Frost is the nearest spec that focuses on one spell - i once again disagree - Surely ARCANE with its massive focus on ONE spell - Arcane Blast - is far more spammier than frost or fire specs. I even know arc mages who (in heroics ofc) just spam that ONE spell the whole run - and still top dps meters
As to your idea for buffing LB - im sorry but i cannot see how that COULDNT be OP - put LB on someone - no matter what you are now guarrenteed a LB explosion, followed by an instant FFB crit (plus slow) followed by a pyroblast. Based on my PVE fire - that would come to something like 30k+ damage in about 1 to 1.5 seconds.
I will confidently state that will never happen. But as im fire - please please please prove me wrong blizz!
